A video of my sim with the new projection system. Still a few things to restore after the switch to P3Dv3 but it is flyable again!! Worldflight will be even better this year.

We are in the middle of a heatwave, all this week the temps will be over 40C. The 3.5kw air conditioner in the shed is now under size because of the extension, the 5kw unit sits in the shed waiting for the installer to come. 5 PCs and three projectors are belting out heat like hair dryers and there was six of us in the shed last night. What I would give for a few feet of snow on the roof!!

Using heating in the basement..

Gwyn,

I am just curious about your air flow system and heat prevention. First, are you using any type of exhaust vent/fans too remove the heat? I have found that by just pumping cold into my garage with the sim fired up will not get cool enough to out do the heat. Thus, I put an exhaust fan up above the room, on a side wall, that sucks the heat out, and the air conditioners work much better.

Second, being that you're in a hot climate (generally), do you have your shed insulated? It matters just as much for cold air as it does for warm that the insulation be done. Consequently, while looking into all of this for our current new shed/hangar, there is a product that will help reflect the incoming outside heat from those hot days.

It's called Perforated Thermal Sheeting, which is like big giant sheets of aluminum foil with perforated holes, and it is laid on top of the ceiling insulation or attached to the interior roof of your shed. This thermal sheeting reflects radiant heat and thereby, keeps the interior of the shed much cooler. So, it would be a great thing for you...I will get a link for you shortly.

Lastly, I know you have the bigger AC unit coming, but how is your AC conditioned air brought into your sim? I ask because I ran a 6 inch, foil insulated, PVC pipe from a window AC unit and pumped that incoming air into the sim itself. The cold air comes from the ceiling vent of the sim and falls down onto the pilots, keeping them and the components inside much cooler. Of course, I have an enclousure with a door on the back of my sim, so that helps keep the cold air inside as well.

Best Regards,

John

Ps are you allowed to do GeoThermal in your area? You could do heat/cold air from Geo Thermal for much less in the long run...

Hi John,
My shed is fully insulated with polyester insulation - http://www.insulfibre.com.au/products/polyester-bonded/ The roof is lined with "Foilboard" which is a sandwich construction of 16mm polystyrene coated both sides in aluminium foil. The 5kw AC unit I have bought will more than adequately cool my 8.5m x 4.5m workshop. There is a vent near the sim to allow heat to escape. I am not planning to put a back wall on my sim as I quite enjoy having observers able to watch it. I have just bought a set of three business class 747 passenger seats to put behind the sim. I have window glass already made up but I am undecided whether to install it or not. If the whole shed is cool the sim will be cool. I do have some ducting and fans ready if needed but I'll see how it goes when the bigger AC is installed. I don't know what GeoThermal is!! Cheers Gwyn

Hi Gwyn,

Sorry I didn't reply sooner, but here is a good website about Geo Thermal. It mainly is about systems in the US, but it would be the same on other locations of the planet:

http://energy.gov/energysaver/geothermal-heat-pumps

On the bottom of that first page it has open-loop and hybrid systems. Which is more about cooling then it is heating; that would be what you need. Either way, Geo Thermal is good for both needs...
