Congratulations John!  Nothing better than all your Sim efforts coming to life (electronically speaking).

I notice the guarded switches on the left side panel.  What are those for?   Are you planning for a Steering Tiller?

It looks like you are using OpenCockpit's Rudder modules.   If so, be sure to check that there is a slight amount of play between the gear teeth and the gear on the potentiometer.  This way it will not be mechanically "loaded", which could cause a pot failure.  I have had two such failures due to this problem with my OC Rudders.   Other than that, the rudders are great value for the money.

Anyway, great progress on your Sim Project!

Yep Bernard, and soon I will fly over the Red Sea! LOL!

Here is a tidbit about all the extra days involved; has anyone noticed the switches on the sides? Well, currently they serve 1 of 2 purposes.

First, they're presently being used as on/off switches for the PC power supplies and all the 28v lights, since I haven't wired them up to the proper locations on the MIP and Overhead yet.

Second, once I do wire them up correctly, the side switches for the lights will turn into individual safety power switches. So, they'll have too be on in order for the normal cockpit switches/knobs to control the lights.

Why? Well, if I have any issues with a single light, I can shut it off without the need to shutoff the entire 28V power supply. Kind of a manual circuit breaker function, even though I am using in-line 10AMP circuit breakers on each item.

Luckily, I've learned that if you go away for just a quick bathroom break and the sim is in AP mode, it'll be then an electrical fault will occur. So, those individual circuit breakers should help and there is now the fall back switches. Who knows, maybe someday these switches can be true circuit breakers that work...any ideas from you guys on doing this?

Kind Regards,

GOD!

Finally got my seat mounted with some working rails thanks to JackPilot's suggestion of using manual car seat rails.  Took two sets, 90 degrees off from each other, and I now have forward and back, side to side movement for $65 USD.

Oh, and a butt-kicker attached to the underside for a little extra umph :)  Thanks bernard!

bernard S

welcome 😄  looks great as well   those butt kickers will make for a more immersive exprience .. are they run through its own amp and pc etc  or they stand alone

Quote from: ame on March 20, 2020, 08:23:12 PMToday I did a quick test of my tacho sensor in the prop sync indicator, to see if it would actually work.

I'm using this tiny motor inside:
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000152447766.html

At the end of the shaft is the black and white segmented indicator disc.

At the gearbox I have another disc. This one is half black, half white, on the 'back' side towards the gearbox and motor.

An optical sensor is mounted close to the gearbox, looking at the back of that disc. It can detect the black and white halves which gives me a tachometer signal which I can use to measure the rotation speed.

Between the two discs is an LED. It shines through the white parts of the indicator disc. I was hoping it did not shine back through the tacho disc. It doesn't. :)

tacho_test.jpg

In the photo you can see the LED pushed through a hole on the left. It lights up the indicator face and the whole of the front of the body. I'll print the body in black and paint the inside white. The indicator illumination is much more even than it appears in the photo.

On the right is the optical sensor. It is a TCRT5000, which is common and cheap, although I'd like to use an RPR220, which is smaller. It is pointed towards the back of the tacho disc inside. I get clean regular pulses from the output of the sensor. It seems to be unaffected by the white LED.

Next step is to add an H-Bridge to control the motor from an Arduino, and write some code to match the motor speed to the desired speed using the tacho signal.

Oh, I dind't see this one. I made this gauge for a friend of mine some time ago. I made it with a stepper motor, a vid6606 driver for ultra smooth rotation and an Arduino mini, or micro, or something like that :)   everything in the package (disc, light, stepper, driver and arduino). So it is just plug and play (with a Lua script through fsuipc).

And in this days, I have made the fuel selectors for my piper comanche home cockpit:

I have installed a push button too as you can see. This button will add 1 gallon of fuel for each push, in the tank or tanks that are selected. It only works while plane on ground.
In this way I don't have to open the fuel menu in the software :)

Currently powered with a 4 x 50W per channel car amp.  2 channels for each seat's sub, and the other 2 channels for the overhead speakers.  Fed via PC outputs.  Small change compared to your beast of a sound system!

sagrada737

Very nice work on the Tach and the Fuel Selectors!

Regarding the ButtKicker transducers...   You Might try remounting the transducer so it is in the lateral orientation.  For seat mounting, I find that this produces/induces better vibration through the seat.

Bernard had suggested that too, but for space reasons I decided to put it under the seat.  I'll re-look at it as I don't feel any vibration in my back which is probably more effective.

sagrada737

You can mount it on the back of the seat.  Make a cover so it is not too visible.  you will be surprised at the difference in performance and effect.

Hi there,

I thought about using a stepper, and I still might. However, I really like the tiny DC motor and gearbox that I found, so I wanted to use it. I will also use an Arduino Pro Mini, but probably as an I2C device.

I also need to pester RayS again for dimensions of the front block and bezel. I like to make things that are similar in shape to the original.

Did you publish your design anywhere?

Tomorrow my ARINC429 Development kit arrives from Holt Industries.

Hoping to get a Rockwell-Collins CTL-92 transponder to work.

Finally got around to rewiring the NG ACPs from scratch.

Glad to see you guys advancing, it's been nothing except FREAKING GREMLINS for me!

Every step of the way has been a nightmare, and all from a system that worked perfectly fine before. The insanity gets crazy; however, not going too quit...yet lol!

John I hear you about the gremlins.. I had a few more power gremlins creep in over the past few weeks. Nothing serious and no parts melted but frustrating just the same.

Just plain annoying at this point. Hope to have my gremlins exorcised by tomorrow.
Ray Sotkiewicz

blueskydriver

Hey Ray,

Totally agree how annoying the Gremlins can be and it explains why Lego sets are up and coming for me! Worst you can do there is drop a completed set or step (wheelchair wheel for me) on one...ouch!

Call me crazy though and as if I cannot get enough of the Gremlins, I am planning to do a complete upgrade...new SSD drives, Win10, P3Dv4 (will wait on v5 for now), and ProSim737.

What worries me is Win10 and all the hardware drivers. I've only installed Win10 on one of my computers and it's mainly a workstation. Biggest probably there was hardware drivers...

Still, it's all in the name of me being committed the funny farm...lol...I mean in the name of flight simulation.

This weekend's project:

Aside from flying in an online event hosted by PilotEdge this Saturday, I'll be working on my latest project: a CANBUS Master controller. The blank circuit cards arrived from manufacturing earlier this week and I have one nearly complete.

Mick, have I told you how much I hate you lately :-P  Would love to get my hands on a couple of those!  Getting to the point I need to start figuring out my audio.  I have the FDS ACP which will have to do for now.

Mick, can they be used as-is?  I have a pair - shudder at having to rewire them.

Thanks.
