Why are these headsets so sought after? I mean yeah they're light weight and jet headsets. Is there just not another alternative?

I have two of these and can speak to the advantages.....

- Lightweight and comfortable to wear
- Excellent clarity
- And the most important perhaps (for me)......The design of the ear piece does not block out ambient cockpit sounds....so you can clearly hear engine, wind, and other cockpit-related sounds.

They are reasonably priced second hand on EBay.( 50-100) for a $250 professional grade headset.
You have to be patient though

I have two for intercom/ATC and they work flawlessly.
The only alternative I know are quality USB PC headsets which are recognized as a "soundcard"by the PC.

In any case avoid the "big ears" GA type  which are better suited to noisy environment.
Telex MRB series is fine also, not too heavy and dirt cheap, very limited phonic insulation, which is better for the sim. I used one for years for real flying

What intercom system do you use?

Real aircraft 12v intercom so you can just plug the Telex in.($50 70)
Most have a audio feed for music that you can use for ATC.
I personally prefer using the ceiling speakers for FS ATC.

Using the FlightSoundsX dual intercom interface here with the Telex 750s.  Easy to set up...essentially Plug and Play.
