Planning my next project to ago along with my upgrade.  Anyone have any experience getting an OEM sperry RMI to work with a teensy or arduino?
I want minimal extra crap to get it running

Been a while since I've posted. Making a custom frame for my overhead so it'll fit my cockpit. Using aluminum which is fun and frustrating to work with. Hope to start wiring this weekend.

blueskydriver

Do you want too buy a real Forward Overhead frame?

Not sure it would fit the cockpit?  When I did a measurement my panels from flightsimulatorparts.com seem to be a bit bigger than OEM...wish I had known that before I bought them!

jskibo

Ordered the remaining Light Plates and Backing plates for the left side console in the F16 Sim.

Ordered the 737 MAX EFIS for CPT and FO.

Picked up a bunch of Pokeys cards from Warren for the F16 Sim

Got confirmation my F16 Forward and Aft Glare Shields will ship this month

Nice overhead. How did you get the panels attached to frame?

Small screws. Not the dzus kind. The frame is a bunch of aluminum angle pieces and a few flats. It is nice and light but a bit too flexible. Working on studying it up now. Will all be wired to a fds interface card.

I have found this to be the case with thin metal as well. It requires another thicker metal frame or wood to prevent sagging . Your project looks great.

Where is everyone? Tumble Weeds rolling around the site the last few days...lol!

How about some updates?

For myself, I'm contemplating a new computer system, something that could run MSFS 2020 whenever it comes out, as well as Adobe software and Da Vinci Resolve.

However, I've never once went this direction. All my other sim computers' were high-end paperweights and only used for FSX. Nothing like dumping $3k-$5k in a box and only use it for one thing.

Thus, that's my question of the week...have you ever setup your system for other tasks, and if so, what methods did you employ...like dual boot, dual SSD and HDD for separate things such as all the flight sim on one set and video editing (or whatever) on a second set?

All ideas will be appreciated, along with keeping this thread going...

Single boot for me.
One SDD (256...512gb) for windows and programs.
Second SSD (1tb) just for simulator and data
HDD for back ups, music, films etc..

Today I am installing post lights.

Very nice setup there, are those home made gauges or Simkits, or perhaps Flight Illusion?
Looks good whatever.

Some rear shots would be interesting, we all like to see how it's done.

Be interested in how you made your post lights. Im just 3d printing my ones, your one may be better.

Such amazing work! Your attention to detail is amazing, as well as your willingness to help your fellow builders...thank you for posting.

Hi all. I've been away from building for around six years due to a lack of space and other things. Great to come back here and see what's new! I've been lucky to get my sim room now and I've started to unbox and install my old bits and pieces. Here's the first power-up of my 737 Fire Panel, hell it didn't go on fire! I have a problem with one of those rotary encoders not playing ball but that's part of the fun  :)

blueskydriver

Hi Dez,

Yes, it has been a good while since your first post and let me properly welcome you to Cockpitbuilders website.

Welcome to CockpitBuilders!!!

You've come to a great place for building your simulator....

Your Fire Control Panel looks great, is that OpenCockpits or self-made? Will you please post a pic of the panel from the front to show the engraving and such?

Again, welcome to the family 😁

Thanks for the welcome again John! Yes, the engraved top panels were from OpenCockpits. The fire handles (except for the red engraved lenses) were home made, as were the back plates and all the wiring looms. Switches and Korry style indicators from OC, as I recall!

blueskydriver

Looks great Dez, keep going and post lots of pics...they motivate all of us!

A bit of a side project for me...

Built an ADS-B receiver using a Raspberry Pi and a USB dongle from FlightAware.

This grants me a free Enterprise account on FlightAware.com. (Not even sure how that benefits me but's it's fun to do...)

Now the wife can complain about the antenna on the garage roof. :-)

Nice Ray!

I have had one for several years, its great to log in and see your own tracker being used as the FlightAware source!

Now we have our own place i will put up an outdoor antenna, its on the to-do list

Trev,

You just need one of these:
FlightAware Pro Stick Plus FA-PROSTICKPLUS-1 ADS-B USB Receiver with Built-in Filter
~$19

And:
Dual Band 978MHz 1090MHz 5dBi Magnetic Base SMA Male MCX Antenna for Aviation
~$10

And:
Raspberry Pi 3 Model B Board (Although I think any flavor will do)
~$39

It has pretty good range. I was surprised to see traffic all over the greater Pacific Northwest area.

You may be able to get the whole thing for free if you qualify (Meaning there's hardly anyone else in your area piping ADS-B data to Flightaware.)

Thanks Ray, I applied for the free equipment, fingers crossed!

In the meantime, how about you make a video on the subject?

Interesting you mention video as a training tool.

Personally, I don't learn via video if it's a highly-complex task. If it's the only method available, I end up pausing it every few seconds to digest the material.

In these situations, I usually just go off a written document.

Hey Ray,

Okay, a write up tutorial would be just as good...lol...anything too make it quicker for all of us to get up to speed with you 😁 You're way ahead of us!

Makes Perfect Sense to me.  I will look into it.  Thanks Ray  I may qualify, Nobody else in my area has one. :)
