Update to Optoma Projectors sale
« on: May 04, 2010, 09:43:33 AM »
Since there was no interest here except for one projector, I will be listing the 3 projectors on e-bay with a starting bid of $1400.00 or maybe $1300.00  for all three & no reserve. That is a terrific price if you are not looking for short throw projectors. In case anyone may still be interested, here is the link to my post at FDS

Hey Mau, if I wasn't trying to change to LCD's myself I would have to say I would try to pick these up from you..  Good luck, I am sure someone is getting a great deal.

"Everytime I try to get out, they pull me back in"    Every time I have figured out what I want to do with the visuals, someone comes up with a better idea. And now Nat has an even better setup but only if you are independently wealthy
http://www.flightdecksolutions.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4209 . Maybe I shouldn't be telling you that since you've 'decided' to go with LCDs instead  ;D

So, very tempted to give up selling these projectors and going back to the original plan with 120 degrees field of view. Damn Loto 649, you'd think picking the right 6 numbers out of 49 would not be that difficult  ::)    :)

OMG Mau.. that does look amazing. Well for me the biggest issue is the "Space limitation"  In order to get the full immersion (Where I don;t see anything but the projection, I will need to get a bigger room, or short throw projectors..)  I need to go the LCD route..  I just hate the fact I will need to spend more money though LOL

Trevor, what is your room dimension?

I was thinking LCDs but then after seeing Ivar's results I decided to rethink my space entirely and am repurposing part of my basement (half my shop) for the sim.   This space is 16ft long by 12 wide so I think i can squeeze a 7ft radius screen in now.  My problem now is ceiling height (7.5 ft) which ends up limiting my vertical and thus horizontal size of each screen.  Still leaning on projectors now though if I can work out the calculations.

Seems like LCDs and the projectors cost the same either way (if using at least 40" lcds).    Anyway...good topic....

Maurice....if I had the space I would definitely jump all over your projectors but alas....I need the short throws also...

Very interesting topic this and that setup of Nat's is bloody awesome.

Hey Trev what size LCDs are you considering? and how do you intend to mount them? I always thought that projectors were the way to go; but I see conflicting views here... pardon the pun

Cheers

Joe.

I'm pretty sure that with short throw projectors the room height should not be a problem since the projectors would be mounted just ahead of the front windshield and in the center just like the way Ivar did it and there would be no shadow from the shell with that arrangement. At least I hope I'm right since I only have just under 8 ft myself and that's why I'm looking at short throw beamers.

Well so far the BenQ 782ST that Ivar is using seems to be my best bet as well as it will allow for the widest picture given that height constraint for my room and the projector calculators and my drawings are coming out good with it.   That said, I cannot find this projector in the US an when I called BenQ US they said that the 782 ST is a UK model not sold in the US.   I have found a couple places in Canada that seem to have it and still researching.   I have not been able to find a projector with similiar specs from any other manufacturer.

The hunt is on....

Regards,
Scott

This may turn out to be a very interesting topic.  My sim room is about 9 feet wide and about 18 feet long but the sim cuts that down to about 12 feet of projection distance. give or take a foot.  But like most of you I only have an 8 foot ceiling, and the sim blocks some of the projected image if I have the projectors too far back.  Needless to say, in order to get the sizes of images I want, the projectors just can't get out of the way of everything that it would need to in order to get the images I am looking for. Unless I go with short throw projectors, and even if I do that.. I am going to have to spend the money as Joe said..  it will cost about the same.  and then you would still be able to peek around the window and see the outside edge of the image.  My goal is to eliminate that.

There is another problem I noticed with the projectors and that is "Night Flying" I am running some pretty good projectors right now, but I have trouble distinguishing between horizon and sky when night flying.  Makes things look like I am in CAT III conditions all the time and I am not fussed on that.

When I mount the 3 LCD's I will be essentially creating a sealed black box on the outside of the aircraft  that the 3 LCD'S will sit in.  One main forward view and a front left, and front right view. the idea for me will be to have the box sealed from all light sources and painted FLAT FLAT black to absorb any light coming from the LCD's Themselves.

Similar to what Angus has done with his sim, and you don;t even see the monitor bezels after you spend 5 minutes flying his setup.  I will not need to worry if you will see them on mine.

I was thinking of going with 3 - 32" at least and depending on the price maybe 42", but I think that would be overkill.

anyway, just my thoughts.

Maybe you should stop being a "Peeking Tom"  ;). Using LCD screens instead will prevent you from peeking anyway, so why does peeking and seeing the room  around the sim bother you? Just don't peek and if you don't, short throw projectors would offer more immersion effect I would think since you would have more viewing angle through the side windows than you would with 3 LCD screens unless you used 60" screens or larger.

Anyway, my projectors are not selling so I listed them on e-bay but I don't hold much hope they will sell there either, so I may re-visit all the options and then slash my wrists out of frustration  ;D

One way to "go around" the throw distance problem  is using mirrors.
Has anyone tried that recently?

I tried today with one mirror and it did not seem to make any difference. Maybe you need multiple mirrors?

If the mirrors are on the shell top and the projectors on the side , it should logically project a bigger image and avoid the shadow..??

Sounds logical, but I think you would need a very large mirror in that case and it would be quite hard to align everything with 3 projectors. But worth investigating if the other options do not work out.

Trev,

Are you going to use monitors or LCD TVs? because a 32" Monitor is about £100 more than a 32" HD TV here in the UK.
I notice that Ebuyer are selling an AOC 32" at the moment for £260.00 delivered. Whereas the cheapest comparable monitor is £430.00.

Has anyone tried TVs, is there a difference in display quality?

Cheers
Joe.

Jack that 50" Tv at Walmart is a 720p Plasma if I am not mistaken.  And with that resolution, I think it would work.  My only concern would be Screen burn in the plasma.

Joe, I was definitly looking at Tv's.  I have a 52" Sony Bravia in my living room LCD.  That I attach my laptop to all the time and it looks great.

Burn is not an isuue Trevor.. The 42's I had in my sim where Plasma I never burned them and I would think the newer ones would be better.

Hi Trev,

Yes we've got a Sharp Aquos 46" but I think I'd have to fight the wife for it.  ;)

Actually that could be interesting......  :)
