I figured it was time to move on from my old thread as it had so many dead picture links in it and start a new one. The progress hasn't been noticeable as of late but I did manage to finish the landing-gear mechanism tonight.
I wasn't happy with the quality and realism of the unit I purchased so I tore it completely apart and built one myself from scratch, using only the knob and side plates from the old unit. I'm pretty happy with the end result, including the detail work. Movement is smooth and the upgraded spring setup provides a very nice feel.
The photo section on my website has updated pictures in the "instruments" folder, showing the construction of the mechanism to much greater detail.

It looks like you bought the same gear lever product as I did so many years ago. I upgraded mine around three or four years ago. It has held up well.

For my new build I'm having to modify the mount to a bottom attachment point. I haven't gotten that far with it yet though.

Yeah, the quality was poor. I can make these for the same price myself at twice the quality.
We live and learn, right?

Hey all!

It's been a while since my last post and I haven't updated my website lately either. Figured I'd wait until the sidewalls are done.
Here is at least a sneak peek of the upper sidewalls. They are pretty much ready for some filler, sanding and detail work.

Great job, Andre.

There's just something about doing it yourself...

Thanx for the update,

Frank Cooper

Flyboyandre

Figured I'd post a small update of the sidewall process so far. I still have a lot of work left but it's moving forward.
I have fabricated the mock window opener handles but haven't installed then yet.

Hi Andre.

In case you are looking for (fake) window openers, here's a link:

I bought a set of these and the base plates for my windows:

Good luck,

That's great reference material Frank! Thank you so much!

My pleasure, Andre.

I have bought some items from them (including the handles and holders) and their gear is top notch. They are evpensive, but at the same time, when I ordered gear from them, they saw that I was from Brisbane and refunded part of the shipping costs.

Gotta say, that's the first time that's happened to me in this industry.

It's hard to work on detail stuff when the word patience isn't in my vocabulary. Well, at least the captain's sidewall is getting close to done.

Can I ask you, Andre, from that last picture, does the real aircraft have the curve (arrowed below) in the sill like this.

I ask because, I'll be making this fixture myself very soon and would like the authenticity, if I can.

Thanx for any help,

Frank Cooper

Hey Frank, no I think the real thing has a straight rail. I made mine this way becase my shell is a bit wider in the back but I wanted to try to remain as close as possible to the interior dimensions, hence the slight curve. Hope that makes sense.

Thanx, mate. Perfect sense.

Captain's sidewall construction done. Now I just need to install the trim details I've crafted.

Getting very close. Not looking forward to starting on the opposite side.

Hi Andre.

Not sure if you are going to do your raceway covers. Here is how I did mine:

I bought this pine in the quad section of the hardware store. measured up the real raceway ribs and made the same for mine:

Cut them, chamfered the edges and glued them in place:

Then a quick sand:

And, a sheet of fibreglass to seal them:

The finished item:

I did this because I haven't seen anybody selling these as add-ons anywhere,

That's great Frank! Yeah, I was going to do them but didn't have s lot of reference. Now I do :)

Glad I could help, mate.

That part will come once I'm done with these sidewalls. I'm about halfway done with the construction part of the FO wall.

Very nice. Excellent perspective in that picture!

Yeah, I'm still alive guys and I've gotten some stuff done since last time. Not a ton, but some.
My motivation to build again came back during my trip to Norway when I visited Vidar, Geir and Øyvin.
Both flight management computers have been completely disassembled, sanded down and refinished. They are also mounted on a steel frame I welded so they can drop right into the cdu bay.
These are the CDU's I purchased from Frank Cooper.

I'm also putting together a new blog to replace the website since it was too time consuming to keep it up. More to come....
