Title: dual knobs
Post by: nihad on December 26, 2009, 12:50:16 PM
Another new dual set of knobs added to the collection will be made available coming days/weeks. Like the
real knobs only the bottom knob is back lightable.
The position of these knobs is on the Aft overhead panel of a B737NG.

These knobs are already available as mentioned before again only bottom knob is back lightable.

Any idea where I could find concentric encoders that aren't $30 each?

No, but that's cheaper than Honeywell at three times the price.

I would check out mouser.com on dual encoders but I think making your own dual encoders is the cheapest way.
The first dual set (with BRT inscription) has a selector encoder at the bottom and a potmeter on top.
Second set has a selector encoder at the bottom and a springloaded top knob.
Third set are both potmeters.
Finding these specialized encoders cheap might be imposible.

I have and have used the Alps EC11s.   They have a dual type with and without switch.   They work really well and have use them them with Hagstrom card and with Desktop Aviator card.   Some guys at Hangar45 have also use them with the PoKeys cards.    I am pretty sure they will also work with Leo's card as this is similiar to the DA card I have.
Here is the mouser part and also a link to the datasheet.   They are only about $7 each.   Looks like they may be out of stock at the moment so you want to call them.

The min order qty is 603 pcs, so I don't think I'll be ordering from them. :)

I'm building a set of control panels for a Garmin G1000 and I need dual concentric rotary encoders.  I'd rather not spend an arm and a leg each. :)

Links fixed....

Gene, I have ordered from them before.   I think that is a website error.  I have also ordered from Online Components....Here is the link and looks like they have them in stock.

Is that part number for the unit with the push button switch version?  the data sheet isn't very clear.

tnx.

I believe so.  I think the dual encoders only come with pushbutton integrated but I just dont use it if not necessary.   Your knobs actually woud have to allow for the travel anyway and you can keep it from actuating the pushputton by making sure your knobs are drilled out not to allow that travel.   They may have one without though.

just checked out the encoders and some are available with diff. shaft types as for the knobs I make as they are also copied from the inside and not drilled both knobs have "D" shaped shaft holes and tested the knobs on some dual greyhill encoders I have left from my own building time.

The push function can be used for some hidden non-avionic command like Pause...slew..Show/hide ATC text .. sound off  etc

The G1000 does use the push-buttons.  The prices from online components are insanely great too.  tnx!

are you building the G1000 Gene?  That will be nice to see.    The 172 I rent (real flying) has the G1000 with the GFC 700 Autopilot.  I love it.   Just went out on a night cross country tonight as a matter of fact.   Flew from KARR (Aurora, IL) to KJVL (Janesville, WI).   Shot an ILS with a circle to land at Janesville then came back and did a hold followed by a coupled GPS approach back into Aurora.   It was a beautiful night for it.  7 degrees F and smooth as glass.....

Anyway, I look forward to your G1000 if you build it.

That's the idea anyway.  It'll be a single screen version that runs in Reversionary mode all the time because I don't have the space for both the PFD and the MFD.

A friend of mine in the UK is working on a 100% G1000 emulator that will work with XPlane, MSFS and probably FlightGear.

Here's a pic of an early pre-OpenGL version:
(https://www.cockpitbuilders.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.simpits.org%2Fgeneb%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2009%2F12%2Flcd_panel2.jpg&hash=612d5f65824a93eb5f38f59c4c07dce91c33bfdb)

The instrument panel I've made has room for the button bar along the bottom as well as the control panels to either side.  I may end up combining the buttons from other panels to make what I need fit on the space I have available.

Added the final dual knobs of this kind just need to get the color right this set has a darker grey color not far off the one shown on the pictures.
Just toke the pictures (night shot) so the knobs look almost black will try to make better pictures tomorrow (daytime).

Nihad, they are beautiful.  Anyone who gets to have your knobs in their cockpit is one lucky guy.

Great stuff.

Looks very realistic so far Gene.   I have been waiting for Flight1tech to put out the G1000 Student edition.  Maybe your friend will beat them to it :-)  In any event, it will be a must have for the new GA pilot to have.

Nihad, your knobs look fantastic.....I look forward to having them in my pit.   I think they will really add to the realism.

Had to wait a long time but the machinery is in to do my own printing ,it was an investment and at the moment still am learning
how the printing works.
The reason I descided to get my own machinery is because the laser engraving of the panels was not what I wanted it to be and seeing these panels are not engraved to begin with I went this way.
Also having to wait for the company to engrave my panels whenever they felt like it did not work for me next to the cost.
I have to say this deff. looked easier then it really is but the first result looks promissing.

hope you all like it.

Thanx Trev and Dean and yeah having control of most of the process is very important and the pretty crisp part it is ok but it deff. needs to get even better but that has mostly to do with fine tweaking will get there for sure.

Wow, my first post...

To follow up on this if needed.  I ordered these from Onlinecomponents also.  just four of them.  No issues at all, dual concentric, with pushbutton.  I used them in my GNS 530. with a Desktop Aviators card.  they work great.
