Title: B777 thottle quad added to the line up!
Post by: Aerosim Solutions on April 05, 2010, 05:03:28 PM
Hi all, I've started building a B777TQ for 'Kennair' and I'll post the progress pics here...

The generic TQ base was the start of this TQ build and I've just completed the lever bodies.
Ken has opted for black levers and a grey B777 TQ, (we don't like the brown!!!)

Cheers guys,

Here is the flap lever mechanism completed. I can offer this piece as an individual item, it would suit any Boeing type quad! I haven't bent the end of the lever over yet, I'll wait until the housing is closer to being finished to determine the exact height. Anyhow.....back to the 'mill'!!!

You're so right Scott, this has got me salivating but its really putting the pressure on as I have to build the rest of the sim to a standard that will do it justice!!

All I can say is I'll do my best, and of course have fun in the process :)

I just had a play with these throttles this evening and they are sweeeeeeeet!!!  Can't wait to see them in their housing complete with flap and speedbrake etc.  Pictures can tell a thousand words but they can't convey the feeling of them in your hands.  It's too bad most of you won't get a chance to wrap your palms around this baby.  Quality to say the least.  I think it's going to take some doing to pry it from Gwyn's grip though :)

Umm would you believe Jack I didn't take my camera with me  :o   However it looks pretty much like the pic on Gwyn's website as he hasn't made the box for it yet.  It was more about getting my grubby little hands on it and copping a feel, if you know what I mean?  ;D  Here is what it looks like currently however.

Eager to see it "skinned" so to speak.
I played so many times with the TQ, (making whooosh noises) that I can understand the urge.
Glad you do the Triple7 in grey, will look awsome and for sure make Boeing rethink its choices ...

Agree Jack and Mike,

The 787 grey is what the 777 should have been so I'm looking forward to doing it.

As for the "whoosh" noises I think Gwyn will have something to say about that, he had to keep smacking my hands as I kept moving the levers beyond their intended travel as I risked damaging the switch wiring  :(  He's done a great job recreating the TOGA switches too.  Beautifully shaped and knurled with action to make any flight attendant melt.  He's got the material for the skin so that'll be done soon (sometime) depending on all these other orders that keep coming in.

Progressive pix to follow.

All the birds I flew, beside Cessnas, were either greyish or plain greenish or black, or a distressed mix of the latter..my brain links got used to associate those colors with fun and excitment. This is probably the explanation. lol

Gray is more neutral and business-like to me.

However, Boeing also like to use a baby-puke green on all of their Minuteman II/III missile system components. I never did get used to looking at that color and I was surrounded by it any time I was in a launch facility. Ugly green.

What would be the $$ damage in Canadian if I were to look at you doing a similar thing for 340 mor would i be better off getting the whole thing made like you did for Erhardt?By the way beautiful work as always Gwyn.

Hi Tim and cheers,
The A340TQ is AUD$4,300 (CAD$4044) as seen here - http://www.aerosimsolutions.com.au/a340tq.html It has working trim, CLB, FLX & TOGA switches, reversers, A/T disconnect buttons etc. The levers alone take at least 1/3 of a TQ build time (about 30 hours) so you probably wouldn't want me to make them for you!!! I thought you already had an A340TQ??? I can make the generic TQ base 4 engine with geared pots, that's only AUD$420.00 + postage and you can add your own levers to it. I just shipped a TQ base to Toronto and it cost AUD$38.00 Erhards TQ levers were the last things I made prior to the CNC arriving so I don't have CNC files for them unfortunately. Otherwise I would be willing to share them with you!

Gwyn

Hi all,
I'm back on Ken's throttle after making a few of the generic product range. I have mounted the generic throttle unit on a base plate and fitted the sides. The flapgate took a few hours to make as this one is machined on both sides from a single billet, I'm really pleased with the look of it. Last night I made the front and back covers but it got too dark for pictures - more soon.

Hi all,
This weekend I've painted and engraved the fuel panel in grey as per Ken's requirements! I've added the 'generic' spring loaded flap lever which works great. The potentiometer drive has also been added. On the other side of the quad the speed brake lever and pot drive is installed, this has a large spring applying side loading for friction which is the same on the flap lever. Next I will be making the trim levers and when these are in place I will be able to start on the top covers and light plates to finish it off.

Hi all,
I completed the trim levers and speedbrake this weekend. The trim handles were a nightmare to make but now I have patterns completed I am going to have a go at molding them later this week. I hope to announce the availablilty of the B777 TQ handles soon! Ken's TQ is mechanically complete and I just have to put the top covers and lightplates on. This one will be another one that will be hard to part with, at least I'll get to fly it, Ken lives about 10km away from me...

Those knobs look spectacular Gwyn, they're the oddest shape so good on you for machining them.  I like the return spring mechanism you've come up with too, most ingenious.  Can't wait to wrap my tendrils around them.  I think I'm going to have to enlist the support of some of Perth's sim builders (Wes, Greg, Darryl?) to get this baby off you.  Maybe we could have an official handing over ceremony and record it for this website? lol.  ;D

Hi all,

I've now completed all of the mechanical work and it just needs the top covers fitted, lightplates painted and engraved. It also needs the micro switches fitting to the trim levers. The speed brake lever drives a pot and it has a detent at the 'armed' position. My next molding mission will be doing the trim knobs, these were a bit tricky to make, I wonder why Boeing chose such a weird shape! My mate who is a B777 training Captain told me both levers have to move at the same time to make trim adjustments but they are only used if the trim switches on the yokes fail. He said my throttle movement and friction setting is "Perfect" so I have approval from the real deal! I can almost taste the Wild Turkey Ken!!!

Hi Jack,
No problem to make an extra pair at the same time. I have the locking toggle switches fitted already so I have the size to bore the knobs. Do you have the diameter of your locking toggles and I'll make you a pair? I will be doing them this weekend as the TQ should be completed by Sunday night. The real thing has lights in these knobs but I'm not going there Ken, I'll give you a little torch to find them in the dark lol

Ok - B777 fuel switches and knobs will be added to the available product lists soon!!!

I'm really looking forward to tomorrow (Friday) as I'm back on the B777 TQ for Ken and it will be painted at the end of the day. I hope to post pics of the completed unit on Sunday night.

On an unfortunate note for Aerosim, the T7 TQ build was interrupted when I had to make a second set of generic TQ parts for a custumer in Germany. I posted $500.00 worth of parts to Germany that didn't arrive and they have been lost in the postal system. I did not hesitate to offer a full refund or replace them despite being accused of not sending them at all. I have now sent them registered and requiring proof of delivery. I lost $580 on this transaction and this customer is clearly annoyed with me for reasons that escape me, I don't recall ever working for a postal service! For this reason from now on all parts will be despatched by registered courier at the purchaser's expense unfortunately. Peter Cos did warn me about using regular post and I have been bitten, my own fault, sorry Pete you were right!
It is a shock to have a complaint, something I never considered would happen at Aerosim Solutions and I'm surprised that someone would complain to the only supplier in the world of a particular component, go figure! I do try to keep my charges to a minimum but I won't cut costs by using regular post again. I still hope the first set of parts I made will eventually show up somewhere, the TQ based is engraved with "Aerosim Solutions" so I hope some postal worker may have the decency to contact me via my website.

As always Aerosim Solutions will be a loyal supplier of top quality components, information and openly shared design ideas to my friends and other users of our cockpit building forums. My prime focus is still helping builders and promoting this hobby, profit is a secondary consideration. I think the reputation, quality and integrity of Aerosim Solutions is clearly spelled out in many of these pages for all to see!

Cheers,
Gwyn Perrett

The Boeing 777 thottle quadrant has been completed at last. This is the first TQ I have made where every piece has been manufactured on the CNC machine It is built from aluminium, PVC and acrylics with quality components throughout so I now fficially announce it as an available Aerosim product. The unit contains the Aerosim generic throttle base with gear driven potentiometers and adjustable friction. The flap and speedbrake also have gear driven potentiometers. The flap lever has to be lifted with a realistic spring loaded detent mechanism. The alternate trim levers are spring loaded to the centre and quad switches ensure it operates as per the real TQ. The fuel valve switches are the locking toggle type and all electrics are pre wired for any interface card. This unit is not motorised but the generic throttle base has provision for a stepper motor drives. A very happy 'Kennair' will be collecting the TQ this week with a big smile on his face I expect!!!

Wow!

Looks awesome Gwyn.  Ken has got to be one very happy camper.  Fantastic backlighting also.

I have a feeling you are going to become very busy making these for the triple 7 crowd.

You're so right Scott.  I got a look at this baby a couple of weeks back as the top plate was being fitted and it looks and feels awesome.  Using the generic throttle body the internal design is deceptively simple and clean, and now that all the design has been nutted out, future units can be turned out in a fraction of the time.  Gwyn's also making a 777 MIP for me so I hope to pick that up soon and then the new install can begin in earnest.  Check out AerosimSolutions (http://www.aerosimsolutions.com.au) for details and pricing for anyone else interested.

Ken.

Very nice piece of equipment Gwyn!
I know  first hand that designing a TQ is no small feat!
Well done.

That's Ken on the left, do you think his smile is genuine or is he just humouring me?? Another TQ leaves the workshop and it's onto more Spitfire bits for Darryl! I got an enquiry from Mathew Shiel yesterday for some 747TQ parts, a legend of our game no less!

Title: Re: B777 thottle quad PIREP!!!

Last night Ken invited me over to have a fly in his sim fitted with my B777TQ and I jumped at the chance. I have made a few TQs and delivered them to my customers but I have never had the chance to actually operate one of them! Ken had installed it in his console and wired it direct to a Leo Bodnar interface card, all pots and switches were connected except for the C & R stabilizer rocket switches which FS does not simulate. Ken had utilized one of these switches as a parking brake which I thought was a neat trick. After a few minutes Ken had kicked the tyres and lit the fires and we lined up for a take off from Amsterdam Schippol. The throttle levers are quite heavy and take some effort to move them, my mate who is a B777 training captain help me with setting up the friction when the unit was still in my workshop. The T7 engines started to spool up and whine and the beasty started to roll. I pushed the levers forward and was immediately impressed with the linearity of the pots, it was sweet. My old tq in my sim that I made 5 years ago is no where near as good as this, my N1 is 100% when my levers reach about two thirds of the available travel and it is not linear either. I can't believe I have been content with it for 5 years, I have to build myself a new TQ and I will! The glass displays from the new Sim Avionics are absolutely stunning, I think the jump seat passenger could easily read the digits on the displays. It really puts my old PMDG set up to shame, I will bite the bullet and buy Sim Avionics for sure. We recently had the opportunity to compare Sim Avionics and Project Magenta side by side and in my opinion SA is a clear winner and a lot cheaper too. CAD$1700.00 for SA can hardly be considered a cheap piece of software but for the brain of your simulator with ongoing support and upgrades, I think it is a valid price for the effort that has gone into it's creation.
Back to the throttle... As I levelled off and pulled back on the bang sticks the engines responded instantly and smoothly and it certainly felt like I was flying a big aeroplane, what a buzz! What a buzz. I had a play with the alternate trim levers which worked instantly and the speedbrake operated well, my PMDG speedbrake makes the noise but doesn't really slow the plane down much. The flapgate is great, I spent a lot of time machining this and it is certainly heavy duty, Captain John says it is exacly the same feel as the real quad and "you have got it all right"!!! Ken and I flew for about two and a half hours and I was thrilled to 'fly my throttle', A new B737TQ is going straight onto my design bench!
Thanks Ken, MIP panels coming soon!!
Cheers Gwyn

A pleasure as always Gwyn, I was more than pleased to offer the chance to test out your own handiwork.  It's a sweet feel and gives very smooth control of a heavy bird like the T7 as you discovered.  I just need to get it into a 777 pedestal instead of a PC12!  As for the jump seat passenger, he certainly could read the panel digits if he could in fact read and would stop licking our elbows (i.e. Labrador).  It's now I realise I should have taken some photos to mark the occasion.  Damn!  Oh well, you'll just have to come again and test out the new MIP as well.

Gwyn, why would you put that oldie TQ in the 73 ?
Do it the way Boeing should have for the "New generation" , ...and the way I did it  :P

You have the parts!!!

I'll second that Jack, an improvement even the manufacturer recognised in the 787.

Watch out Ken....
You build a grey 777 and I use a 787 TQ in a 73!!

We are on the brink of being exiled to a dusty and dark planet for forced labour in a titanium mine.
