Hello everyone, from Snowy and cold Germany.

Most of you old-timers on the site are used to it.  Anytime I disappear you know when I pop back up I'm in a new location.

I want to apologize for dropping off the face of the earth for the last eight months or so but I was caught up in the move, the new job, family, and life.  Every time I contemplated logging in I stopped myself as I knew the moment I did - I would drop everything and get my sim rebuilt, which I really couldn't do.

I'm going to miss Tampa, but I've got a nice place near the airport here in Stuttgart, and I'm working at my old Command, as a civilian now.  It's just me and the dog now, as my youngest went of on her freshman year at the Colorado School of Mines.  My other daughter is actually stationed here, so we hang out some.

The real news...  I am happy to announce that Build 5.0 is in progress as of this weekend.

The 210 degree screen is already back up, and the projectors are mounted.  It was almost perfect right out out of the  boxes!  Still some tweaking to do.

Anyway, I can't wait to get caught up on the news.

Take care, and let me know if you're in the neighborhood!  Any of you new guys/gals near me?  Always looking for a sim to fly, and can always use help putting mine back together!

Welcome back Warren!  Good to know you are doing well.

And yes, once you fall into the black hole that this hobby is it will always suck you back in...no escaping it!

Hi Warren, Always good to hear from a familiar face. All the best to you.

blueskydriver

OMG is this Geremy from GLB Products? Where have you been, didn't think you were still in the community.

Just checked your website and there you are still buying/selling/trading flight sim items...that's awesome!

Glad you're still around,

John

Does anyone have a source for rolls of reflective mylar in Greece, or that ships to Greece?

I've decided to give building a collimated display a shot and I'm going to try to go the vacuum curved reflective mirror method a shot. The new sim hanger is bare, and it's a great time to experiment?

I'll need a roll about 50 feet long - what I can find online, is all 4 foot width - I'm really looking for 6-8 feet width.

This is frustrating.  Pot growers could be much more effective if they had wider rolls of mylar!

I'm also open to other options for collimating the display - if anyone has one - and doesn't involve buying a level 5 sim.

I'll build a smaller scale model and test it with Pico projectors

Thought you might find this a good reference. I consult with Q4 Services in Orlando. They may be open to selling you Mylar, but it will be expensive at the size you need. Turns out there are only one or two companies in the world that make Mylar in large format sheets and companies like Q4 buy almost all of the stock as soon as it is made. Then hold it in their warehouses until customer orders come in.

hi ho Warren,   as far as I know me and 1 other have collimated displays.. the mylar  system you are considering is a nightmare and I will explain why

1... its seriously expensive not the mylar  but the mirror
2...  requires alot of maintenence
3...  takes up a huge amount of space
4.... the mirror has to be made for a 73   9ft radios

I could go on but it would come across as raining on your parade and we can't have that

However all is not lost on getting rid of the dreaded crabbing effect  consider a WAC system   the cost of entry is no so nutty   the juju is in the beam splitter and the angle   plus much smaller you only  need 55 inch concave mirrors you just need someone that has access to the molds for such mirrors

funny thing is a few years ago o tried giving a full systems away ..as in come and pick it   I had no takers   I ended up  almost forcing it on mr abc and he loves it ...collimation is the way to go but cost of entry can be prohibitive

RayS

If memory serves, tht other guy who has the same config said that you have to buy the mylar by the mile, not the foot, so you end up with miles and miles of mylar you may never use.

So Hello...  no, I didn't die trying to build the display.  Just got sucked into work in Greece for six months.  Great success there - just not much success or time on any simming related projects.

I am now back in Germany for the winter... and quarantined with COVID that surprisingly I didn't catch flying 30,000+ miles, or sailing on various ships over the last six month- but caught at one night of the Stuttgarter Volksfest last week when I returned.

I haven't given up on the collimated display.  Still looking for mylar - China wants to sell me literally tons - and while I am willing to compromise with a four foot height - I can't get that shipped to Greece so I'll try to get it while I'm in Germany.

The bad is part is my sim is in pieces in it's new home in Greece, and I'm here in Germany for the next months missing simming

Ergo...  I am now contemplating a new build in Germany that will scratch the itch.  Bought an Xbox Series X but it's just not the same.

It will be a smaller sim - but I'm torn between GA with MSFS, or MIL and DCS.

Thoughts?

Go 4 DCS, 2020 is not what it "looks" (IMHO of course) :P

That's what my daughter says.  I already own DCS on Steam.  Of course, I also have MSFS on Steam.  And on Xbox.

And I just got impatient and ordered about $3500 worth of new gaming PC.  I can always use it as my main 737 PC in the future - there...  justified.

Decisions.... decisions.
