Title: Mickey's Flightdeck - A Boeing 737-800 Cockpit on Youtube
Post by: Extraterra on August 02, 2017, 11:11:36 PM
Hello everyone,

I would like to introduce my Boeing 737-800 homecockpit project.
After a long time of planning and testing I finally found enough space and time to start my own homecockpit project.
To share the progress with the community I decided to start a youtube channnel to document every step of the build process.
At the moment I'm building the shell and parts of the inner construction. Later the topics panel creation electronics and programming will be covered. There will be further informations and sketchup files on my website http://www.mickeys-flightdeck.de (http://www.mickeys-flightdeck.de)
I hope it will be usefull for many of you.

And now I wish you a good time on Mickey's Flightdeck.

Lots of time i see people with expensive machines, tool that cant build anything nice, but man... this guy is a total pro! Even if i had the equipment i wouldent be able to do this.

I will replicate this build but with not as much details. Love the foam though, brings alot of realism to it.

Good to see you posting here and getting more YouTube videos uploaded. Just watched your latest one and it's amazing how far you've come already...

For the other members that are thinking about building a cockpit, you should watch all of Mike's videos, as they contain a lot of details about all the steps involved.

Hey Michael,

It's amazing how far you've come in such a short amount of time! I don't know if you've read any old post by Ivar Hestnes, but back in the early days he was a "Man of the Wood" like yourself.

One of Ivar's old posts:

http://www.cockpitbuilders.com/community/index.php?topic=129.msg573#msg573 (http://www.cockpitbuilders.com/community/index.php?topic=129.msg573#msg573)

He had an amazing flight simulator in the early years, when the rest of us were just getting started and he really inspired a lot of us old timers. Plus, I've haven't seen anyone come close to his woodworking abilities in that regard...at least until now! What you're doing is certainly Ivar quality and like him, shows the amount of patience a person can have when they're totally dedicated to something they love...like woodworking.

Plus, I am very happy to see you posting the build videos as well, which are just as good as your entire simulator project. Please keep going and posting updates...

John

PS I have a request, please make a bloopers video when your project is all done, as I am guessing you have some funny ones.  :idiot:

Thanks to you all. I really haven't thought about bloopers until now. I always remove the video footage after the editing to get my disk space back. When there are funny moments I tried to integrate them into the videos. But I will look out for mistakes that might be funny for you in a later best of video.

Hey Michael,

That's actually great news!

I hope you do it in the same manner as your sim project, using videos that explain everything in the simplest details. Please do this for the guys who know absolutely zero about CNC machines...like me. Explain things like which bits to use and when, feed rates, router usage, materials used, keeping everything held down when CNC'ing, your choice of CNC hardware /software and so on.

My main point is, you're very good at narrating/making videos and you have a great knack for making the topic easy to understand... :idiot:

Best Regards,

John

Yes, I will explain it as detailed as I did in my cockpit videos. I'm also completely new to the cnc topic. So I will have to find a good solution for making panels and show you the results.

Just a though Michael,

Most builders use a laser for making panels, it's a lot quicker and you can do a better job engraving with a laser that you can with a CNC.
I have a CNC and a 60 watt Laser and the combination of both means you can cut the acrylic and then machine out the back for backlighting with the CNC. I also have a small lathe, bandsaw and circular saw.

Personally I like the flexibility I get with the equipment I've got, but I would still like a machine shop like yours!  8)

Joe.

Do you switch between Laser and router on the same machine?
Title: Re: Mickey's Flightdeck - A Boeing 737-800 Cockpit on Youtube
Post by: Joe Lavery on October 09, 2018, 11:55:12 PM
No they are two separate machines. I'm pretty sure you can't get a machine that has both capabilities. A CNC machine makes a lot of mess as it cuts through the material you're working on, whereas a laser only produces fumes as it cuts.
Another thing is that the Laser doesn't have a Z axis, it only works in the X and Y planes.

I stand corrected David, BUT..... have you seen the price of that machine.  8)
You could buy a laser, CNC, Mill, and 3D printer for less than they want for it, I know which I would prefer.  :2cw: :idiot:

Hello Michael,

Thank you for another high quality and informative video.

What engraving depth did you use for the warning annunciator? You mentioned that this was deeper and better than the fire annunciator.

Also what material did you use to fill in the engraving? You mentioned that it is a type of wax if I heard correctly? Does it harden or did you cover it?

Thanks in advance

Regards

Paul

Hello Paul,

the engraving depth was set to 0.17mm. This seems to be enough for the master caution button. When I engraved the fire buttons I used this metal foil to determin the allignment of the surface. And maybe I forgot to add the thickness of the foil when I set the zero point of Z-axis. So if you do it right 0.17 - 0.2mm should be enough.

Yes, I used a wax to fill the engraving. You can find it here https://cnc-plus.de/de/Werksstoffe---Zubehoer/Farbstifte-zum-ausfuellen-einer-Gravur-mit-Farbe--Gravur-Farbfuellung-.html?XTCsid=c193987dee048ca39c170abc5fb0fca2 (https://cnc-plus.de/de/Werksstoffe---Zubehoer/Farbstifte-zum-ausfuellen-einer-Gravur-mit-Farbe--Gravur-Farbfuellung-.html?XTCsid=c193987dee048ca39c170abc5fb0fca2) but I think you will find something similar in your country. There is also a filling varnish. Maybe this is more resistend against rubbing out. The wax hardens too. But I don't trust it enough, so I will cover it with a clear varnish.

Hey Michael!

Thank you for continuing to post here and making inspirational YouTube videos. You have came a long way over the last year and proved that anyone with enough drive can build a flight simulator.

Plus, IMHO you've proved too be the ultimate DIY builder of the year with all the topics you've covered in 2019. Thus, I nominate you:

Cockpit Builders Website

"Builder of the Year-2019"

Not sure if Trevor still gives that website award/title out, but the forums section sure could use it again. That way we all can vote on someone each year... I am sure he'll read this and comment.

After I started the work for the electric panel of my overhead, it is finally finished. The main problem was to make the pcb for the 14 7-segment displays. But more about this long story in the video.
Because you have to order some copies of the pcb, I have some left over here. So if anyone of you is building this panel using my files, I can offer you one of these for 8 EUR excluding the sjipping costs. Just send me a message with your destination if you are interested. I have four pieces left over.

Hey Everyone,

If you're looking to do your own B737 panels on a CNC or Laser Cutter/Engraver, checkout Mickey's website. You can become a member for €45.00 and access all his files in DXF format, as well as other files.

Plus, any future files he makes you'll have access too them as a part of your lifetime membership! I joined up and downloaded everything as I plan to try my hand at making some panels...the easy ones...lol!

Any hoot, check out his website and watch his YT videos; especially, the videos because he shows how to make the panels from the very same files you'll get from the membership....

John

PS I am not affiliated with Mickey in any way, just wanted too share that I purchased/joined his website. 😁

Thanks for posting the updates! I will be downloading the new files as well.

To all members, if you're looking for 3D .STL files, CNC files and Laser Cutter/Engraver files of everything Mickey has done on his B737NG. Visit his website and join for a small fee too get all his files and plans. This even includes his shell, panels or anything else he has come up with.

Trust me when I say you would never get these files anywhere for such a great a price! I've been in this hobby as a builder for 15+ years and can attest that Mickey's work is very nice.

Kind Regards,

John

I enjoyed watching the video, but I have to comment that I think you should have printed the pull handles horizontally on the bed. This would have realised three benefits:

1 The part would be stronger in the direction that force is applied
2 The model would have required less support material
3 The model would print faster (because of less support material)

I always think of the layer lines as weak spots and try to orient my model so that the layer lines are less likely to be stressed.

But, your final design works, and looks great. Thanks for posting.

Comment regarding 3D Printing print direction...

Your point is well taken, but this is highly dependent on the type of filament material being printed.  PLA Filament is more prone to weakness, depending on print direction/Layer Height.  I prefer to use PETG with a 0.6mm nozzle; it is non-toxic to print, can be printed fast, and its strength/durability is much like nylon.  PETG prints nicely at 250C Nozzle Temp @ 80C Bed Temp, with Layers fusing together nicely.

All the Best in 2023!
Mike
