I recently flew to Florida on vacation and as I was getting hit in the head / shoulders with carryon bags I wondered why do airlines load from front to rear . . wouldn't it make more sense to board from rear to front?  Any reason airlines do this?

Which airline?

Usually the back rows are called first

Delta.     Seems the logical order would be to fill the rear first so you don't have everyone bumping into you.  First/business class boarded first which if I were flying first/business I would rather board last especially on days when the cabin is hot.  I thought this amusing as the first/business class travelers are dodging the carry on!  This was on a 737 and a CRJ.   Outside of the boarding issue had really great flights.   737 into Key West was fun . . nice landing by the crew.  Captain advised that the braking may be a little harder than most were accustomed too due to shorter runway but I really didn't notice that much difference.

On some german airlinesnlike germanwings the boarding depends on your seatrow.
First the rear rows are boarding, then the other.it is controlled by the personal at the entry.
If you are carried with busses to your plane the divide the pax. Row 1-9 front staiway/door the other back stairs door.

There was a story about a scientist who worked out that alternating rows is the way to board faster.... Called the Steffen Method.
