Hi Andre, great job, I love it, question,  what size monitor you use for the center EICAS? I need two of them for my first sim, I have the flight Illusion gauges but the FDS monitor is too wide, can you let me know were to buy it?

Thanks, Sam.

Hi Sam!
Thank you for the kind words. I'm using the screens from the link below as my upper and lower Eicas screens. I was worried about the view angle when I ordered them as I didn't want to lose a ton of clarity based on the captain/first officer eye point but This turned out to be a non issue.
They had to be flipped 90 degrees in order to fit.

Hi Andre,

You forgot to add the link you mentioned, also your blog has lots of missing images. It says you moved them  :(

Cheers
Joe.

Thanks for the heads up on the blog. I am doing some Photobucket re-arranging and will have it fixed shortly :)

...and after you're done building this flying prey, I'll show you how to build a flying predator. :D

Keep up the good work man!

Just an FYI, that screen is not very good.  It is only 800x600 and 300:1 contrast ratio.    For a little more money you can get 1024x768 and 1200:1 contrast ratio.

I bought my lower mfd display from this store and it is very nice.

I am not wanting to start a flame throwing war here.
To me I have focused on building my dream while keeping a budget in mind. This is why i saved about $1400 in my scratch built shell and another $1000 in the mip stand/cdu bay by building it myself.
I'm not quite sure how $340+$40 in shipping is a "little" more money for the extra resolution and contrast ratio. Sure the 1024x768 is something I considered back and forth for weeks as I get the concept of what it should bring. However, when I weighed the pros and cons I decided that I would try the screen that I bought and when fired up against the pfd/nd screens I cant see a noticeable difference. My biggest focus with the Eicas screens was to ensure that the image didnt lose too much sharpness due to the viewing angle and I am pleased with the end result.
Again, i apologize if I sound blunt. I just want to take smart steps towards completing my dream.

XOrionFE

Sorry Andre,

I didn't mean to come off sounding like I was knocking your choice....simply pointing out a better choice.    The reality is that if you are building 737 you are spending a lot of money.  An extra $150-200 for a much better LCD in the grand scheme of building a sim that will end up cost north of 20 k is excuse me for saying but a drop in the bucket....

Maybe too much for your taste but I know Sam just bought a sim with full motion.   I just didn't want him or anyone else jumping on that LCD without understanding the facts about its spec or the other options out there.  I hope you can understand that.

Again,  no offense meant so please don't read into it too much....

I guess my response was about as direct as your advice and I apologize as well :)
It was unnecessary of me.
I've got the lower screen in and have started the work on the yoke mechanism.

Good morning guys!!!  No need to argue over a monitor, I understood both of your points, I appreciate both of your recommendations, Scott's recommendation came a bit late, but I'm sure Andre's can't be bad because he is using it and it looks fantastic, I believe that we have to wait to see the results

Sean

Sam, excuse my curiousity, but what do you need to do to get your sim flying?

Hi Sean, I'm not even sure what I need, Sam.

Flyboyandre

It feels like ages since my last update but here is another tidbit of what i'm working on right now.
This evening I finished the main flight control link between the captain and first officer side. The frame and pivot cage is made of 1 1/4" square steel tubing. Dont read to much into the details as the yoke tubes and elbows arent permanently installed.
I am still awaiting the gas struts that will establish the neutral point as well as resistance when pushing/pulling on yoke.

I am also expecting part from different parts of the world, including the landing gear lever and yokes.

I remember the days where progress was noticeable on a daily basis. Those days seem to be long gone. Nevertheless I'm pushing forward and things are starting to take shape. The last couple of weeks have been solely dedicated to the flight control mechanism. Forward motion got a bit of a blow when I smacked the hammer over my thumb. What did I learn? Dont swing a hammer when you are tired and pissed off at the project. All I have left now on this part is linking up the actual yokes, which I hope to have completed this weekend. Yokes arrived from Throttletek in El Salvador.

Ouch!

Yokes are looking great Andre.   very clean looking mechanism.   You weld all that up yourself?   I always wanted to get a little mig welder.  All I have is Oxy Acetylene and im not that great at using it.   This is really coming together nicely.

Scott

Flyboyandre

Yeah, i welded it all myself Scott. It was my excuse for a new tool :)
I'm not very good yet but it got better as I worked my way through it. Love this 170A MIG/Flux welder.
Thanks for the kind words. It turned out pretty good for completely scratch built (except the handles).
Building some new elbows at the top as I wasnt happy with the lack of space inside the ones I used. Hoping to have it done this weekend.

Really looking good Andre! Knowing how and having the welding tools must be a big benefit. I'm still stuck in the wood era and need to get a bit more modern!

Always enjoy the updates

I just love the excuse to buy new tools and use projects like this as a bargaining point :)
Nevertheless I hope to have my roll mechanism done by the end of the day tomorrow.

Alright friends, i'm finally about to wrap this part of the project. Being that i'm not much of a planner, I like to invent things as I go along. So after going through a few revisions I have come up with a very smooth working roll mechanism for the upper elbows. The handles operate with 180 degrees turn in each direction. Wires feed through the pivot block center tube and down the column.
These upper elbows were fun to engineer and i wouldn't be opposed to building for others if there is an interest. The elbow itself fits on the 3" columns.
The third link is a quick video clip showing the smooth movement. You can hear the built in stoppers as the handle rotate to 180 degrees..

Many of my friends on here have been asking for an update on the project. I have been working hard on the flight control mechanism. It has taken some time to get it right. Although I have some finetuning left, I am close to having it done.
