Hello everybody,

I have been lurking in the shadows here for quite some time but I finally created an account :)

I would like to add the Garmin GTN 650 & 750 avionics to the cockpit I am building. I would like to 3D print the bezels for the units and have a touch panel behind them and so I managed to find some 3D files on GrabCAD for the bezels but I have limited 3D AutoCAD abilities to modify them. The files have the units fully modeled with the switches, knobs, SD card slots etc which I would like to remove and end up with just the bezels with no holes or cut-outs.

I would like to know if anybody here is willing to do this for me and export the bezels in STL format that I can 3D print and I will gladly compensate for your time. Here are the links to the files:

GTN 650: https://grabcad.com/library/garmin-gtn-650
GTN 750: https://grabcad.com/library/garmin-750-aircraft-navigation-1

I would really appreciate this!!

Can you export in .obj? What are the file types you can export?

Hi Trevor, thank you so much for your response.

I can export to .OBJ file but the individual who created the models included an .STL file as well.

register yourself an account with TINKERCAD.COM

You can import the OBJ File or the STL

Create Boxes as Holes and Join them to the parts you want to make disappear.

Its super easy and when your done you can export the new STL File.

Trevor,

I did try Tinkercad however, I get the following message when trying to import the STL file:

QuoteThis shape's mesh is too complex.
Tinkercad meshes are limited to 300,000 triangles.
Try simplifying the mesh before re-importing it.

I am sort of stuck at the moment.

That sucks.  I dont know fusion that well either to import it there.  Sorry bud. Just a thought.

Hi,

I'll see what I can do in Inventor over the weekend. What do you need in place of the knobs, a hole or flat surface? I assume a cut out in place of the screen?

Hi Paul,

Thank you so much for your offer to help!! I very much appreciate your time!
No holes needed, just flat surfaces and cutout for screen and back panel removed if possible.

Thanks once again!

Hi,

Here's a first attempt, I haven't tried to slice the STL's but did repair them in Netfabb as the GTN750 STL had multiple shells so they should be ok.

Let me know if there are any problems or if you need any other changes.
