Title: 777 Project Update
Post by: rprather on September 21, 2011, 02:40:59 PM
After weeks of dismantling, fiberglassing, sanding, and painting, the center pedestal is finally taking shape! Almost all the digital components are functional including all three radio comm panels, the rudder trim indicator and the CDU. The ACPs will soon be replaced and the fire handles will be installed to finish everything off.

Here are a few pics from the 2 week conversion process, which was SIGNIFICANTLY more labor intensive than I anticipated!

(https://www.cockpitbuilders.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm7.static.flickr.com%2F6195%2F6071592081_c0f352473b_b.jpg&hash=8a163d264fd2b8d991b348d2273d657ccbc45f9d)
Cut a piece of wood to fill the space and make the rail straight instead of "dipped"

(https://www.cockpitbuilders.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm7.static.flickr.com%2F6081%2F6096452507_70c86fa426_b.jpg&hash=cc23a71e8e3c3c232a825e9183e61d0b8551ae83)
Glued 1/8" wood strips in place to thicken the rail

Coated the whole rail in 2 layers of fiberglass then sanded after it cured

Sanding fiberglass, adding body filler and spotting putty (It was 105 degrees Farenheit when I was wearing this suit!! I was trying my best to stay in the shadow, which kept shrinking)

(https://www.cockpitbuilders.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm7.static.flickr.com%2F6208%2F6121350323_211825956c_b.jpg&hash=3f848a01c84912b2b5f00abdda56e779813cfa17)
After final 400 grit sanding and priming, the two different brown shades were sprayed separately.

Robert,  From the deep darks of the past, I am excited to see you here.  Your project is incredible and I was sure it was dead..  Years ago, you amazed me with your sim spares and your 777 Project, it really is awesome to see you here, and still working on it.

Congrats and I hope to see you finish this.. I can't wait to see it finished.

Hey Trev! Long time my friend! I've just been amassing parts over the last few years, hoping for time to actually build :-) Lot's of new sim parts from developers in the community have made possible what would have been VERY difficult 5 years ago, which helps a lot.

Heck yeah! I'm really giving some thought to the base/walls since my last attempt at an overhead structure wasn't very rigid. I'll give you a buzz.

Thanks very much for all the kind words! It feels great to make some visible progress again after a few years of "collecting" :-) Looking at what you guys have done I have a HELL of a lot of catching up to do! All this talk of LASERS, CNC machines, projector edge blending, interface boards and the likes, i feel like an old steamboat captain stepping onto a luxury yacht for the first time! You guys are really challenging me to step it up. Thx to Mike for getting me back into the forums and calling me periodically to make sure I'm not slacking!

Title: Throttle Quadrant Painted
Post by: rprather on September 29, 2011, 08:37:49 PM
My throttle quadrant restoration is coming along! The built up dirt inside the unit was horrid! Everything was sanded to the green primer/bare metal then primed and repainted using 777 brown instead of 767 brown. Waiting on replacement lightplates, then I'll start wiring.

Much appreciated! I like the look of the latex paint, but it seems to scratch off fairly easily even after 2 coats of primer. Does anyone else use latex?

Thanks Denis! Definitely considering adding auto-throttle functionality at some point. Will probably do non-motorized first, just to get flying, then will retrofit the motors when I can. Now, I'm just trying to find a way to control friction, since there doesn't appear to be any friction mechanism on the handle itself.

Hell, just removing the throttle handles seems to be a bit of an ordeal! Ultimately, I wouldn't mind drawing up some completely new handles to match the 777.

So Robert, this is a 767 TQ? If that is the case, talk to Phil747 he has one and completely disassembled it and repainted it.

Thanks Bob, Phil has definitely been helping me with the quad. The way they assembled this thing boggles the mind at times. For instance, just to remove the fuel control switches, you have to remove EVERY coverplate from the throttle to get underneath the metal assembly. Not even sure how Phil got out some of the handles without resorting to a cutter!! lol

Since my 767 CDU stand doesn't have a lower EICAS, I had to modify it to accommodate the 777 DU frames. There were 6 screws holding it in place, but two were very difficult to turn, so I cut off the back of the screws and the center support popped off. I then notched the aluminum DU frame, and it fit in place great! I'll have to do some more cutting to get the lower EICAS control panel to fit.

Thanks hexpope!

I cut an approximately 1/2 inch notch out of the back wall of the CDU stand in order to allow the CDU screen to fit. Until I made the notch deep enough, the screen bezel prevented the throttle quadrant from sliding into place. Now the screen fits great and the back of the frame has been sanded smooth.

Thanks for the feedback guys! The CDU is indeed from FDS. It fits really well in the original DZUS space. I'll double check the viewing angle of the Lower EICAS LCD now that it is mounted. From the captain's side, the screen was quite legible. If my preliminary experiment is consistent, the screen should be quite easy to read from the FO side as well.

Rendering the 777 flight deck has taken a LOT longer than expected, but has proven necessary to solve various challenges with the MIP design such as glareshield mounting, LCD spacing, lower EICAS monitor clearance and mating with the CDU stand. I rendered the sim room to allow proper planning of the curved screen. That has REALLY helped with calculations such as eyepoint distance, chord line and radius calculations.

My center pedestal is from a 767, so the printer area is not there. Still a LOT of work left to do, but definitely making progress.

After a year of design work, my instrument panel is finally ready for production! I tip my hat to all the hardware designers for the amount of engineering that goes into making such structures. Getting every screw, gap, mounting bracket, switch and module to line up accurately without interfering with each other has been very challenging.

I also made significant progress on the glareshield rendering. You can see the holes, under the glareshield, that I'm expecting to use for mounting the MCP and EFIS.

My MIP components have finally been cut and test mounted. I also made metal backplates for a number of my center pedestal components and finished the rendering for the CCD, which I designed to fit the ADI area on the 767 quad.

Thank you Warren! Below are my latest updates. Still a lot of detail work to do on the MIP, but it's coming along. Thanks to a lot of guidance from Phil Lambert, Matt Wietlispach and David Allen for tips with cutting/painting. The 767 CDU stand has a lot of small bits that have to be cut off before things fit properly. I'll probably repaint the CDU stand with the new batch of paint (Phil, you were right about using the same paint bucket!).

Robert! Its good to see you are still in action! I enjoy seeing people wtill around that I consider a founder of the home simulator hobby. On a bad day I can say, at least my cockpit didnt just through a flood!  :o

Your new project looks great!

Justin, thank you for your complements! This time I'm building upstairs... lol

It amazes me what is available these days that we could only dream about 10+ years ago! Lots of really impressive looking projects out there now, so I have to step it up :-)

Tested the avionics, clocks and the lightplates. Still lots of alignment to do as well as changing the standby attitude indicator to the right one :-)

Title: First Flight!
Post by: rprather on October 27, 2013, 03:18:40 PM
It's hard to believe that in 15 years, I've never simultaneously had a full set of working flight controls, avionics and visuals. So I guess this is officially the "first flight"!! It felt amazing to taxi to the runway, power up and rotate without a keyboard. Especially with the awesome sounds of the new PMDG 777. Obviously, there's still a lot of work to be done, but I'm excited about this milestone.

I had one problem with the 10.4" Pyle screen that I used for the upper and lower EICAS. The three flight instrument screens are connected via TripleHead2Go. The EICAS is mounted vertically and it supports a maximum screen resolution of 800x600. For some reason, any resolution that creates a correct aspect ratio for the pilot and F/O displays, causes the aspect ratio of the EICAS to be too wide (and therefore not take up the whole screen), and vice versa. Instead, I will connect the upper and lower EICAS together (DualHead2Go), then add the CDU to the TripleHead2Go.

Fantastic job!

It has been interesting to see the progression of this project.  I like the use of Solid Modeling as part of your concept planning.  It's always interesting to see concepts develop into actual hardware, and then functional assemblies.  Nice work!

Beautiful work Robert as always.  Must feel nice to get to a flying state.  I'm looking forward to spending quite a few hours in our 777 during Worldflight next week.

I assume your using the PMDG 777 with undocked panels?  Your earlier photos showed you testing the avionics, was this a separate package or PMDG?

Ken.

Thanks much Mike! When I see videos like yours it makes me feel the need to build faster!! :-)

@Ken, thx for the compliments! It definitely surreal to transition to flying after building for so long.

I'll be watching WF closely and sharing the link with a bunch of people here to watch it live. Trying to get a few teachers to pull up the video feed during class.

I am definitely experimenting with the undocked PMDG route. The non-normal checklist alone was enough to convince me. Will likely mean the death of Pro MFD (well, what was left of it) and the start of something new :-)

Ken, I realized I didn't completely answer your question. I am using undocked PMDG panels for the upper and lower EICAS  and Project Magenta for the PFD/ND and CDU.

@Mike, Thanks for the kind comments and look forward to flying with you soon!

I appreciate that Rob! The plan is to use ARINC heavily and use my modules without modification. I'm looking into using Arduino to do it if possible. Really disappointed V1avionics.com fell through :-(

Thanks Lance! I use three 70" LED TVs and a single computer with Eyefinity. Can't remember the make and model of the video card, but my FS computer powers all three TVs and my upper and lower EICAS (DualHead2Go connected to seperate video card).

I hear ya on the V1 deal!  Actually thanks to that falling thru I went with the older non 429 stuff to build my 732 Sim.  I to am using Arduino based interface to interface all my stuff.  It is powerful and capable for sure.
