Title: The Beech 99 to KA350i Project!
Post by: Trevor Hale on March 08, 2011, 10:32:23 AM

Hey Gents.

So I have been pretty quiet on the SIM Front, but I finally got confirmation on this aircraft.  Below you will see pictures of my new Project.  I know how much work it is going to be, especially since the deal with this aircraft is that I have to take the entire thing.   :o

Girlfriend thinks I am nuts!  and really I can't say as I blame her, sometimes I feel like I am crazy mad.

Most of the pictures are from the aircraft (Which has been sealed with duct tape and plastic)

I haven't seen inside yet, but from what I am told everything is in tact except for the Avionics.  All panels and CB's are supposed to be there and of course the lower panels, TQ, and Gear Handle should also be in excellent condition.

The cockpit picture is for reference only, I am not 100% Sure what config the existing MIP is in, but I will be using it for a template to convert the MIP to something more Modern.  (Honeywell, or similar Glass) Or something like the Super King air Proline-21

Anyway, Just wanted to share with you all, my new Excitement.  I will be going to pick up the aircraft in the spring..  Only about another month and a half away. (I hope)

HERE ARE THE SPECS
N38AK  1974 Beech 99 Serial # U-158 (Use to have PT6A-28 Engines.)

Mode S Code: 51054373
Certification Issued: 1986-03-07
Air Worthiness test: 1974-10-04

LOL, Yes I am still up North.  The Aircraft is at YPQ, so not too far from Pete at all.  if he would want to join me on the disassemble weekend, he is more then welcome to help himself to anything I won't need.

he will just have to help LOL

I am hoping the passenger seating is there still, and in good shape.  I am thinking about keeping 2 rows back.  (this thing was configured for 14 seats) so who knows, but I know the cockpit seats are there. (So I am told)

I have to arrange a (visit) to go inside and confirm everything I want is there)  My brother took these pictures yesterday for me, but like most pilots didn't want to get dirty climbing inside.

You bought a Beech 99, that's so cool!

When you're done, stack boxes behind you and only fly at night to simulate the life of a Freight Dog :)

Can I have your overhead now? :)

Ok, sounds like fun.  I will have to try that, and for even more excitement, I can do poor maintenance on it and watch what happens when things quit working :)

Hilarious.  I was watching videos last night.  apparently they are widely used for parachuting as well.

You can get some tips from the guys at jetcareers.com in the Freight Dog forum.  A lot of them in use with the overnight haulers.....anything from car parts, to boxes to urine samples :)  Hope your's never hauled the later :)

Can't wait to see this one come together, gonna be awesome!

I will keep everyone posted for sure, but I have to wait for spring before I can dig it out!

I agree Scott, Not sure what route I am going to go.  I have even thought about taking Rob Archers methods and modifying real instruments.  (more work I know)  First thing will be first, and thats stripping it and cleaning it as best I can.  Then I will go from there.

Sorry if I misspelled your name Rob.

We all know that cleaning an old bird is much more challenging than building from scratch.
But...so exciting!

BTW how did you find that bird ?

It is way more fun in the long run I think.  But mainly because my technical building skills are not what most of your guys is.  (ie your throttle)

But for me to get something like this with a real history behind it, I will really enjoy putting it back together.

I met with my brothers Boss and showed him my 737.  he loved it, and I had mentioned wanting to do a twin.  He told me he knew of a couple and would let me know what it would take to get one.  I didn't have high hopes, but it sure worked out well.

A special thanks to all those involved in making this happen as well!

Jack, I never thought about turning the GAIFR Screens sideways, what a great Idea.  I knew I would need FI for the engine stack, (Here's hoping Mark at FI, can help make that happen) but what a neat idea.

PS I will tell her as well :)

HOLY COW!!!!  :o I just saw this post. Are you going to be able to fit the whole thing in your master bedroom like Jack does? If yes, girlfriend will really be impressed I'm sure by the size of it. Let's hope other parts don't disappoint her by comparison  ;D

I would like to say I envy you, but no way do I envy you. My back is hurting just looking at it. I will only envy you once you have it completed and then I will wish you had moved to Gravenhurst  :)

LOL Mau, Yes..  I don't know how you knew that, but it will fit in my Master Bedroom.  The only issue is there will no longer be room for the Girlfriend in there, so I am sure she will find the couch comfortable..  ( 8) ) <-- if she asks if I wrote this, I will totally deny it!

Anyway, reiterating what you had said, I assure you that she will not be surprised or disappointed with my overcompensation.  (She is just used to it) ROFL.

I assure you my back will not hurt initially, for after I get the important part off, a Loader/Backhoe will make short work of the rest. But the grinding, sanding, painting, and sanding, and painting, and sanding, and painting....... etc  may make my back hurt a bit.  (but I haven't told you yet) you are invited to a "Paint the sim party" BYOB = Bring your own BRUSHES LOL.

I am sure you will all see the pain I will go through, and all the swearing I will partake in, but I hope it will be worth it.

Your probably right though, Maybe I should have moved to Gravenhurst, the haulage to take it 4 more hours north might break my bank..

Thanks for your kind words though LOL

I would offer to park it in my place for the next 20 years or so (to save you some moving costs), but my wife may start comparing sizes and I will be in big trouble. So, sorry, but you're on your own there.  :)

Shame though, I am sure you have somewhere nice and warm in the winter to store it so that it could be worked on with eaze.

Trevor,

Congratulations on your new project!

Great to see a prop(er) sim (not another 737  ;)) and another old bird that'll get a second life. Not sure that I agree with the statement "I know how much work it is going to be" - my experience is it's a never ending sequence of mystery each time you open up a new part of the aircraft  :)

If you've got any engineering or maintenance manuals for the B99 do some planning before you get to the point of cutting, decisions over where and how you chop control lines for example can make life a lot easier or harder when it comes to turning the beast into a sim. And if there's any paperwork with the airframe grab it, like you say the fact there's history behind that lump of metal means a lot.

Looking forward to seeing this progress.

Cheers
Jon

Jon,

Thanks for the kind words.  I have to agree with you on the paperwork.  As far as I know, I will get the COA, logs and assorted manuals with the aircraft, as if I bought it to fly it.  As for the cutting thing, I am not an engineer, nor am I an AME.  I was actually pondering this last night.  Don't quote me on this, but I think the aircraft baing as old as it is and still small enough that it will have cables to all the control surfaces rather then hydraulics. (although I could be wrong, and In a way the hydraulics would be easier to deal with)  The big thing that I am hoping is that the control yokes and rudder pedles themselves are linked under the floor and behind the mip.  Crossing my fingers when I cut through the fuse, and through the control cables maybe the control linkages will still remain in tact.

I know where I want to cut the Nose off (hard because of the nose gear bay), I am just not quite sure how far back I will go (as Jack suggested a couple rows of seats might be neat) if they are still inside.

I will ask their maintenance guy (who is rebuilding one of these for flight) where he suggests it be cut.  I am not going to just "Wing it" Sorry for the pun.

Any suggestions or help would be appreciated.

Trev

As long as you are talking about making airplane noises and since everybody is looking for the perfect sound files, here you have an opportunity to make real airplane noises in your bedroom. Just attach a couple of propellers to the engines and fire these babies up. Guaranteed to eliminate the need for vibrators in the bedroom ;D

Now... that's a way to get your girlfriend off (& flying) and stop saying that you are crazy. And you could join the mile high club while still on the ground. I don't know but I do think it's a great idea.

Awsome project Trevor, Looking fwd to seeing it. The best cut would probably be right in front of the main frame. Its the step towards the front . Still room for a row of seats behind the cockpit seats if you cut it their. The flight control cables are in the floor and the servos are just behind the main frame in the floor but you dont need that for the sim unless you want to see the ailerons move on autopilot. The maintenance guy there will be able to fill you in. If at any time you get stuck dont hesitate to PM me. I think you will be surprised at how easily it will be to clean that thing out but valve grind compund in screw heads will be a must with this bird. Also look for a product called mouse milk. That stuff in awsome.  The easiest part of aircraft overhaul is actually tearing the stuff out.

Post by: Trevor Hale on March 10, 2011, 12:28:49 PM
Wow Gary thats is great information.  I do not think I will need the servo's But it is a good thought lol.  Perhaps you could take on of the pictures I have posted and edit it with an arrow where you were thinking.  I will post my edit on this post and show you where I was thinking.

Your help will be appreciated, but I must say I am not familer with your comment "valve grind compund in screw heads will be a must with this bird"

what did you mean by this?

I would cut open a door for entering the sim on the side and keep one window behind to make room for a row of club seats!!!

LOL thats awsome jack.

Using valve grind compund is an old trick used to remove screws without stripping the heads. The grit of the compound really lets you get some bite into the screw and plenty of torque behind the scewdriver without stripping the head. Works great on partially striped heads as well. Any aircraft that sits outside for any period of time tends to seize up. The place where I worked when I first moved to Canada used to every now and then buy scrapped airframes for spare parts, so Ive spent a fair bit of time doing exactly what your about to embark on.

Were you have your lines would be the perfect place to cut if you decide you dont want any extra seating. The main frame is around the 3rd window so aywhere fwd of that would be perfect.

Gary

Fantastic (and very ambitious) project Trev, good on you.  Those yokes, rudders and particularly throttles would be worth a fortune.  Bob's gonna hate you

As for avionics, remember Ruscool for some of your guages and switch panels due to the similarity with the B200/350.

Looking forward to seeing the progress on this build.

Gary this information is very valuable.  I will take your advice and see if I can find this stuff, as well as the other stuff you mentioned which I am guessing is better then wd-40 for loosening corroded screws.

This will be frustrating at times but I am sure it will be a learning experience and can be lots of fun.

Leaving tonight to go make a final decision on the aircraft..  As I just found out, I also get to choose form this one as well.  (I really don't care about the condition of the paint, or the exterior...) The interior is most important to me.

I only get one, so I must choose wisely.

LOL.. hilarious..  Well actually, until I figure out how to post my 2 short videos, you guys will just have to wait.  But I will tease you with this much.  I am still going through with the project.. but after seeing the aircraft, it needs a lot of work, and we are trying to locate some missing peices.  ie. (Left yoke, Left rudder Peddles, and Left Seat) ROFL.

Things are in a challanging state, but I think we can make it work.

(Videos to follow, as soon as I figure them out)

PS. (Was so excited to see everything only took like 1 minute of video, no pictures and was inside the cockpit for 20 minutes) I guess I was just a little excited.

More soon.

Oh, in that case, just ask any 5 year old kid down the street. They should be able to help.

On another note, that is one hell of a big matzo ball of a project based on the condition of the interior. Whoever ripped the inside apart like that should be sent to the gallows and I'll volunteer to trigger the trap door :D

thats the same as our Ebay Mod, but that mod only allows you to post the videos using the video number.  Also, its for RC3 we are using RC4..  But thanks for checking.

Still doesn't allow me to upload my video to youtube yet LOL.  I will figure it out.

Yes, the aircraft has been torn to $hit.  But I am sure I can put it back together.  Least the parts I want..

Anyway, we will see how it goes.

Hey Trev

One thing that comes to mind is, dont allow yourself to be pressured into going forward with this project unless you are getting that frame/components for very cheap. I think that in the long run, it may actually be easier to just purchase turbo prop panels and components than put the effort into what will be required for this project considering the condition it's in. However, if you do decide that it is what you want, then I know you will over come it and come out on top. Put it this way- I was very excited for you until I saw the inside. Then I was dissapointed for you once the condition was revealed. :-\ .

LOL, Eric Thanks!  I agree that caution must be observed with the condition of the aircraft..  I do realize the work that will need to go into this. I can get a fully together beech 99 for around $500,000.00 LOL

Let me clear the air here.

I am not paying $0.01 for this aircraft, and I have someone to haul away the parts of the aircraft that i don't want to the scrapper for again not $0.01

Any of the spare parts that I don't use (Switches, Wemac Eyeball vents, etc) that I may sell, will allow me some fluff money to replace the gear handle and various other important panels.

If any of you remember my Falcon 900EX that I built.  I made all those panels myself, and I might just do it again, especially because I have the real ones to get the measurements from now.

All this thing is going to cost me is the gas to go pick it up, and the time involved in cutting her up.

Hopefully that makes people feel better :)

Its a fair point Eric brought up, so easy to let the giddy feelings run away with you, but for free you cant complain :)

Its sort of the same scenario with my sim, i got my 75 nose for next to nothing, but as far as nose ends go its not the best in the world, it was sat on the aircraft for 4 years in a field uncovered, then removed and stored nose up uncovered again for another 2 years before the original owner got hold of it, there are no yokes or TQ with or MIP (i have all ready) and parts of it have been going walkies over the years so not much left, however it has all the things that i cant/be bothered with making myself, dzus rails, linings tillers landing gear glare all the structual stuff and what is missing can be found very easy for the 757.

Only outstanding issue is moving it from its current home 300 miles north to its new home, obviously its a large lump and the quotes i have got for moving it take the piss somewhat, 2000gbp, yeah dream on! but the fuel costs for the journey is not cheap either and the regulations for moving it on the roads over here are a nightmare, but i have a cunning plan, actually i dont, be honest i dont have a clue, large trailor at the stroke of midnight is what im thinking :)

But, no matter how you look at it building a sim is a lot of work, retrofitting a dead plane or buying a kit no matter what its a lot of work, but is that not part of the fun, best thing is get her home, strip it bare, sandblast it, jet wash it, TNT it until sparkling then re build 1 piece at a time, thats my plan anyway.

But seriously Trev, hats off to you, this is going to be an interesting journey for you, cant wait to see how you get on, in fact, put a webcam up so we all can watch!!

But mostly, and i think i speak for all of us here, glad to see you back!!

I couldn't agree more.  even when I first saw it, I thought this sucks..  There is no way I can do this. but after watching my videos over and over again. really, it isn't that bad.

Like somone once said in here before..  I have been building (Building) sims for almost 12 years..  I have had 4 and am on my 5th.  I have built things myself and had no issues.  So if I am in need of using the real throttle quad, as the exterior shell of something I build...  why not.  Or if I need to recover the glareshield (which I have) but has a few tears in it why not.

I like at (Michael carter) Boeing Skunk works.  He had far less to work with then what I am getting and look at the amazing job he has done.

I mean really..  I am only using this shell for the "Nostalgia" or the base to add to my build.  (saves me buying one from FDS or Building another wood one)  All the interior liners can be fixed, and I can make my own panels to fit over the broken ones.

Even the MIP, is ther and can be used as a template to cut out a new one in MDF for G1000 or Glass instruments.

But Eric and Phil have a valid point. Don't waste a ton of money on someone elses junk.    What frosts me, is some guys will get given something like this for free, then sell the parts at the outragous prices on ebay that we have all seen before.

Eric, Your a smart man, and thanks for getting me to "Check Myself"

Quote

large trailor at the stroke of midnight is what im thinking :)

I'd be doing the same thing.  Better to beg for forgiveness then ask for permission, besides..  chances are the cop that might stop you will be interested in checking it out, when you offer him a free ride when it is done LOL.

Most people get excited when they prepare a room for the arrival of their upcoming newborn. So why shouldn't you?  ;D. But then again, these newborns have the lousy habit of turning into bratty teenagers and I'm sure your Beech 99 will follow in their path as well and drive you to tears.

You have one big advantage though...you can always put it up for sale or throw it the dump...not quite as easy with teenagers  ;D

It always gives me mixed emotions when I see pictures like those. Happy for you as you are getting a cockpit and yet sad to see an aeroplane in such a state.

Will you be doing a history lookup for it?... If I got a cockpit looking like that I would be digging into the history to see where it has been in its life (and where it was made etc). Do you have the logbook for it?

Congrats again... Mucho green with envy here. Has to be the best price ever. Looking forward to see the progress Trev.

Neo, the life I have given this airplane is way better then the life it had sitting in a desolite field filled with Bird nests and rotting away.  It has been sitting to rot away since 1984, when its last flight brought it from the USA to The Airport I collected it from.  Everyone knows it will be much happier in its new home.

I have already done this and am totally aware of its history.  Some of which was posted in the first post of the thread.  I even secured the manufactures number plare with all the information on it which will be framed next to the picture of her still in a flying state and a picture of the way she will be when completed as a simulator.  The fact is, I am giving the history a chance to keep going, not just ending up in a scrap yard and turned into pop / soda cans if it was lucky.

But thanks for being so happy for me, but trust me.  I am a very happy guy right now..  :)

It's a shame you couldn't have kept the nose... Would have been great to store the PCs and it would have been good looking out the front and seeing the actual plane. Problem is it is soooooooooooooooooooo damned LONNNNNNNNNNNNNNNG. I don't think I've seen a small plane with such a long nose.

Thanks guys. I am so supe excited. Now I know how the other guys with real cockpits feel. It's a feelin like you just can't describe. They way everything feels is just so indescribable. It is almost like you can hear the stories or voices of people that have ridden in the airplane. One funny thing is the pilots ashtray has cigarette butts in it. The last flight was 26 years ago and the butts are still in there. Almost preserved.

Everything looked very rough but already I have located the missing rudder peddles, seats and yoke. I am already peicing and labeling everything for reassembly after the gutting.

The only thing I thing I am really missing is a couple of connecting rods from the pilots peddles to the bellcrank in the floor. Even the peddles have the adjustments on them.

Also for anyone who may be interested. I will have quite a few wemac eyeball vents complete with a wemac eyeball light in a single housing.

I could make air fresheners to hang from the overhead, shaped like little airplanes lol. We can call it old plane smell and you guys could sell it with every new DSTD. If you search "seat"  in ebaymotors aviation parts, those seat tracks pop up every now and then. You may be able to contact one of those resellers as well to help source the correct seat tracks.

Do you have the seats as well?

After 8 Hours.....  This is what was left.  Still loads of cable..

[smg id=178]
Left side Clean

[smg id=179]
Right Side Clean.  All the mouse poop is gone, and the insulation removed. This had to be the worst part.

The Finished Product.  Obviously the remaining interior needs to come out, but going to work on the Paint and panel Next.  This is how the cockpit looked before I removed the TQ.

[smg id=175]
The CB Panel, Before removal.  Needs some TLC, and gonna try to find a way to get the chalkiness out of the Lightplate.

[smg id=176]
The Gear Lever...  Man is this thing ever hard to operate one handed with the safety latch.  I guess thats the point, but I can't picture letting go of the Yoke to use both hands on the lever.  LOL I am going to order a new lighted knob from Russcool, and Going to fit 3 new LED's above (Obviously)

Scott, it takes a lot of time, but it is coming along.  One of the biggest challanges I face is trying to get myself to just slow down.  I so bad want to start putting it back together, before I forget how to put it back together LOL.  And I want to get it flying again.  But I know I want to paint it and make it spiffy LOL.

It's not an easy task when it calls your name.  Additionally working out of town 4 days a week makes it challanging as well LOL.

I think the challenge is going to be the mip and the monitors behind it. Cause there isn't a lot of room there. The interfaces will arrive soon and then I can start adding my own wiring.

Hi guys, not a lot of progress this weekend however I did get some little things done that just seemed to take forever. I have managed to fix the slop in the captians rudder pedals and connect the potentiometer. Additionally I have added the pot for the ailerons and elevators. I had to install springs on the yokes to prevent uncommanded nosedives when visiting the Lou and have installed stops on the elevators to prevent the busting of items in the mip. It's amazing how much the cables limited the travel of the yokes.

I have started painting the throttle as well but will save those pictures for later in the week when I get back home.

Off for another week of business away from home.

Catch you all later.

(Pictures don't do it Justice, and I know there is lots of work to do. (Starting with new leather on the Glare) But..... It breathes again! That's right the Beech 99 although has Boeing glass installed is again fly able. I have been working hard over the past two weekends to dust off the bird.

Built a new mip to accommodate a proline 21 look and feel. I am sure it isn't accurate for most but for me is a movement in the right direction.

I am working on the lower switches now and soon will be adding another avionics bay behind the tq for the fmc.

I am evaluating proline 21 software and will soon make a decision on the software package.

Also got rid of the projector and am using 3 19" monitors for the front view. Hope one day to replace these with larger 27 or 32" screens.

Just though I would share my excitement with all of you.

NOTE: Also Looking for some new Sheepskin seat covers LOL

Trevor,

I don't know how I have missed seeing your project until tonight. I was a co pilot on a Beech 99 back in 1979 and have over 1,000 in the right seat. So I was very interested to see a project of the 99. I looked at your first post and saw the pictures of your aircraft and about fell out of my chair. The aircraft you bought was one of three Beech 99 aircraft that were operated by Air Kentucky Airlines in Owensboro Kentucky. The reason I know is that I flew for them in 1979 and 1980. I loved the time I flew that aircraft. Our flights were based in Owensboro and we serviced Nashville, Tennessee, Paducah, Louisville and Owensboro Kentucky. After I left they became and Allegheny commuter before they eventually went bankrupt. I have sent you a picture of what the paint scheme looked like before they became an Allegheny commuter. Also your aircraft has 2/3 chance that it was one of two separate incidents where 2 of the 3 aircraft landed gear up. The baggage compartment on the belly of the aircraft can take a lot of abuse. Best of luck to you.

This is just fantastic information.  I was hoping some day I would run into someone that would remember flying this aircraft.  With any luck someone can find N38AK in their logbook and I would actually get to see the entry.

I just want to bring it back to it's glory, As I said in my email she looks like she had a rough life, but I will bring it back to its former Glory.  What I found most interesting is as I go about running cables and controls, I find things like cigarette butts and newspaper clippings.  I even found some old "Flying Magazines" stuffed under the seat foam.  Its a neat feeling going over the aircraft, and sometimes when I sit in it, I can almost hear the voices and stories.  I know that sounds a little looney but, its pretty awesome.

Its not easy to get that aircraft smell into a wooden shell :)

Thanks for everything.

Fantastic,

Your not Hijacking it.  I want people to join in.  Its my project thread, so its all good.

Unfortunately there were some birds living in the plane before I got to it, so there is some other smells, but the hydraulic fluid, and fuel are a major scent.  Not enough to be harmful or distracting, just enough to add to the experience.

If I could only find a way to bottle it LOL.

Hi Trevor,

Just catching up on your build. . looking good!  Had to smile when I read the story of your Beech being based at one point  in my home state of Kentucky. Nice finding out about the history!  I don't have the complete airframe like you but I have most of the interior out of a Lear 45 that crashed in Telluride . . so far I have collected some photos of the aircraft prior to the crash and a few crash photos along with the NTSB report.  Fortunately both pilots survived. Once the sim is complete I plan on framing this information for visitors to see.  Its last flight was from Phoenix AZ to Telluride . . it crashed on landing.  So for the first official "cross country" flight of my sim . . I plan on flying from Phoenix to Telluride.   ;D

Hi Shane,  That's the fun of it.  The history of these actual flight decks are very important.  I am glad that nobody passed away in the crash of your interior. That should mean good luck for your flights.

On a second note,  Can anyone tell me what the heck this button is?  I have searched and can't seem to identify it, and the part numbers on it don't turn up any searches. I was thinking it was an AML switch but it is more rectangle then it is Square.

Looking for help to identify it so I can replace it before I cover the Glare with the new Cloth.

Well I actually have the one, I am looking for the replacement for the other side :)  The space next to it is some sort of "Speed Control" gauge that mode B99's had them removed.  No idea what it was supposed to do. but when I recover I will go right over it.

Just the warning Annunciator I am trying to get for the FO side.

All of the bulbs are blown and they are wired directly to the circuit board. I was thinking about replacing them with tiny leds. Would not be able to use the built in circuit would have to create your own. But as I recall it was doable.

Great choice there, just seen some Dash 8 panels and a GNS530 done by them, simply
stunning. A very talented family business.

Did you get the lightplates with them? It's a bit more, but SO easy to connect and get working!! Sure beats soldering up dozens of LEDs and resistors...

Hi guys, just another pit update. This weekend saw a lot of work with my fuel panel and OMI beacon lights. As well as the new RP48 panel for the autopilot.

The bird flies amazingly.

Just as a documented note: in Windows7 project magenta flight plan may flicker on and off. This is due to the windows indexing service. If you click on the flightsim drive and goto properties you can uncheck the indexing service. This corrects that issue.

No Problem Warren, I like to share my progress:

For instance, I learned the following last night as it wasn't a good night.

1. On my output card - Turn the voltage down by going CLOCKWISE to lower the voltage as it was a tad high and wanted to turn it down.
(I turned it Counterclockwise and blew up every LED in the SIM)

2. Outside view monitors don't like to be left on.
(I left them on so they wouldn't freeze and one blew up last night)

3. When working on your landing gear handle, lay down a mat or something to prevent stuff from falling down in the bellows of the airplane where even a 2 year old can't get their hand.
(I didn't lay down a mat, and now have to try to figure out how to locate something I can't see, nor get my hand in to get it back)

Then I went inside and had another beer while thinking I would have been better off staying inside to begin with.

Nice progress Trev . . .  I would love to build a King Air at some point.  Better get this Lear finished first . .  ;D   Using real parts can create unique problems . . I bet using a real airframe does the same!  But I love the feel of real!

Post by: Trevor Hale on February 25, 2015, 05:44:59 AM
I can't agree with you more Shane.  Using real parts has just such a different feel to it regardless.  The Real Airfram has had many challenges..  But most of these I have been able to overcome.

I am hoping to receive my lower panels this week, so I can get them changed out.  The Lower Overhead and Annunciators just showed up yesterday and I think I will be very busy getting them all wired and the servos put into the gauges.

Lots of work, I just wish I didn't have to be at work, so I could have the time to work on the stuff LOL.

Title: Re: The Beech 99 to KA350i Project!
Post by: jackpilot on March 02, 2015, 07:15:01 AM
It is always wise to run extra cables containing a dozen or two of color coded wires. On the sides and from the overhead, just in case.
Even if they are never used, the investment is minimal and could save a lot of downtime. Also some access panels here and there can save the day.

Well,

Its Been a while since I posted any updates.  The last couple months I have been busy tearing everything apart.  When I say everything I mean I had to disconnect the sim so I could better insulate the Hanger.  Thats the problem with living up in Nanook..  Its COLD, and I Hate the COLD.  so anyway, I have completely re-insulated the hanger, and in order to do that I have to push the airplane around and around and around.  After finally getting it back into place and getting it hooked back up I have decided that it is time to refinish the interior.  I need to do this so I can get the flooring and carpet done.

Needless to say, When I first got the aircraft I had spent a lot of time cleaning her out, but never completely finished..  Unfortunately when cleaning her out the rest of the way there was lots of 30 year old dust and mouse poop.  Glad its finally clean, and I will start refinishing the interior this Friday Night.

Just so there is a record here of the before and afters, I will attach my progress thus far.

Thanks for listening,

Trev

Michael. Yes U-158. when I got it it had allegheny colours.  I am told it use to be Bar-harbor Air's

There isn't much left of the wiring. But lots of spare parts under the floor still if you need some. Ha ha ha.

Pretty cool knowing someone who may have been working on my plane at one time.

Right behind the main spar in the center of the floor theres a few hoses with a distributor valve, thats for the de-ice system. And right behind that theres a little motor with 4 cable drives that come out of it.  I would be intrested in the motor and the pressure switch on the de-ice system.

Or if you want, take a picture/s of things that are under there. I can pass it on to my parts dept and they might buy a few things off of you if its needed. As Ive been told we have the largest Beech 99 inventory in the USA.

I am going to have to say that I think what your after may already have been pillaged. There is a bunch of hydraulic lines disconnected with all the blue connectors off of what looked like were valves at one time.

The pics show lots of dirt. But there is still lots of stuff in here. Looks mostly electrical though.

I am sure they would just have to be sent somewhere to have them tested and recertified. This stuff is so rare. The cost to decertify is better then not having them at all.

LOL Jack,

You will see the progress after this weekend.  I hope to have at least one side of the passenger compartment completed by the end of day Saturday and possibly start the other side Sunday.

Its not a quick process thats for darn sure, and anyone making the decision to go down this path needs to be prepared to make some concessions.  For instance, Looking at passenger seats, unless you want to spend $400.00 per seat for Mutilated ones on ebay, I will be building my own.

Real aircraft parts on ebay, are just way overpriced.  You would think the sellers would get tired of relisting items over and over again.  Apparently not LOL.

Thats awesome...  U-159 would have been the next one off the production line.   That's really cool.  You would probably be pretty sad to see her all cut up, but to be honest she will likely live longer as a sim then she would have sitting on the edge of a field somewhere stripped down to nothing.

You may also consider  some rubberish material like I did. (Costco/Home depot/Wallmart etc)

Awesome. Well I went with old faithful. I have been using this rug for years without issues with static. I wanted to keep with the cozy theme. Seen as everything else is color matched.

Still need some kind of trim near the rug so it doesn't curl but for now it's awesome as I don't want to glue or stick it down in case I need under the floor to replace stuff.

As we speak my wonderful wife is recovering my seat cushions for the front and passenger seats.

If you still have the clear "wheel" part even if its cracked i would personally buy from you for my man cave.

From my e-mail each wind screen to get in really really good condition is right around 15-20k, just because of the heating element embedded in it....just a fyi, its gold.

New (to me) MCP and Efis (installed in the Pedestal.)

She is coming along. But still lots of work.

Need to get Franck to build me a bezel for my ISIS and Radio Panel and of course a new (Black) overhead panel.

Yes, I just got it.

It is supposed to look like the attached picture, but until recently I only used a GoFLight unit.  This unit will be a little better for now until I can do something closer to the real thing..

Hi guys,

Ben along time since I added to this thread, but fr most of you that follow my Streams it isn't new to you, however for those of you that don't I am in the middle of another rebuild.

The aircraft is stripped and am rebuilding it live on stream (as much as I can) Looking to have her flying again in a couple weeks.

Replacing all the interfaces and trying to improve the "Look" to the real aircraft.  Also adding some new features to make the streaming more entertaining.

Yes a really big overhaul.  Replacing all cabling, Interfaces - MIP and adding a lot more simulation functionality.

The Cabin adds to the realism for sure, just wish I had more people to fill it :)

Wish I could be there to help!

When you paint the MIP, be sure to use satin or flat texture paint. (Preferably satin) Satin I think gives the best texture without being too shiny.

My favorites are:
Rustoleum Satin Granite
Rustoleum Satin Shell White
Rustoluem Matte' French Cream (Slightly Darker than Shell White)

Typically you won't need a base primer coat, unless you want the surface super-smooth.

I have the French cream color currently and will stick with it because I have a genuine Center MIP Radio section that is the same color.

If I didn't have that I'd go back to the granite color because it's bad-ass.

It's okay Jack,

I've got a spare harness from my Granddaughters pram, and because I flew gliders I've got a parachute as well... I've watched some of his streams!!!  :o  8)  ;D

LOL you guys are funny.  Joe, would love to have you fly with me.

Ray I also wish you could be here to help.  We are making great progress though.  I went with a Grey (Proline 21 is black instruments) on Grey, and I did this time go FLAT (Satin) No more shiny crap.

Switch Panels are back in, Monitors will be attached to the MIP today, and Hopefully all the Pots will be wired in gain today.  (Might even start coding)

So I took the Plunge this past weekend, and Haven't posted any updates in a while, but thought I would share this with you guys.

Got rid of the BIG TV and side monitors. and went with this...

What a difference.  It's not quite as clear, but is pretty awesome for the immersion feeling.

Jack

I used 2 - 4 X 8 foot sheet of MDF 1/2 " and made the radius 4' and drew an arc. Then shortened the string by 3.5" for the 2X4 frame and drew the arc again.

technically it's 7' 5" which may not be big enough for the 738 but could be slightly modified to fit your uses.

Hey Trevor,

Just finding this thread on your KA350i build.  I haven't had a chance to go through it, but I'm going to spend the evening catching up. I have been trying to sort out how to run either a G3000 set on screens or go the more Steam Gauge route to keep load on my computer(s) at a minimum and still haven't fully sorted that out.

As it stands, I'm leaning toward using physical cnc'd panels over LCD screens for Capt and FO Instruments, but not sure what the best option is for the center panel for GTN750.  I'm going with the Air Foil Labs KA350 with RealityXP GTN750 for XP11.
