Windows 7/10 updates
« on: January 16, 2018, 11:32:33 AM »
Updates are obviously a pain...
Our PC being used for sim purposes only what are the steps to be taken to totally inhibit updates in W7 and W10.
( I mean precise steps, being fairly illiterate on that matter   >:()

Pretty sure many would be interested..

I do not know the answer to this. You'll have to google.

This is why I advise that unless you need Win10 for hardware reasons....stick with 7.

I recently experienced this issue.

In WIN10, you will need to google "Set Network Card to 'metered'.

Windows 10 auto-forces downloads and updates with no real way to stop it from happening unless you set the Ethernet network card to "Metered".

Windows 10 won't auto-update your system if you are using a wireless NIC.

You'll have to dive into the registry to set the Ethernet connection to metered.

Here's perhaps a good tutorial....

Hi Jack,

Main thing is to turn off Windows Update service. See here:

Jack,
I dont think anything can be guaranteed with Microsoft. Still need to check periodically.

Jack

Hi Jack,

Yes, I did that on my Win 10 computers and so far it holds, but yes, like people say, -  nothing is guaranteed with Microsoft Win 10  - they may have other ways to enable the service if they want.

In my sim I only have Windows 10 on instructor station and Capt/FO tablets, the rest is Windows 7.

I've turned auto updates off on all my W10 PC's . but a message came up that I cannot disable Security Updates which continue to come. I don't know how to disable the Security Update part and they are probably as bad or worse than the regular updates?

I've had experience with security updates re-enabling firewall configs and resetting allowed programs/network traffic.

The more Microsoft tries to 'Play nice' the more I want to kick them off the playground.

Hi guys, long time away. I also recently went through the pain of "upgrades" to P3d4.1, ProSim-2.0 and one new machine with an AMD Ryzen Processor that absolutely refuses to install Win7, AMD states that the processor does not support Win7 or lower. The tool?, it will not recognize your USB ports for mouse and keyboard operation and the installation stalls. If you find a motherboard that accepts the processor with PS2 ports, then it may  work. But anyway, the subject is Win10 and updates etc. My solution has been very simple. I set up two networks, one running the machines with Win10, isolated from the internet and one machine running Win7 connected to the INET. This machines has two ethernet cards, one that talks to the router, in my case 192.168.0.1 and has a 192.168.0.--- address, and a second card configured with  192.168."2".--- that talks to the subnet. These computers had their Automatic Updates turned off and  IP addresses changed immediately after installation as well.  They do not have direct access to the Internet. Their subnet masks are 255.255.255.0 but no default gateway is given. Of course DNS servers are not necessary.

My 2 c.
