Here is a brief explanation of "my Way" to do it.
Looks much more complicated than it is.
The GF166 board is very easy to figure out and needs no soldering.
You need:
One GF166 remote board
One GF 6 digits display
2 alps encoders (or the GF ones, same)
The rest of the Hardware is either present on the donnor Trx or to be added on any manufacturer's panel.

TOP SIDE
A:
Wiring the off position of the rotary so that it lights up the Fail led
B:
Wiring a switch terminal of the board to the two tabs of one encoder ( push function). assigning it to VFR1200 in the GF menu
C:
Ribbon connecting the display to the board. For the Trx only one display is used.
D:
The two Board connectors driven by each encoder (see wiring diag)

Encoder wiring:
Depending on your transponder, Only One double decker encoder(fairly rare) or two double deckers encoders (here one deck only is used due to limitation of the GF soft, but very easy to use)

Myself and Rhys were thinking along the same lines of modding some go flight units with newer panels, thats just convinced me to do just that, Why does ones credit card now look worried?

Aparently the "remote Kits" are no more on the GF site but I am pretty sure that Mitch will accomodate a substantial order, Call them, they are very friendly on the phone. Avoid Emails.
I agree with Jack here. Use the phone to talk to them. Email may never get answered!
I was informed that Mitch no longer owns goflight. However, to my understanding there are some of these kits still available through third party flight sim market places.
