Post by: dharrison on August 30, 2011, 11:35:21 AM
All,

Bob and I were talking and thought it might be a good idea to get a one-stop-shop of all the ongoing projects here at Cockpitbuilders.

If you have a pit or not a pit, time to show us your set-up!!!!!

Please post the following

Picture or pictures of your setup and also a link to your build thread if you have one!

Let's see how many pits we have out there.

Hi Guys,

Mine is similar to Jacks,

7 computers, PM suite, One beamer (BenQ WXGA), Ace Yoke, no shell or liner, B737 non motorized TQ, FDS CDU with color screen, CP Flight MCP/EFIS and MIP737 card, Poldragonet Overhead with OC instruments, Full Radio bay - mix of CP Flight/OC,
MIP w AFDS and six packs/ radio bay / engine fire bay / glare shields are self made.
Flight Illusion flap gauge/break gauge, Intercom, EFB (Electronic Flight Bag), Buttkicker Gamer.

Flight Model in FS9 / PM is a modified Opensky B738.
"Dispatch" program = TopCat.  TSR Autobrake Pro installed.  SA_WXR weather radar.
Active Sky weather. REX clouds.  Ultimate Terrain ground.

Runs FS9 flawless on the C2D and Intel SSD equipped FS computer.
However the SSD did not do very much difference from my "old" WD Raptor, but it starts WIN "in a blink".
Will not "upgrade" to FSX in a loooong time  ;) , mostly because lack of FSX Scandinavian airport scenery.

As seen in the picture - at the moment a HUGE front view, but the front windows will restrict it when in place.

well, here is a look at mine so far.. Just getting it all back together and waiting for the TX heat to break (any week now). Not much has changed on the build side of things.

•Simulation Platform:  Xplane and FS9-10
•Aircraft Type:            737
•Software Used           Own
•Hardware Used          Mostly phidgets, trying a few other interfaces to mix in as well.

You guys make my heart lift at seeing such fantastic projects and at the same time fall to the floor at knowing I'll NEVER have the room to create such beautiful works of art.
I work away - slowly but surely at creating my ATR72 but enjoying the fun of moving forward just an inch each day I complete a small task.
I content myself with flying the ATR using my scaled down test panels and believing that someday in the not too distant future, I will look up and see my MIP and pedestal together with a couple of out of the windows dispays all finished and working.

Mikeh,
you will get there! Thats the way most of us start these projects, small scaled down test panels and Project boxes with switches and lights all over them :) I still remember my EPIC test box for those of us who remember those! lol

My sim career has progressed through two different apartments and it continues now in its second house. Only Reason i have room now is because i moved to TX where everything is bigger including garages :)

Keep at it, like you said you will open your eyes oneday and be sitting in a pit!

Here is my 737NG Sim, currently using Prosim 737, Mix of real 737 parts, FDS, Innovative, and a home built shell.   FSX and PMDG are the software in use.  Lots more work to do but it is very flyable.

I have ordered a dual linked yoke from ACE and after receipt I am planning for a new-bigger-better-wider cockpit base to host both dual linked yokes and a 737 FDS shell which is my next order...

nope :)

But dont be fooled, shipping was nearlly 1 grand and that was done on the cheap as u can tell.

my 75 was worth 2.5k cause it was missing yokes, TQ, MIP, PED and overhead plastic trim, a good one will set u back 5 to 7k gbp, i finf the 73 and 74 is about the same price, 737NG your looking at the best part of 15K

DOnt know about the ATR 72 though, never seen one of those scrapped in the UK before

There was a 42 I could have had but I just don't have the space or the money... I'm hopefully getting some bits off it though heh... tiny, tiny bits.

My homebuilt cockpit will have to do... but I can dream.

1st Pic is how she flew last in 1991.  N392PA

•Simulation Platform: CaptSim 727
•Aircraft Type:            727-200
•Software Used          PM Systems
•Hardware Used         Original & Phidgets so far

Haven't done anything for some time.  Throttle is in the house and the overhead is just about done.  I also have the APU panel and some other parts.  Only missing a couple of small panels for the interior.  Yokes were redone by AHPS and have all seat cushions and covers.

I don't know. I'm just kicking the idea of a real shell around right now. I'd rather build one like Ivar did. I still have some information about that somewhere. I also remember very clearly how I built the last 727 partial shell.

I really wish Peter still offered the shell kit made from wood instead of that aluminum model. It looked much more like a real aircraft structure.

I'll probably end up building it out of wood just because it's cheap and easy to work with. There is also the fact that interior panels are getting scarce for the 727 and I would be building most of the supporting structure that would be right under the plastic skin I would use as I did on my other 727. The aluminum shell kit doesn't take that into consideration and there are no supporting elements for the different interior panels on the 727 except for the eyebrow window trim, and those aren't even the same between the 727 and the NG model.

Throwing in some shots of my sim here also. It is considered a nearly finished build, and the only thing left to do on this one is making the rudder pedal setup. Other than the rudder pedals, it will stay as it is. No more modifications will be done on this sim as it is in a very good working shape.
I am slowly collecting parts for a second simulator at the moment  ;) But I wont post anything on the second until the build is actually starting. Secret project at the moment  :D

My sim was initially based on Project Magenta, and my sim also works best with that software + the TSR addition. Very stable setup that fly well. When I started building my sim I was hoping to be able to finish a MIP, but it turned out to something special. Now it has a complete shell with interior, backwall with circuitbreakers, Ipeco seats, Large FOV visuals and various parts from many different vendors. Lot of homemade parts also.
Here the pictures.  :)

Ivar,

Is that backwall and circuit breakers real or the made up versions from FDS (breakers) and the adhesive labels? If you combined these and built, how did you do it? Did you use plexi for the backers and build-out for structure support. If they're real, what did you have to do to build-out for them?

Thanks to Jack notifying me to a Ebay auction :) They are non functional and just for making the immersion.Having the proper enclosuer of the sim with the correct stuff in there really make the difference. No need to fly the sim at all. Having a coffee inside it does it all ;)

Hey Ivar,

Would you mind getting your "old man" self up  ;D  :idiot: and taking a picture for us? Would like to see the space in between the cockpit door and the Ped. Is it 21-22 inches in between there and did go with the items on the inside like the coat closet, the jump seat (behind the capts seat) and the other side where there is an recessed opening?

Like in this attached picture you'll see the items in question...

Thank you and Best Regards,

BSD

I dont have access to my sim at the moment as I am abroad for a while. So I only have my old photos available. I will put them on my website in a while, but not sure if I have pictures of the details you need though. Regarding the drawings... I am pretty sure I used the measurements found on markuspilots website. My laptop is at repair so I cant confirm at the moment as I dont have access to all my 737 files  :'(

OK, So it's not much progress yet but I have to keep telling myself this is a weekend project . . .

I whipped up a small website to document the sim and blog my progress at www.mycessnasim.info (http://www.mycessnasim.info). I've actually made a lot more progress than what's pictured on the site, but don't have any pics of the most recent work. But I'm hoping to update the pics later this week.

Beyond what's shown on the site I have a back wall installed, the doors, hinges, and latches installed, seat rails and seats, rudder bars and pedals, and I recently acquired an upper engine cowl. The fuselage is now in my micro garage which is too much of a disaster area to take pics in so as soon as I can role it outside this week I'll get more pics and update the site.

Comments and feedback are always welcome. Several of you directly or indirectly have contributed to the progress I've made so far and to much of the planning for the future work. MANY THANKS!!!

I troll the posts regularly and am amazed by the work of others and their knowledge.  I had to accept that I simply don't have the real estate in my home to build what I truly want and that day might still come.  But for now I have simply enlarged my rolling pedestal.  It was originally built for my GF modules but I have now branched out with custom switches using a BU0386X.  I plan on adding more.  For now I have made a larger area to support those switches I have now (part of the overhead panel).

    Simulation Platform: FSX
    Aircraft Type: iFly 737
    Software Used: FSUIPC
Hardware Used: GF modules and custom switches (BU0386X)

So here's what I've been up to: Nearly finished my 777 but my father passed away 3 years ago and it took me a awhile to regain interest in the hobby. When I did, I sold off the 777. Got tired of constantly writing code and not flying.

Then I built this:
(https://www.cockpitbuilders.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fanthonyscott.zenfolio.com%2Fimg%2Fs11%2Fv28%2Fp144020683-4.jpg&hash=1dd54699fcbd701089a731306526369c1b5806a9)
Link to this gallery: http://anthonyscott.zenfolio.com/f-16 (http://anthonyscott.zenfolio.com/f-16)

But.. that was an ambitious project and I found myself writing more code and vacillating between different sim engines, complicating that whole code-writing dilemma... Eventually I would part it out and sell off the rest. (Although I still have the seat.. that thing was fun!)

Today I am building a nice little King Air B200 Hybrid. There's a lot of different panel styles out there and I wanted to somehow add the Cirrus SR-22 styling to the plane. What resulted were a few different mockups, changes to paint color and some other tweaks until I got it just right. It's still far from complete but I am building AND flying.

(https://www.cockpitbuilders.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fanthonyscott.zenfolio.com%2Fimg%2Fs2%2Fv52%2Fp713535623-4.jpg&hash=36cc4768fc7e4d142b4bfce19cae82d81602e531)
Link to this gallery: http://anthonyscott.zenfolio.com/b200 (http://anthonyscott.zenfolio.com/b200)

This sim uses the Ruscool interface which is working out nicely. I no longer use EPIC. It was good, but again.. coding... Even with the B200 you can see in the gallery I was venturing down that tired coding road until the CFO (Wife) gave the go-ahead to purchase the FlightIllusion engine gauges. (LOVE those!)

I'm Using FSX but may switch to X-Plane since there's now something that interfaces FSUIPC to X-Plane. The radios are real, with the guts replaced with GF-166 radios (The older ones with the dual concentric encoders. (Anyone have a spare GF166 they want to sell? I need one more...) This sim will use the Avidyne Entegra PFD and MFD standalone gauges from Ellie Systems (Coded by Don Lafontaine)

Thanks for looking!

Welcome Back Ray..  Good to see you here.  When you get a chance could you give me the dimensions of the FI gauges..  Mark tells me they won't fit in my real MIP, but I am going down the route of a new MIP Instead.  I am just curious what the size would be.

Thanks a bunch.

Hi Trevor,

I feel your pain as I "thought" I had milled the correct dimensions prior to the FI gauge arrival. I was so wrong. While I cannot really give you a proper dimension, if you DO decide to get them (Highly recommended) I'd wait until they arrive to see exactly how to mill the holes.

Hi Ray,

Welcome to the fray! So, your F16 is decomissioned, but you still have the seat right? If you haven't read already, my wife, Simlady is building an F16 and items from your seat or the entire thing would be a great interest to her. How about sending me a PM, if you want to sell it, as well as let me know if you have anything else in regards to hardware and software for the F16...

Also, I have been thinking of getting the radios from the ProSim parts that fsavaitor (Warren) got his from, so that means you and I could workout something with the two GoFlight GF166A units I have for the F16 seat or parts there of.

PM me,

John

Thanks Ray, He did mention to me that he has a pro-line of B200 engine gauges that don't have the digital readouts that will fit in the proper holes.  I will just have to have a look and see what I am going to do.  For now, I am going to use software engine instruments.

OK Nat, how did you manage to hide the Airliners.net logo from your pictures? Or did those pics come from your visit to CAE?

In the very unlikely possibility that these pics are really your actual sim pictures, then I see no reason why you are not starting yet on your next project....the DreamLiner since you can never be totally happy with what you got. After all, I don't see any missing gauges anywhere :)

Great photography by the way. Did you hire a pro or what camera do you use?

Fantastic job Nat!

not sure if it was on or just poor viewing angle in those shots.

Im sure it is but is that the trim motor running that much in the background on approach and landing?  Is the autopilot on trimming it that much?

Looks great though!

FPL cooperating? Are you kidding me? If you ever want to buy a motion platform make sure the motors are 240v or you gonna be very frustrated , or pay a lot more you anticipated on the first place, 3- phase power is a no no. I ordered a generator from Miami, $18k  :(

Would replacing the motors be less expensive, also in the operation of the sim ?

Ill start with my F-4 Phantom sim, the shell is a 1967 Link trainer that I attached a real F-4 canopy to and opens with air. I just added a three projector visual system for a 45 degree view. (no good pics of the new visuals yet)

I have a couple of g suits that plugs into the pneumatic system and is triggered by the computer and makes for a very interactive experience when pulling g. Im nearly finished integrating a real IFF panel to use as a Transponder for flight with pilot edge.

I use FS9 and the main PC runs the visuals with Eyefinity via three windows opened in flightsim. Eyefinity allows the multiple windows/projectors to run on one PC in fullscreen mode. Two client computers run various systems, such as FSMAP for the radar screen and instructor station software. I started its restoration in 2007.

My DC-8-31 is mainly in storage, parked 400+ miles from where I live. It was gutted and Ive slowly collected parts for it. last summer I finally got a radome. This plane was part of the original 1955 Pan Am order that launched DC-8 production. It was the 1st DC-8 to fly to South America. For a while I had it partially interfaced to FS9 and thats where I learned how to use FSUIPC for 4 engine pot control and how to add a tiller to FS9. We had a Christmas party in it in 2006 with 13 people inside and that was a blast. Everyone took turns flying. I cannot wait to get it interfaced again! i am currently building a trailer for it to permamently mount to so that it can be moved from its current storage location. On a drop axle trailer it is nearly 15 feet tall.

Wow, that is very cool and some very unique projects Justin.  I worked on some F-4s during training in the Navy way back in '88 on the Martin Baker ejection seats and looks like you have one sitting there.   Awesome.   Would love to travel to Kansas to see your sims first hand someday when you get your DC - 8 going!

welcome to CB!

Thank you Scott. I would like that as well. I hoped to bring it to Wichita in May for static display at Cockpit-Fest but can see I wont be able to make it happen this year.

Instead Im helping my brother interface some functionality to his AH-1 Cobra simulator via FS9 so that the pilot's seat will be flyable at Cockpit-Fest. This sim is tall at 9 feet. This was a trainer shell grafted to a real Cobra cockpit. We are slowly collecting parts so we can remove part of the sim shell and place the cockpit back on Cobra landing skids. The mounts are also still in place to attach the wings.

The MK7 seat is one I have put together from parts over the years. My buddy built the stand for it. The bottom of the seat come from an F-4D that was placed on the range at Holloman AFB as a ground target. My sim has its original MK5 simulator seat. The Phantoms produced in the 60's had the -5 seats and were upgraded with zero zero ejection Mk7 in the 70's. Those seats are still in service today with multiple Air forces around the globe.

1 more Avidyne bezel to go. All the sim needs really is a functioning autopilot, a transponder radio and that's pretty much it, save for the window framing and a few side panels.

A recent pic of the 737-200 sim with most of the lights on. Hard to belive this started as a gutted cockpit. Ill include pics of when the project started. None of these are simulated panels, most are from a United 737.

The white floods run on 400hz AC through the original dimmer switches. It is using two 5v transformers for the Edge Lighting. There are two 28v DC power supplies for the inverter, and three 12 v power supplies for various systems. 3v DC powers some of instrument flags.

Here is my BAe146 simulator.

My main goal here was never  to have this look like an aircraft from the outside, but a simulator from the inside.

I am not using any payware platform because there just isn't one that can interface nicely like PM etc. (Everyone wants to build a B737). So basically I am using a BAe download add-on for my basic Aircraft platform and then using my 'self designed' "Lamp Module interface" to operate some of the systems in concert with FS9.

The center panel is 100 percent operational using Open Cockpits USB servo motor cards to operate the modified engine gauges, flaps etc. The Master warning system was re-lamped with LED's and will eventually be fully operational.

At present I am using Leo Bodnars 836X board to interface (thru FSUIPC) the thrust levers, landing gear, flaps, roll and pitch control etc etc. and any other switches I can connect up and run directly to Fs9

Note that most, if not all the parts are original 146 specific, therefore the control column(s) had to be modified as well with pots etc for operation. All items on the control column work (pitch/roll,AP disconnect, and electric trim).

The rudder pedals are not original equip but rather from Flight Deck Solutions.

My 'Lamp Module interface' was designed out of necessity as I wanted all the lights and bells to work, but also wanted specific items in Fs9 to respond as well...an example of how the system works would be the landing gear selector switch.

The landing gear switch sends an up and down input to fs9 thru the 836X board to operate the landing gear...it also sends an output to a separate IO board that contains a programmable microprocessor chipset. This IO board will then operate all the required lamps on the landing gear selector panel ... in harmony with Fs9.

It should be noted that fs9 has no control over these lights, however the operator will never know the difference.

Another simple example would be the 'Park Brk On' mws caption. When the parking brake lever is selected to 'park'...Leo's 836X board receives the input to place the parking brake 'on' in fs9, while another io board turns on the mws lamp.

I have a direct switch set located inside each N2 gauge that will illuimate/extinguish the respective 'engine lo oil pressure' light on the master warning system. These lights are slightly altered from engine to engine, but the rough parameters are to have the engine oil pressure lights extinguish and illuminate at 38% n2.

After a long debate, I have decided to go with 24 inch LED screens for my outside visuals using WideView. My initial direction was projectors, but the cost/heat was too prohibitive for me. Eventually I will have 7 screens running off 7 computers.

As you can see my visual system forward view is not centered on the aircraft centerline...that is to say it is not lined up with the center aircraft window post.....and nor should it.

I have noticed that a lot of builders do this, and in the real aircraft that is not what the view looks like...in fact when flying with the forward view directly in the center, it feels uncomfortable...especially on takeoff and landing

I have found that...while sitting in the Captains seat, you should see just about the the entire runway in your field of view...that is to say you should see most of the numbers and the centerline should be directly in-line (in my case) with Nav 1. The far most screen on the left and right should be the same distance from each side of your head.

There are a lot of nice simpits on this forum...hopefully you will let me pick your brain(s) in an effort to finish mine!

Hi,
i am looking to your cockpits and i am about to be jealous, here in Czech Republic can't get real cabin from Jet plane :)
So we help ourself with what we can. Personally i built cockpit from corrugated cardboard. It is not Pro cockpit, but it's start.
Shape is inspired by F-22 Raptor, Textures are from Su-7,Su-25 and some other rusty planes from local museum.
Trying to fly DCS World.
Joystick-throttle Thrustmaster Warthog, pedals Saitek Pro Flight Combat
32 gb ram, i7 Graphic Card Zotac gforce Titan Black
Oculus Rift Dk.2
before Oculus it was  TrackIr with Benq short throw projector.

Here is built render http://youtu.be/I-kasUg17j0 (http://youtu.be/I-kasUg17j0)

Geez, my room needs to be cleaned up.  Still waiting on my overhead, should ship Sept 26-30.  Too much wood showing.  Any thoughts on hiding it? I was thinking black material to cover from under the monitors forward to the edge of monitor stand and then down to the floor.

JetMax B738, Throttle Quad, Overhead, PFC Yoke & Rudder Pedals, B737 Capt Seat, Running on 2 computers, FSX & 3-40" Sony monitors on the I-7-4790K, GTX780TI Video Card. Corsair H100i Water cooled, 2-SSD drives, 2.5 TB on two HD's.  Sim-Avionics Computer-I7-950,  GTX 480, GTX 750, GTX780, 1-SSD and about 5 different HDD's (this is my old FSX Computer)

MIP from MDF. overhead was a poldragonet kit, I have used pokeys cards and phidgets LED outputs
OC MCP. FMCs and Efis (and 7 seg. displays).

not backlit, display is 3 x 55" LED TVs
Radios are self built from ebay panels and pokeys.
Pedestal is MDF
Control is Saitek yokes and pedals
Throttle is jetmax non-motorised budget version.
runs on Prosim737.

Custom making the interior right now out of foam insulation board (extruded polystyrene).
Lots of cutting and sanding to form the shapes but well worth it I think.

Thank you all for the kind words!
I used to shape surfboards as a youngster and this is very similar. I think I've crossed into the "Aim too high, never fly" zone now though.
I find it VERY difficult to settle for "good enough" and it is really slowing down the build, but I just can't stand the thought of sitting there on the enroute portion of a flight with time to look around the pit and saying to myself "Damn, I should have.......!)
I'm trying to learn to let go!!! I think I have a problem needing professional help!!! :-\

Once done shaping, I will hardcoat the foam, paint it then spray a polyeurethane to protect it. Should be good.
Oh, and Axel, I can't wait to see it finished too!!! Thanks for all your help Brother!!

Craig,

Wish you would make some how to videos on your process for You Tube.  I'd love to learn how to do that.  If & when I decide to do some sort of custom enclosure for my 1/2 flight deck those skills would come in handy.  Don't know that anything off-the-shelf would work for me.

Thanks guys!!
I kind of make it up as I go so it isn't a perfect science but once I feel confident of the best practice and move on to the FO side I will try to put something together that illustrates the process.
I can tell you I've found several ways NOT to do it  :o
Fred, if you've shaped yours from wood this will be a breeze!
The key for me will be finding the best process for coating it,painting it and protecting it.
I met a guy locally who creates large foam props and figures for Disney and the like who is giving me some pointers on what to use on a BUDGET!!! I'm just not yet at the point to start that phase as I'm not done with the shaping etc.....
My Wife, 3 kids and a full time job have to fit in there as well so it may be a week or two until I can report some results.
Maybe I'll start another thread this weekend with some more pics and explanations.
Stay tuned!!!!

Too much wood showing.  Any thoughts on hiding it?

Your visual display seems to sit far too high (maybe it is the picture angle)
Your line of vision should be flush with the glareshield angle and you should not see the bottom of the monitors when your seat is adjusted for flight.
just a thought!

Title: Re: Post Your Pit!!!! 1000 Member Show and Tell
Post by: Caflyt on October 03, 2014, 04:18:51 PM
Nick,
I took what you did and made a few changes (which I plan on changing again...explain shortly).
I used a crossmember made from extruded aluminum from a company named 80/20 Inc. http://www.8020.net (http://www.8020.net)
I also got three linear bearings from them for the mechanism. Everything is similar to yours except this mechanism (roll axis only at this point) which I made by attaching the lower chain drive to the center bearing to be moved when roll inputs are introduced sliding the bearing along the aluminum guide. The outer two bearings flanking the center bearing are connected to each other with a spring or two so that when the center bearing moves it "pushes" the outer bearing on one side while the opposit bearing is held stationary and the spring tries to pull it back to center. I used a lid hinge and modified the slide or guide to only allow the bearing to move in one direction. When the control input is released the center bearing is forced back to its starting position by the sprung bearing it was pushing...(does that make any sense??)
I also added some gas Pistons to dampen the springy feel so it was more fluid and doesn't just "snap" back.
Now for the bad news.... I have found that the aluminum cross members "twist" too much to be used as a crossmember so I have decided to re-engineer the vertical columns and support crossmember out of steel instead of aluminum and weld the crossmember to the vertical columns to make the structure as rigid as it needs to be. I will of course maintain the aluminum one as a
guide for the linear bearings but it will not be relied upon for structural support.
I will try to take some better pictures as these are not as explanatory as they could be.

Hi Craig,

Thanks for the pictures, Craig!

I think I understand how it works. Two outer bearings instead of my swinging plates. Instead of mine central stopping pin you have lid hinges that stop the other outer bearing from following the central one when it pushes another bearing.

Would be nice to see the video.  ;) Also could you post the pictures of the top yoke column assembly?
Another thing I noticed - you have some kind of insert for the bottom sprocket shaft. What did you use?

I moved my yokes assembly into simulator and it's very rigid. But I already have an idea of redesigning the mechanism and add the ability to "motorize" it.  I will just build a new assembly.  But not right now - need to work more on sim itself.

May be we should start a new thread for this. :idiot:

Hello Everyone,

I love all the simpits and this is a great idea for everyone to share different varieties to build.I had the privilege flying on the C-9a nightingale back in the late 80's and 90's as medic in the USAF, but my love for the Douglas/McDonnell Douglas twin engines started as a boy growing up right next to Lambert St. Louis in the early 70's watching all the classics from my back yard.  There is nothing like the scream and roar of the JT8D engines.  So, there is the brief history of where my passion of these old gas hogs comes from.  I always wanted to be a DC-9 or MD-80 pilot for TWA, but I enjoy another passion of the career I'm in now, so in a way I get to have both with this awesome sim hobby.  I have FSX, on a AMD 8 Core 4gz,  55" HD TV for scenery monitor and 27" for instrument display.  I am using SAITEK controls (for now).  I Have 2 Bodnar boards controlling all switches and some LED lights.  The "printed out gauges/instruments" are to signify what still need to be built and to ad some realism :)  The two aircraft I use are the Coolsky DC-9 and the Leonardo SH Maddog 2010 Professional.  Currently, I can't decide which one to commit to; I'm leaning toward the DC-9 after doing some research on making my own gauges (THANK YOU TREVOR!)  I know it's a "hardware store special" haha, but made do with my budget, and some day get some real parts.  This is only a year into the build so not bad after getting tired of flying the desk.

Here are few pics and vids of my 'pit.  Check out my media library for more.  ENJOY!..I hope :)

Mike

PS thanks ALL for advice so far esp Trevor!

Hello everybody,
Not a real cockpit but my little convertible flightdeck! DIY throttle quadrant and a couple of switches all built from USB joysticks and gamepads. On the android tablet I run FlightGauge, a very cheap and useful solution for basic instruments.

I currently plan to build an ATR cockpit, that's how I found this forum. I saw the users Mikeh and neomorph discussed this but I didn't get a hold of them. So any tips are much appreciated.
Happy flying everybody!

My 737 NG (BBJ or 800) is nearing completion.  Visual system goes in next month.  It will be a 200 x 45 degree field of view system with three short throw projectors.  That means cleaning out much of the remaining 3-bay garage  :)
The overhead assembly is nearing completion.  The window line on the shell had to be cut and made into a convertible top for removal.  This allows moving it out of the garage one day when I move, or sell it.
This is basically a Sismo Solutiones cockpit running Prosim on P3D.
The cockpit is fully functional including stick shakers, full throttle quad functionality, and with a hybrid audio system that includes vibration transducers (ButtKickers) in the seats.
It is a 100% scale cockpit which meant lots of custom LCD placement and custom sizing.
Not shown yet are the circuit breaker panels under construction which are on hinged removal panels that fold rear-ward when not needed for training.  They have actual 737 circuit breaker panels in place (non-functional).
Hope to have it complete by middle of next year.  The device will be capable of FAA Level 4 certification as an AATD. Visitors are welcome when in Orlando.

My new FDS 744 is coming together nicely thanks to PSX, XP10, Natvis Simulator Displays, and the expertise of Jon Boe. Not sure what sort of sorcery Nat used to produce a perfectly seamless 202FOV XP10 wraparound view, but it's absolutely stunning! There are still lots of software kinks to get worked out and input/output assignments to be completed, but that's half the fun, right?

You may want to refer to the guide that is at this web site. They sell projection screen paint and it seems like a good product, even though I have no personal experience with it.

Hi to all:

Here are some  some pics. of my sim. You can see the conversion of the FDS Rudder Pedals
to accommodate the PFC Yoke. Up until today, I don't have enough space for a full enclosure, so I project on a wall. I have been tempted to move it to the garage, however, this been South Florida, we have had a few, not so very pleasant experiences with our sometimes capricious weather. We once had a garage flood during hurricane Wilma, hence my reluctance to do it.

Here is a You Tube link  of the sim in action I just posted. It is a bit long because it shows the functioning of the TQ during all phases of flight, including a go around. I used three cameras. I selected Toncontin International Airport ( MHTG )  due to its short circuit and the RNP approach. It is also quite challenging.

If I can secure a space large enough inside the house other than the garage, then I will go for a full enclosure :).

Here are some current pics of the Sabreliner......after getting the cockpit 100% complete except for the APU panel, I am deep into the interfacing and systems programming. It's time to dig back into the wiring harness, which means stuff must come out again.....behold, no co-pilot panel! The super-bright pic is with the original thunderstorm lights on so you can see behind the panel better...those suckers are BRIGHT! They heat up the cockpit too.......

I am tracing out the harness for the thrust reverser annunciators right now. Rather than hack right into the lovely harness right below the glareshield, I'm trying to trace the wires where they disappear behind the panel, for a cleaner and non-molested look.

I've mentioned this elsewhere, I am basically building the airplane's systems from scratch in software as I interface the cockpit. Rather than rely on X-Plane's built-in systems, I am separately simulating everything according to maintenance manuals, the AFM, checklists, input from Sabreliner pilots, and the pilot training manual (which is a goldmine). This software will then talk to X-Plane's built-in systems where appropriate. For instance, I have my own simulation of the generators (complete with their own failure modes, link to engine RPM and electrical load, and connections to the DC electrical buses), but X-Plane's built-in generator objects will be driven by the state of my generators.

I was about to dig into the thrust reverser system in my software, but then realized I need to build the entire hydraulic system first, because that's what drives the TRs! So now I am studying more, and coding individual classes for pumps, hydraulic and pneumatic check valves, accumulators, etc. It will allow for a very detailed and interesting simulation. For instance, what happens when the bleed-air check valve for the TR accumulator fails in the open position? We'll find out! :)

I have to add though, there was much ribbing at my expense for letting Bob beat me to switching over to X-Plane 10...

I look forward to when us three can get together again....Bob Reed, wish you could have joined us in person instead of via live streaming...

Here goes! After many years of poundering the in's and out's I've decided to go ahead. This is my first post in PyP. (Post your Pit).
I will try to keep you inform as I go along in that project

On order with FDS : B737NG-PRO-MX-DSTD + Sim-A, with JetMax-737TQ-STD, until they start making their own motorise one for
wich I will trade. Links yokes and rudders from Simutabs. All equipments to be delivered in coming
september. Can't wait to have everything. I know I'm moving unto unknown grounds for installation
end of the sim.But the community + friends are there to help in. But frankly, it's frightening. From
reading about all of you guy's, I feel I'm way behind in computor and electronics knowledge. I'll have
top notch equipment to start with. All what's left to be done is to put it together and go out flying.

A few quick pics of my baby, taken today at Launceston, Tasmania.

She's a beautiful thing and now has a nice FDS forward overhead, thanx to Scott from CB, here.

Of course it's a 738, nearly all FDS including shell, MIP and CDU bay, liners and rear overhead.

RSP Platinum automated throttle and beautiful Sim world gauges throughout. 5 pc's, three running dedicated IG's to high def short throws on a 200 degree screen.

Avionics is Prosim and sim is P3D V 3.3.

Three years and it's finally flying. Just doing functionals now and hope to participate in Worldflight this year with my friends from New Zealand who are coming to share the flight deck.

Very nice! Congrats on completing your project. I think you're probably the first on a global scale, let alone the US.

My goal is kinda similar to this - does your sim comply with FAA (and ARINC 610 Standards if you're using real equipment)?

If yes, are you using FSX/P3D, Xplane, or something else?

How much did it cost you to certify your sim level D?

Thanks,
Youssef

The registration was the simple part, a few thousand for level C and another several thousand for level D (with is pending until imhave active control loading which i will have in 4 days).
Yes, i know it is the first in a global scale but i wanted to be modest.

I use p3d v4

I dont have the exact room dimensions in the top of my head. But i can tell you this: i have only 1 inch of spare room on the sides with full roll and heave. And the cielings are 15 feet tall. The only reason i know this is because it took me a long time to find a place in nyc with cielings this tall that can accomodate the sim

I cant help but notice how choppy your framerates look in some of the videos?   Don't you have to maintain a certain level of FPS to get certification?   With 4K tvs are you running multiple visual pcs?   With P3D v4 running 3x1080p screens with surround on one pc (Nvidea gtx1080 and 7700 cpu overclocked I get very good frames and no choppiness but I know if I went to 4K on each it would kill my frames.

Looks fantastic on your 4K screens but too choppy

I had a real world 738 pilot and subscriber to my YT channel come over the other day and his first words were "holly shit your stream does not do justice to the visuals". And that is because im running 4k in 3 x 85 inch TVs. And im using go pro cameras to capture the images. Maybe you guys can help me out, but i still havent figured out how to make the image in the sim look as good in the stream as it does in person. i tried different settings and even bought 4 go pro 6 cams which im installing tomorrow.
Just so you know, i very rarely get fps below 60. And there are no studders. Im using 1 pc for p3d v4 with an i7 6950x 10 cores with HT off. Core 0 and 1 are clocked at 45, and the rest of the cores are all clocked at 43. I have 3x gtx titan pascal video cards in non-sli configutation.
As to all of the comments about the certification, do note that this is in my home, and is not a business and i dont ever plan to rent it out. Is just a very expensive toy. So if you think im lying and even bother to send me PMs claiming that im lying..... just know this: you will never be in a position where you paid me money, came to the sim and demanded a refund because you felt like the certification was false or fake. So who really cares? Enough with the sarcasm and the PMs about the FAA. All i wanted to do is share my toy with the community!

Almost forgot, if you're streaming the video, it'll be network speed bottleneck slowing it down; especially, when on the same net as the sim. If recording with GoPro's what fps per second are they set at? Also, are the GoPro's running off the battery or are they plugged into 5 volt USB power while recording? Plugging them is better I think...

Keep at it though, it's all just a matter of tweaking.

Are you using separate streaming software and a computer setup to do the streaming side? If so, which one...knowing this will help in finding the best settings for streaming your flights. Also, are you trying to stream 4k onto YouTube, if so what is your DSL/Cable speed and type, as well as bandwidth rates?

Yes. Im using obs or xsplit sometimes running from a completely different networked machine that is not the best but is pretty legit. It is an alienware i7 cpu. I have 3 gopro 6 cams that are each hooked up to one of those hdmi to usb 3.0 capture cards (i forgot the name).

Im not trying to stream in 4k,but i might. The go pros are set up at 1080p and i have the google internet that is 1tb per se ong. So bandwidth is the least of my concers. But streaming to you tube in 1080p
Title: Re: Post Your Pit!!!! 1000 Member Show and Tell
Post by: blueskydriver on October 10, 2017, 06:09:40 AM
Nico,

Not knowing the full extent of your "broadcast" setup and your 1TB Google Internet connection, all I can do is offer some ideas of what the problem is. Here they are:

1. Even though you have 1TB Google internet, that only says the download speed most times, but for streaming the upload rate is what you look at.

2. On the Google 1TB, is the data rates locked in or is that the up to 1TB value. Again, not knowing how Google network is doing this for you, is this connection dedicated or shared. I read that it's usually setup in apartments and condos only in major cities where Google offers it, so if it's shared, much how cable networks work (it slows down when more users in the neighborhood connect). So, that is why I asked dedicated or shared. How about you do a network speed test with speedtest.net

3. What are the broadcast settings in OBS or XLS? These settings matter a lot for streaming, even at 1080. So, please post what these settings are.

4. Having an Alienware with I7 CPU is great, but says nothing about the motherboard speeds or it's bandwidth (or bus speeds). So, post more about the motherboard.

5. I am assuming with the Google 1TB they provide 1TB Network Interface Card (NIC) to go into the Alienware computer right? If yes, then go back to broadcast settings or the motherboard speeds. If no, what is the NIC you have then?

6. The HDMI to USB Capture Card(s), are they actual computer cards that are installed inside the Alienware Computer? If not, are they little boxes that you plug into the computers USB port(s) and are you using 3 of these boxes, with all 3 plugged into the computers USB ports? If I am understanding this right and you're using the little boxes, that means you're using only the USB ports that are a part of the same motherboard bus, in which case we're back to bandwidth of the motherboard.

7. However, I'd like too know why HDMI to USB? I am guessing again here, sounds like you're using a small cable that plugs into the GoPro 6 camera(s) micro hdmi port and allows you to have hdmi coming out from them, then you're using the little boxes to convert the hdmi to usb and you plug the usb into the usb port(s) of the Alienware computer's motherboard? If I am right, then that is your problem all together.
Basically, you are asking the motherboard to handle 3 cameras coming in through the 1 USB bus and depending on the camera settings, you are trying to push up to 640MegaBytes/sec (USB 3.0 rate). And, you're using three GoPro 6 cameras all at 1080 over the separate ports, but the same bus to come into OBS or XLS and each run at 1080, then push at least the main stream of 1080 out to upload to YouTube streaming.

8. If I guessed wrong in number 7, then please explain your entire setup; otherwise, if I am right, now think about that with OBS or XLS software? In other words, what you're likely trying to achieve will not work. You are relying on the consumer level hardware to do a professional level job. At the data rates or bandwidth (total) (not just internet connections) you are trying to push is way too much. What you really need is a high-end streaming broadcast system hardware inconjunction with OBS, more or less that means 3 each capture cards that actually all plug into the motherboard. Otherwise, you will always get jitters or better known as dropout or dropped frames. Although, you can change the settings in the OBS or the fps on the GoPro6 cameras to make it better, but that just compresses video rate even more and likely will not fix the dropout.

9. After reading all the above and you still have questions, please post them? Plus, I mean no disrespect to you in the way I ask things, I am just trying to help without knowing you or your skill sets. So, the more you post, the more I or others can try to help. Still, what you're trying to achieve would be high-end setups and you might need an actual tech person to come and check your setup.

Lastly, I am no broadcast tech, but I have done multicam setups at home, like you're trying to do and I've had the same issues or it was the upload speeds that held me back... Uh, lol...that sounds like I want you too hire me or something...no, I didn't mean it that way...lol, I just mean it as I have been there done that. 😀

One more thing, not all of the jitters or dropout are from your side, the people watching can have dropout due to their own hardware. Plus, there is a whole another aspect to this. The videos people are watching might be a recorded version of the live session. So, you did it live on such and such day and time, but you or YouTube recorded it for future playback. Thus, it could be those recorded versions that have dropout...

Looking at that speed readout you posted has 400-500Mbps download and 200-300Mbps upload, but wouldn't those be much higher for a 1Tbps connection? By chance do you know the Optical Carrier (OC) connection number? Just trying to understand your setup better... Also, are you using a router behind the internet connection and if so, what is that routers speed? And, you must be using more then one device on this network right? Based on seeing 192.168.1.5 says to me you have the router at 192.168.1.1 and 4 other devices of 192.168.1.2, 192.168.1.3, 192.168.1.4 and 192.168.1.5.

Therefore, I am seeing all the more of reasons why your live streams might slow down. And, you say you use your ipad on this network, do you use your ipad while live streaming or any other items except the Alienware computer during live streaming? If so, those items are going to slow things down and cause dropout/jitters.

Nico,

Just double checking here, is it possible you meant 1Gbps Google Fiber Connection and then you get a 1TB of storage on the their Cloud Storage or it's a 1TB storage hard drive they provided? I ask because Google only offers the highest of 1Gbps connections. Maybe, you made a typo?

I couldn't get that thought out of my head...a 1Tbps and so I researched it a little bit. After reading some info on google and wiki, the fastest in the world ever is 1.4Tbps. Another thing that I saw, on Google's purchase page, you should be getting 1Gbps Down and 1Gps if that's what you paid for.

Also, here is a help page from them that explains some reasons for slow downs:

https://support.google.com/fiber/answer/2476912?hl=en

Thus, I would ask do you have TV coming in on this same connection? If so, it will cause slow downs.

My friend, i dont know what to say.... all the info you provided actually does make me want to hire you.

Yes, you are right about the MoBo issue since i am using 3 megawell usb capture cards that go into the MoBo.

Why am i not using pci capture cards? Well i actually have 3 of them installed in a pc with rampage extreme 10 anniversary edition MoBo but I ran into an issue that the gopros are not working in obs or xplit. So i went back to the older pc, an alienware. I probably should try inrallung the pci capture cards in the pci slot of alienware.

In terms of the upload speed, that is not an issue. Because i could have 100 devices connected to the same network, but only certain ethernet jacks have the dedicated 1tb/sec download and 750mb upload speed. All my sim pcs are the only ones that have that bandwidth. And is not distributed smong them. Since i have 4 decicated 1tb jacks.

My wifi is limited to 500 mb dl and 300 mb upload. And the speed test i sent to you is from my wifi.

So i will have to do the following:

1. Figure out why my super PC is having triuble detecting the image from the capture cards saying that us used by another app
2- connect the gopris to a sli dlot directly and avoid using the usb in the motherboard.

Thank you for all the time tou are devoting go help me!

I'd expect it too show closer to the 1Gbps...that takes me to the question of dedicated or shared? I understand you're in your own building, but looking at how fiber works, could it be shared with a building next door or something? Just seems odd...maybe do a few speed test, and select different locations on the map; different for each test.

Yes, post your OBS config please, that might help. Still, knowing the entire chain from cameras to internet would help; especially, with model numbers and settings...

1 gb is ONLY for hard wired cat5/6 connections. Wifi is never going to be 1gb. If indo a speedtest from my dim pc, then it will be 1000 mb ul and 1000 mg ul.

When on wifi, i can never get that speed.

But let me ask something, the average streamer has an average internet connection of 20-100 mbps. So weather it is 1000 or 500 actually makes acdifference?

Hey Nico, I think the issue is in the setup of the software you are using to broadcast with. I used to stream on Twitch with a very limited connection. I had to turn stuff down but I still had a pretty good looking video for the connection speed I had. Knowing a little bit about video, I think the issue resides in amount of data you may be trying to push down the pipe. There is no way you are going to be able to broadcast a 4k video. You need to have the broadcast software handle crunching down the video for you.

Nico,

I do agree with Bob and that is why you should post your OBS settings, as they will show what compression is being used and other info. In a basic sense, whenever you do video you only have two ways to really use it and that is RAW or Compressed. RAW is whatever the resolution the camera (or video device) puts out in it's raw format, say 4k for example. However, the files sizes will be enormous at 4k and it takes a high powered computer with high powered video cards to use video in it's RAW state. Therefore, that is where Compression/Decompression (codec) comes in. There are software compressors and hardware compressors in use for just about everything related to transmitting video. With software compressors, which there are many, you can choose the best one for whatever situation you plan to use the video, in your case multi-camera streaming. As for hardware compression, that is an actual physical device that might do a compression factor in order to store the video or use it. Here is good link to read (might be outdated in regards to current software and hardware codecs):

https://www.dacast.com/blog/software-vs-hardware-encoders-for-live-video-streams/ (https://www.dacast.com/blog/software-vs-hardware-encoders-for-live-video-streams/)

So, in your case you are using the OBS software codec with your Alienware computer...which could be the reason for the slowdown or it can be a different factor. That is what I meant about knowing the entire chain from camera to the internet and you likely know this already. However, one of these items in your chain is causing the problem for the jitters/drops. That is why I also mentioned using a hardware codec device earlier, because a hardware codec device removes some of the potential problems that exist with software codecs.

Anyway, moving onto your questions. You are talking a few different things all at once. First, the speedtest you did/do is not measuring speed from your computer or wifi device, it is usually only measuring your internet connection device (usually some sort of box) speed and in your case the 1Gbps from Google. You can use any computer on your network (hardwired or wifi), which is behind the internet connection device to start the test and see the speeds shown from that test, usually the same or close to it each time you ran a test. BUT, with a speedtest it can vary based on where you connect to (on the speedtest map) for the test. In other words, when using the speedtest.net let's say I select a place in my home state for the test; well, that should be pretty fast (normally) so that means I am getting closer to the speeds that I pay my internet company (or ISP) for. However, if I connect to a place on the other side of the world, it's likely going to show a much slower speed (ignoring time of day when the test is done, which means if I do it at nighttime vs daytime, nighttime less people connected or called less traffic). Also, this is the reason why ISP's say up to this or that speed because they know speeds can vary based on those factors and many others.
Now, when you mention Cat5/5e or Cat6/6A that is nothing more then a cable type and the throughput speed. Meaning how the cable is made and its designed speed rate, here read this:

***Cat 5e has been around for over 15 years. At the time it came out, it gave the first glimpse of the 1 Gigabit networks as a possibility, although it was not typical to find hardware reasonably priced that would support those speeds. In the past few years, hardware costs have come down and allowed Gigabit networking to become easier to afford. From our perspective, the absolute minimum network should be a Gigabit network. Cat 5e cables are typically 24 gauge twisted pair wires, which can produce a Gigibit network at distances up to 328 ft., including patch cables at both ends.

Cat 6 cables came out only a few years after Cat 5e. This cable gave the ability to have a 10 Gigabit network. For much of the 2000's, Cat 5e was run to the workstations and Cat 6 was run as a backbone from router to switches. However, the 10 Gigabit network on Cat 6 cables is limited to 164 ft., including patch cables. After that distance, its ultimate speed is the same as cat 5e, i.e. 1 Gigabit.

Beyond the speed/distance factor, Cat 6 has a tighter twist in the cables, which allows for two-way communication on each pair of wires, where Cat 5e does not allow this feature. We have noticed that in certifying our cable installations, Cat 5e cable has a tendency to have a higher delay and skew than Cat 6 cable. That means that even though both Cat5e and Cat 6 can do 1 Gigabit networks, Cat 5e may have a longer delay for the signal to get from one side to the other, which will give the appearance that it runs slower.***

Did that help you understand the Cat5 or Cat6 question?

If so, I will move onto the average streamer question. I take it you mean this; "My average streaming video session is averaging 20-100Mbps, so if I have an 1Gbps internet connection or even a 500Mbps connection, shouldn't my streaming session be just fine, with no jitters, dropouts or stuttering?" The answer, if all things being equal, is yes, but that's the whole problem, all things are not equal. Most people do not see it that way, yet that is how it works; instead, you must look at the entire chain or big picture...the camera to internet, live vs recorded, ISP connection speeds, software codec vs hardware codec, network interface cards, CAT5 or CAT6 cables, routers, streaming software in use, and even the time of day, as well as how many people are viewing it all at once on the other end. More or less, it's all variables that you may have control over or you may not.

Therefore, set everything up to best as possible and go with that... Even big companies deal with these very issues. What was that big boxing match (McGregor vs ?) that went on recently and they had to delay the start time due to streaming issues, like too many connections at once or ISP's not connected properly. I know this doesn't help fix things for you, but I am just saying do expect problems with streaming video...

Last question, is your NIC card in your Alienware an 1Gbps card and is your router 1Gbps capable? If not, they should be...

John, you know your stuff. And are more than willing to help. Please know that i never take this for granted and i do appreciate it.

I have some honework to donto get you all these info, but my sim is currently dismantled as im installing the active control loading in the flight controld.

Also, i have each gopro set up as 1080p @ 60 fps and my output resolution is set to 1080p as well.

I will come back soon with the data.

Thanks again!
Nico

Thank you Nico, but admittingly, it's this website that I/we owe. If you want too say thank you in a big way, give a donation to the website/Trevor Hale by using the button/link over on the left bottom side of the page, see my pic. It will help Trevor with server costs and keeping the site going. And, I know he will never ask this, he's to modest and humble, so I will ask for him. Just to let you know, I am only a member and receive no money or anything else in that regard from him or Bob Reed...

Regarding your current situations, no hurry at all, you just let me know things as you get too them... I do have one recommendation for now, drop the GoPro Cameras to 1080 30fps or even 24fps (24fps is useable, but you need to try it first). Otherwise, using 60fps is to high for streaming...

Just an update on the streaming issue.

I purchase a magewell dusl hd i capture card and i have 2 go pro 6 connected to it at 1080p 60 fps. And for the motion platform ca era, i have 1 go pro 6 connected to magewell usb capture card same settings 10980/60.

You guys were spot on, it is much much better now. After freeing up the usb 3.0 and using the captire card in a pci slot.... stream is great.

Which brings me back to my other point, why have i not been streaming?  Well, my dual yokes arrived with a faulty aileron hall effect sensor which has been driving me absolutely bananas. The fact that i have my sim sitting idle because of a 2 usd part breaks my heart.

The issue is that i bought in amazon every type of hall sensir and half came today the other half comes tomorrow. All of today;s were the incorrect one.

Here's some pics of my simpit.  It started in 2009 as an Akers-Barnes pit.

Then in 2013 a friend from work, who is also into flight simming, brought in an Arduino board and an idea on building a com/nav radio. So I followed his lead and built one at the same time.

That was the start of trying to remove the keyboard and mouse from the simpit...

After finishing the radio setup I started thinking of other functions I could get the Arduino to do. The next project was building a landing gear and tail hook lever.

My pit sat that way for about 2 years until I finally decided to start building a Tomcat pit.

I enlarged some images that I had of the F-14 cockpit layout and used them as plans.

I use a 23" monitor to behind the panel to display the gauges using the Air Manager software by Sim Innovations.  I had to build all the gauges except the VDI and HSD.  The VDI and HSD are exported from the Aerosoft F-14X and displayed on two 7" Lilliput monitors.

I've added a glare shield since then.  I need to finish labeling the vertical panels and then I plan to build the right and left side panels.

Single projector 12 feet wide is good enough for immersion (ie: the airplane banks not the horizon)
180 is wonderful but not mandatory for my style of flying.

Sim is enclosed (limited dust)
