Title: My 737 build continues - Making Dzus and Pedestal Build
Post by: XOrionFE on December 19, 2009, 12:47:06 AM
Decided to have a go at making my own Dzus for my pedestal build as I have a CNC and my friend Vince gave me his gcode.   Here you can see how they turned out.    BTW- If I didnt have a CNC I would have been going to Vince or Phil to make me a batch! :-)

Cutting out a batch....

Again, not taking away from Phil.  If you need Dzus...he is your man as I am not nor do I have time to make these for sale.   Was a lot of fun making them though :-)

Regards,
Scott

Scott, they look great.  Good for you.  We all know there is some "EXTRA" satisfaction when we build things ourselves, and for those of you who have the tooling to build that kind of thing, My hat goes off to you.

In the meantime..  My orders are with the people who have the experience and talen to build these items for me...

Awesome Pictures.

Thank you Trevor.

Yeah, initially I intended to make my own panels on the CNC also but over the last 6 months I have learned how much work is involved.   Also, CNCs dont do as nice a job engraving as lasers.   This is why I decided to buy the Open Cockpits panels for my pedestal for now.   Now having seen more of Phil's work I am licking my chops at the thought of getting some overhead panels from him down the road.   In any event, there is no way I could hope to reproduce panels to his quality or like what I have seen of Engravity pictures without putting myself in the nut house.  Best leave those things to the experts.   I will only be taking on the little (easier) projects like this myself I think.  I also need to give credit to Vince for the Cad work because again, this can take a ton of time to plan right and good engineering.  Much easier as you said to leave it to the experts...

Great work. I just found out the other day that the ones we use are injected-moulded, and for my father to use those instead of making his own I can certainly appreciate that there must be a fair amount of work involved! Very nice.

Dean.

Hehehe no not at all i have enough on my plate to be getting on with, one observation, change the bolt your using to a brass M4 "cheese head" bolt, (granted cheese head sounds like somthing the doctor will say you have got after a week in thailand ;) there a spot on replica for the real ones, thats what i use.

But apart from that spot on work sir, keep us posted :)

Thank you Phil.

Yes, these are DIN 84 "Cheesehead" bolts which supposedly are an exact match for the real head style only they are zinc plated steel instead of brass.  This is the ones I bought:

Here is a link to more technical specs on Dzus fasteners for anyone interested.  My friend Vince found the actual tech specifications.  The bolts I bought are very close in profile I think.

When I first read "Cheesehead" I had to ask my wife if she heard of them since she is from Wisconsin....lol.  For those of you outside the US who may not know....midwesterners in the US call Wisconsin natives "Cheesheads".   That is because they make a lot of Cheese in Wisconsin as it is a center for dairy products.     You can also see the classic Cheesehead hat during any Green Bay Packers games worn by fans.....

Those are called fillister head screws. I never heard of them called cheese head screws.
