Hi Guys,

I'm trying to figure out how to make complex knobs such as the ones seen on the 737 EFIS.

Does anyone have any tips on how to make them? Namely... theres the RADIO/MINS/BARO rotary knob and the IN/BARO/HPA knobs which have two levels of rotating selectors. More still, there's buttons "RST" and "STD" on these knobs.

I think these are pretty close to what you're after

I think I still have a set at home if you want to see the individual parts

I'm not after 737 parts, I'm building a different plane, just trying to figure out how to make similar knobs.

These aren't 737 knobs, they are an off the shelf item for dual encoders
I'll post some pictures of how they work over the weekend .

but basically they  rely on a collet , the largest is tightened with a nut, the smallest with a screw on the end.
( pictures will make  more sense )

Hi,

Here are the pics,

I also bought some cheap knobs off ebay  (about £3 for 10 ) that use a similar mechanism
I think they  were also available in 4mm , but it was quite a while ago.
This might be a  cheap source of the collets if you wish to make your own knobs.

Thanks Dave, I didn't even know a dual concentric encoder existed! I thought I needed to drill a hole through one rotary encoder and shove another one through the first one.

I'm not sure how the collet  mechanism works but I'm sure it's simple and I'll figure it out. Great advice on getting those parts you suggested for the collets.

The dual shaft encoders are on the Leo Bodnar site as well , I bought one, but have never used it,
what I have done instead , and this might offend the purists :) , is to use a single encoder , with a push switch build in so you turn the knob for one setting, and push and turn for the other.
