Title: X-Plane Scenery and Airports
Post by: XOrionFE on December 31, 2012, 04:48:43 AM
I wanted to shed some light on some of the scenery available in X-plane 10 because I believe there is a lot more than folks realize and want to make sure everyone is aware.    As new stuff comes out perhaps it can be added to this thread.

Base platform should be X-plane 10 Global

Free Aerosoft Airports included:
EBBR, EDDH,EDDK,EDDM,EDDS,EDDT,EDDV,EDLP,EGBB,EGKK,EGLL,EGPF,EGSS,EGDW,LEBL, LEMP, LFMN,LFPG,LFPO,LPFR,LSGG

Others included free: KSEA, innsbruk

Available Excellent Payware airports:
Wilmington Int'l
KSEA
KSFO
KLGA
KMIA
KMDW
KPAE
KTOA
KJFK
KPWT
KBFI
KRNT
PAKT
CYVR

Excellent Payware Scenery I have and can vouch for:

REALSCENERY - Florida, Tennessee, Washington, Oregon, Arizona, Island of Oahu

Cities - Tucson, Reno/Carson City, Phoenix, San Francisco, Seattle

Other Areas - Western Canada (Final Frontier), Canadian Rockies, and Alaskan Panhandle (inside passage) which is great for Bush flying.   Rest of Alaska including major airports like Anchorage coming in 2013.

Other payware I don't have yet but on my list:
New Zealand
UK Photoscenery
Hamburg
Amsterdam
Toulouse
Zurich
Lugano
Keflavic

Now note that this is not an exhaustive list but merely the main stuff I know about to date.   In addition, there have been a lot of conversions of FSX scenery to X-Plane and are made regularly freely available at X-Plane.org by user community.   There is also information on how to do this on the site.

As you can see, X-Plane 10 is certainly not lacking in good scenery.  Obviously no where near as much as FSX but version 10 is relatively new yet by comparison and will take time.  Yes, I am very optimistic of its future.

If anyone has more recommended scenery I didn't list or can comment on any scenery above that I listed as not purchased yet please add to the thread.

Thank you,
Scott

Scott, I agree in small numbers your right there is great scenery for X plane, and you know I'm a huge fan of it and I would through FSX in the bin tomorrow if I could!

My concern is the developers are not developing for X plane and those that are are definitely the minority! I mean your list is all American pretty much! I have tried Lugano which is an aerosoft product and its awesome! I'm annoyed with aerosoft as they openly said to the public that they were getting on board with xplane but take a look at their previews forum! Everything they are developing is FSX!

I'm not moaning im just a bit upset really as I absolutely love xplane it's truly amazing and FSX is only close to it because of the scenery but I just don't think the developers will ever be brave enough to ditch FSX and let's be honest why would they as they won't make any money out of xplane! I have seen the financial results myself. Plus developing for an ever changing sim is never ideal!

I have had a go at the fs2xplane program too and it doesn't work and needs the sloping runways turned off too and that's one thing I want to have turned on in xplane.

Anyway it's night time here so I'm off for some xplane flying!

Good thread this Scott will be a good resource!

Great thread Scott.  I agree XP scenery is a little light on at the moment compared to FSX but as your list testifies, there is an increasing amount being developed.  I believe in the "100th Monkey" principle, as more users come on board and jump up n down or even start developing for themselves (XP has a pretty comprehensive environment editor), commercial developers will see it as a cash cow.  Where that tipping point will be (the 101st Monkey) who knows but it will come.  Besides, XP10 takes advantage of all the current GPU power and shader technology that FSX is totally oblivious too due to its age.  Keen developers should see this as a tasty challenge :)

Now, to build another 2 PC's!

Ken.

It should be in there.  I believe it is actually one of the demo areas so maybe comes with the demo?   Are you using X-Plane 10 Global?   Make sure you installed that area of the world.

It's getting better all the time in terms of content - sadly the patent troll UNILOC has wrapped its tentacles around Laminar Research and is squeezing.

Do what you can to support LR since XP and FightGear are the only computer flight sims left for us enthusiasts.

make sure under "Operations and Warnings" menu you set the Startup to start each flight with engines running.   Oh, also download and install the x737 aircraft model but make sure that you delete the plugin for it because you dont want that interfering with Sim-A.

In your rendering set to start full screen.

This should help you in your testing so you dont have to fiddle around starting things.

I think they come in from an update to 10.10 once you have it installed.  If not anymore then let me know and I will send the files.  They should be there though.

Nat,

Yes it will install all of these airports when you run the updater to get it all up to date. Also I know my copy of xplane10 actually came with a separate disc with the aerosoft airports on.

Just a few more European sceneries to add. It's looking good for France

Firstly the FranceVFR team who make awesome scenery for FSX have switched to xplane too! Their new site can be found here http://www.xpfrance.com/en/ (http://www.xpfrance.com/en/) terrain mesh is released but looks like all their FSX sceneries and photo VFR is to follow.

Secondly just downloaded and installed LFOB which is a Paris airport used by the low costs and its an awesome scenery! Up there with the best payware stuff

LFOB http://xpfr.org/?body=scene_accueil&sc=-1 (http://xpfr.org/?body=scene_accueil&sc=-1)

Thanks

Nat,

The link has been taken down I think.

Those sceneries look awesome for freeware!!

I think I have found the mother of all freeware sites though!!!!

http://simheaven.de/ (http://simheaven.de/) is a site that is all freeware! ZL 17 photo sceneries which are constantly updated and OSM data to go over it.

I have installed most of the alps and its awesome! I would pay £100's for this and it's all free!!!

Rhys,
Thanks for the link,i've been caughtup in this xplane thing as well. Had trouble accepting
it but persevered,d/l some of the free softaware and now starting to believe it going somewhere. I'm a bit confused, oSM sceneries and Photo Sceneries, whats the difference
and i gather you use both. Could you please explain.
Thanks
Les
Title: Re: X-Plane Scenery and Airports

The Photo sceneries are the VFR photoreal textures that drape over the mesh.

As far as the OSM sceneries its fairly easy to explain: Xplane uses open street map (OSM) to generate its buildings and roads. As OSM is a real time updated database that determines where and what type of roads and buildings are all over the world. This is updated constantly so every month there is more detail in this so to update this in xplane keeps more detail being added.

So you have the base layer which is the photo texture then the OSM layer is above this so where the photo scenery shows a road in the sim the OSM data will place that road on it with the traffic etc,

Hope that makes sense :)

Nat,

It is bud. OSM2xp is the conversion program. Australia is on open street map so it can be done, you just need the photo scenery.

I suggest trying simheaven.de in my above post that should give you everything
