Title: Knob painting tutorial as requested!
Post by: brissydave on September 21, 2009, 04:01:51 AM
Hi guys,

As per original Boeing type knobs, the paint is applied in three layers.

The first layer is an all over coat of white.

The second layer is a black coat. A 1mm thick strip of adhesive is applied to create the thin white stripe and black is painted over top. strip is removed when dry to reveal thin white strip of white coat.

Third coat is the grey top coat. A 3mm adhesive strip is directly applied over the top of the 1mm strip to give the thicker outer black stripes. the 3mm strip is removed when dry to reveal three perfectly aligned stripes.

This system allows for "backlightable" knobs. These knobs are produced from a clear resin. The first coat of white allows the light to pass through, but the further black and grey coats stop any bleeding of backlight.
