Title: Update on our motion project
Post by: dnoize on February 24, 2010, 11:14:59 PM
I promised to keep you all updated on our first motion sim project, so here are 2 video's we made recently.

http://www.youtube.com/user/engravity#p/a/u/1/aVzwChycsVI (http://www.youtube.com/user/engravity#p/a/u/1/aVzwChycsVI)

http://www.youtube.com/user/engravity#p/a/u/0/DEY6ry9YNE4 (http://www.youtube.com/user/engravity#p/a/u/0/DEY6ry9YNE4)

The Platform will accomodate a projection dome, full 737 shell, instructors cabin and a balcony.

Over the next few weeks we will be placing the shell and instructors cabin..

The sim is being custom build  for Simsensation (www.simsensation.nl (http://www.simsensation.nl)).

Simsensation will be using this sim for both training professionals but also for renting to the casual simmer. More information on simsensation on their website: www.simsensation.nl (http://www.simsensation.nl)

Simsensation is located at Lelystad Airport, right next to the Aviodrome Museum, location of the yearly FSweekend Event.

The 6 DOF platform is manufactured by MOOG.

Moog is one of the market leaders in the motion industries and its platforms are being used in level-D sims from CAE and FlightSafety International.

More information on MOOG and their motion solutions can be found here:

Stef, this is absolutly Beautiful.  Is the Platform a 3 phase setup? Or just standard single Phase 220?  What an amazing piece of kit.

Looking in from the back with the 2 Ipeco's + J-rails just fitted. Interiors are partially fitted.

A view from the front. Sorry for the bad quality, taken with my phone.
ICS interface system and gauges have been fitted. The ICS interface is modular and eliminates the need for wiring switches, annunciators, etc. Very failsafe this way and the modular system is perfect for maintenance.

Captains side. Ipeco seat with j-rails fitted. This is the newer electrically adjustable model, an option on the 737. It can be adjusted manually and electrically. Same seats are used on the 747/400.
Interiors are partially fitted.

OK, another small update:

The instructors cabin is spray painted and waiting for its logo:

Last work being done under the hood. When all is done, the windows will be fitted and the dome will be closed. There is an accesdoor to the dome for maintenance.

Part of the instructors cabin. 2 seats will be fitted + the instructors station (touchscreens). Its quite spacey for 2 persons.

view from the captains seat. Screens, gauges and ics system fitted. Only the MCP PRO needs to be placed.

Some close up shots. We are detail freaks, so all kinds of screws are fitted. Diferent sizes, some countersunk, etc. Not all functional, other than wanting to replicate the exact look of the real panels.

Plug and play pedestal. All modules functional, including the mic selector panel, the firepanel, cargo fire panel, radar panel, stab trim panel and even the lighting panel and the door/trim panel.
More news about the new plug and play modules soon.

Uhmmmm dont know what this is.....you didnt see it ;-)

Looks like a ...uhmmm.... other  ICS thingy: No more wiring, looks sooo CLEAN !

Its not finished yet, knobs need to be fitted, dark filters for the displays, annunciators need to be fitted and the aluminium caps on the honeywell switches need to be replaced by white caps (yes the real locking honeywells are fitted).
When that is done it will be fitted in the sim. Plug and play, just one usb plug and a power line.

Simply stunning Stef.

Probably one of the many overlooked features in a simulator is the sound system. Can I ask what you will be using and where the speakers will be housed.

Keep up the great work.

I plan on using multiple soundcards to be able to spread the sounds over seperate systems.
This sim will be running the Flightdecksoftware suite and we are closely working with Bart on several aspects.

Bart is currently working on the sounds and the GPWS sounds have been incorporated allready.

Speakers will be places on the spots where they are in the real craft too: in the ceiling trim and at the cdu bay. Underfloor speakers will provide ambient sounds like rumble and engine sounds. still in doubt about sonic transcducers as the motion will cause some rumble too. No need for bass shakers to simulate runway bumps, etc as the motion platform allready does that.

Bart has been an excellent help in incorporating our wishes in his software, especially when it comes to the instructor station, for which a special version will be created that will also control the MOOG motion platform.

getting closer to the final updates for this project.....

Interiors almost finished. only need to add the ceiling trim and the aft overhead. You can just see the 2 seats in the instructors cabin.

A shot of a part  of the instructors cabin. The seats are pneumatic and MUCH more comfortable than the IPECO's at half the price.

Instructorstation is operated by a single touch screen. The floodlighting in the instructorstation is blue and dimmable.

ceiling trim fitted.....only the aft overhead remains to be fitted.

Some last shots of the finished sim in the hangar at Simsensation.

Next weekend we will be finetuning the software and the platform with MOOG and Flightdecksoftware engineers.

In july it should be operational.
