My 767 Build

Spent some time over the holidays getting some of Phil's panel led up. He made it easy on the recent ones, just plug in 5 volts and away you go. But I have a bunch of his panels from earlier in the year where he gives you a bag full of leds and resistors so a bt of work is required .... still worth it though and I even enjoyed all the soldering.   









Next step is to tackle lighting up the overhead.



Onward we go.

Don't know how you found the time over the holidays Henry, but wow .... nice work my friend!!  The backlighting looks great.  It's those little details that really start to bring your cockpit to life, right?  As will your Overhead Panel as it continues to take shape .... to me its just not a Boeing cockpit until the Overhead goes in!

I also like your multiple monitors - very nice - looks like they are giving you some quality visuals there ..... again, well done!!  Angus.

Mike, yes, the overhead panels are also from Phil.

Angus, know what you mean about the time, if it wasn’t for all the busyness, I would have finished the overhead panels too so I was lucky to get even this much done. 

One interesting thing that did happen ..... I was at a Christmas party and met a guy that was also interested in building his own cockpit so I invited him to come take a look sometime after the new year ..... well get this, he works for a company that manufacture simulators (FlightSafety International) and their Toronto office trains pilots on Bombardier aircrafts  (Dash 6, 7, 8-100/200/300 and Q400). They have 4 Level D (and 3 Level C’s) simulators and he has invited me to visit his office to try one out.

Tell you somthing its still surreal to see somthing ive made on somebody elses sim on the other side of the world, you wont beleve personally how rewarding that is its a real shot of motivation to get more things done and keep improving things here.

Yeah i admit i need to get my finger out of my arse and finish off the overhead, that will be one beast for sure once done, the MIP panel set is starting to come together here finally.

You know, the unfortunate thing is that these pictures don't do justice to how nice the panels really are. I have spend the last few evenings just sitting in the dark in my cockpit (which also acts as my main computer system so it's not like I'm just sitting there doing nothing when I'm not flying) with everything lit up (my wife is starting to question my sanity).

Trevor, the other website used to blow up the pictures when you click on them ..... am I posting them right here?

Phil, really looking forward to the rest of the overhead.... and yeah, love the way you did the backlighting on the new ones...very nice design ... did you solder all those little teeny components by hand yourself or did you use a wave solder machine?

Ali, I'm probably just down the road from you (near Iceland .... to those not from Toronto I'm referring to a hockey arena .... not the country  ) .... you're welcome to come by anytime.

I know exactly where that is, I used to drive by it all the time..    As for the pictures..  Yes, I have a resizer installed to try to keep things "ordly" It used to open a Highside viewer (with transparent background) when you would click on the file. (Like it does with attached photo's)  If you were to "Attach the photo's" Under advanced options of your post when you are typing it they would be small and when you click on them they would go big..  But for now, youa re doing it right, I just need to see if I can fix it better..  I will add this to the list..

This looks beautiful! And those visuals are fantastic too. We're having some slight issues with ours in that, during turns, each monitor view seems to slide away from each other so that the horizon doesn't stay as one, which you seem to have well sorted.

Actually that's the least of our issues at the moment, because several components of the sim are undergoing major surgery and so it's in several parts scattered throughout the workshop ... ! Once it's all done and fitted back together though, I can see my father just sitting in there with everything lit up for hours also, so you're not alone on that ...

Are you using an analogue TH2GO or the digital version?
I believe the digital version handles that issue much better than the analogue version...

Good question (and possible solution!). I'm not sure what we have actually, as that was all set up prior to my becoming so actively involved. I shall certainly find out though. Thanks!

I am easily getting smooth 30fps (locked) except in large cities (likely due to city car traffic from UTX) but it never drops below 15. Unlike FS9, FSX is still smooth even at 15fps. Mind you, this is still with graphics and autogen only set to dense and traffic set way down. Lots of clouds and thunder storms also take a toll on framerates. The trick is to never have framerates displayed .... just measure things with your eyes ... if there is smoothness and lack of stutters and blurries then you’re doing good. There still isn’t a computer available yet where you can max out everything in FSX, but it’s probably coming soon.

No new pictures Darryl ... not much has changed since January.

Since I got the new computer and able to run FSX properly I've been doing a lot of flying lately. Doesn't help that there's been a whack of good scenery coming out .... GEX Europe, UTX Alaska, Aerosoft Innsbruck X, FTX PNW etc .... lots of areas to explore. 

One new project that I am starting on soon is a new throttle. I will be getting some of the major parts from Gwyn (benefiting a little from the fact that he's currently working on Ken's 777 throttle which has some similar parts to the 767).

That really looks fantastic, you have certainly kept the bar in a place that most builders have to really strive to reach. Good luck in your continued build. Also no mdoubt having Phils awesome panels does help set it a cut above for sure.

Hey All

Been on a break from the cockpit for the last 2 years. About a year or so ago some of us 767 builders got a great deal from Phil on a complete set of overhead panels. Well, now the panels have started trickling in from Phil and the cockpit bug has gotten a hold of me again. A couple of questions:

- how do you put up pictures here? It's been a while and I can't seem to figure it out.

- is there any new cockpit parts suppliers that have pop up during the time I was away? I'm looking for korry type switches and knobs in particular.
