New P3D computer build with KabyLake i7 7700k cpu...
« on: February 11, 2017, 07:07:07 PM »
I decided to upgrade my Sim P3D computer to a Windows 10 system using the newly introduced Kabylake i7 7700k CPU.  My goal was to get smoother performance with my windowed display system using three Optoma GT1080 HD projectors, which is quite a processing burden for a single computer system.

For the new i7 7700k cpu, I chose the MSI Z270 motherboard chip set, with 3770 RAM.   For the operating system and storage setup, I am using a Samsung 960 EVO M.2 1TB SSD, which ties directly into the buss, with read/write speeds between 2,000 and 3,000 mbps.  These storage devices are amazingly fast.

The INTEL Kabylake can withstand CPU temps up to 100 degrees C.   I am overclocking the i7 7700k cpu to 4.8 GHz, seeing operating cpu temps around 75C.   This CPU will overclock to 5.2 GHz, but the temps get in the high 80 degree C range.  As a side note, I am using water cooling for both the i7 7700k and the GTX980ti.

I am using my current Nvidia GTX980ti for the graphics card.   When it is available sometime this summer, I will change over to the new Nvidia GTX1080ti.

Thus far in my testing with this new computer system with P3D and Sim-Avionics, I see significant improvements in performance over the previous computer, which was a Win7 i7 4770k based with a standard SSD.   My conclusion is that this was a good investment considering the significant performance improvements.   Also, Win 10 seems to do a much better job with blending the three projected displays.  The best part is being able to use a single computer for P3D in a multi-window display setup.   I'm a happy camper  :)
