Another easy one about N1 set and Speed Ref

Here's another one I hope you guys can answer easily for me.

First, I promise pics will follow but I'm on a roll finally and do not want to stop to post updates.

I have finally begun wiring my MIP (it's only been about two years) and I'm doing well, however...  I am working on the N1 Set and Speed Reference controls and I do NOT have any encoders with a PB and Rotary switches.  I do have dual concentric encoders with PB though, as well as 45 deg rotary switches.

What is the best way to go?  How are you guys without the proper switches getting both an encoder function to set the speeds and bugs, as well as the rotary switch function to select the various settings?

As far as I know, these are not modeled  and therfore not wired.
But I maybe wrong.

I dismantled my rotary switch, drilled through the centre shaft and rear cover. Then cut into 2 halves  the little coiled spring that keeps pressure on the ball bearing detents. Then reassembled with a piece of piano wire inserted into the new hole down the centre of the switch shaft. This piano wire engages with an encoder mounted to the rear of the switch. Here is someone's  tutorial, though I did not find it necessary to make the brass insert

Thanks David.  I may try that.
Sismo sells the proper switch but it is a bit pricey (for a replica switch).  Not even sure it is all modelled (as Jack said)

If I'm not mistaken, the only time you would ever need to use these controls is if both CDUs are not working, which means probably never. So it seems like a lot of work for nothing assuming it is even modelled.

The only problem was I built the speed ref/N1 panel before I knew what they did or did not. I like building :)

Hi Guys,

They are modeled and working with Project Magenta.
I did the same operation as David and this works perfect even though I suspect will never use them for any purpose than "showing them off".

I ended up just using a couple of encoders.  Once I get it all fired up with Prosim, I'll see what options I have and replace them if needed.

Hope to have it fired up tomorrow before dinner, and flying by the next day.  I did just get an email saying that my overhead has been shipped...  more on that once I update my build page

Hey guys, not exactly sure on all the different uses of those knobs however in my experience with 6 years on the airplane, the only time i ever use them is when departing from Orange County, KSNA.  That airport has a thrust cutback procedure for noise.  At the gate you set the green N1 markers to a reduced power setting from chart, usually about 80% or so based on weight.  Normal max power bleeds off takeoff until 800ft.. At that point the non flying pilot disconnects the autothrottle and pulls power back to that cutback setting. Flying pilot lowers nose to maintain v2+15 in the climb until 3000ft. At that point, Autothrottle back on and VNAV to continue the climb normally and clean up on schedule.  Thats the only time I have used em..

So, Mike, that basically means that there is really no point to wire thiis panel for the sim use? I just finished backlighting this panel and will be wiring  my MIP soon.

Well, up to you obviously but I don't think you really "need" to under normal operations.  Having said that, i know ill attempt to get mine working in my sim lol :)
