Today... I received freight!  Thank you, Boy Bruin at Simzation!

Nope, not the NG ones.  They are all digital unlike the classic ones.  No ARINC429 either, they use a proprietary multiplexed serial interface to the REU under the floor, so no easy interfacing unfortunately

blueskydriver

Holy Cow Kev!

You took a big leap frog jump there! From gauges to the entire back wall, that is AWESOME!

So, who is this Simzation? Info please?

I am very happy for you...😁

As my ceiling for the PIT is nearly finished I decided to make a couple of Grimes lights. I've seen various options but decided on the one with a red cover on the back and a push switch. So although I borrowed the overall idea from various websites, the drawings and design are all my own.

I started with a 3D printed body but didn't think it was strong enough, so I machined it out of aluminium tube 50mm Dia x 5mm x 70mm long. The illumination is a 5 watt COB LED panel, which is extremely bright, so I added a 3mm opal diffusing cover at the front. The back cover is held in place by a 3 mm grub screw, so it's easy to remove if I ned to change the LED.

Now I just need to paint the body and wire them up.
The picture shows the type of light I copied.

OMG JOE! That looks great!

You better start producing more of these ASAP! Other builders will for sure want to buy them.

Looks like this is the year cockpit building goes super high tech and those hard to get items will no longer be an issue. Joe will eventually make them all....

John, Simzation is in Holland, and they sell OEM parts when they have them.  On most things they are not cheap, but quality and service is exceptional.  For example, under my pholosophy of "if I touch it every flight or it is parked in front of my face constantly, it shall either work and feel like OEM, or be OEM", I just purchased OEM MASTER CAUTION, FIRE WARN, and sixpacks for both sides from them.  Believe it or not, they cost more than that entire rear bulkhead.  The bulkead was unbelievably inexpensive, and is 100% complete down to the O2 masks, fire gloves, gear pins, and FDAS system on the cockpit door.  Even flashlights and jumpseats.

Point of contact is Boy Bruin - a very nice gentleman.  I can't say enough good things about these guys.

BTW, that bulkhead shipped via ocean last June and arrived in Sep or Oct, and has been sitting in a buddy's warehouse for months.  Extremely well packed.

Thank you John,

The main point about these parts are as you say, they are generally not available; or they can command a price for something that needs a lot of work to make it look presentable.
In fact as I started making these a UK seller was selling one for £65.00, which I'm sure is not bad for an OEM product, but it would have needed stripping, painting and converting to 12 volt. So not that interesting to me.
I know many guys on the forum only consider OEM but I'm not that fussy, if it looks and more importantly works, that will do for me.

If I do get any enquires I'll work out a reasonable price.

Best
Joe.

Yes, it should work, Bernard.  Keypad goes directly to the FDAS module, and there's a connection to the cockpit door control on the pedestal from the FDAS module.

Hey Everyone,

Getting closer to "Back in Service", here is my latest pic...gotta mount the projectors and align the screen correction app.

God I wish I could go with overhead projectors and a huge screen like that.  Gorgeous!

Here is a brief update on my sim.  Making progress.  Panel has been fitted to basic frame and rudder pedals are now underneath, where they belong.  I did not like the electric trim/AP disconnect I built so I designed, printed and wired a different one.  Still not 100% satisfied but it is an improvement.  All the subpanels now fit but my jig saw died so am on hiatus for a few days till the new one arrives and I can finish cutting out the panel for the bottom row of switches and guages.

PS- bit and bought P3Dv5.  Would not launch with Windows 8.1 (at least on my machine) so I went back to Win 10.  It uses DX12 and requires the latest media creation tool.  Having some issues calibrating my throttles but otherwise am getting things to work.

Trevor Hale

@n4208t - Update FSUIPC only 9.99 for previous owners, and makes calibration way better.  Careful with V5 though lots of "INVISIBLE WALLS AND RANDOM CRASHES"

Waiting for a hot fix this week.

Thanks Trev.  Had already done that.  Finally got the throttles calibrated but I had to invert one of them to do so and I have never had to do that before so need to figure out why.  Now working on the rest.

Inverted connection on the pot itself is usually the culprit.

@kattx, thanks.  Glad you liked the garage (and, you know, the collimators too, lol)

@bernard, hmm, not telling.  Haha.

Almost finish a real Narco DME unit for my home cockpit.

This one was really a nightmare, but I wanted to use the dme with this genuine displays.

I have one of these...

What do you need to share your code? My first born? A house? :-)

Yes. A house is ok. I need more space for the cockpit :P

The problem is not only the code. I had to:
-make some additional electronics outside the box. Real system has a computer box that send data. It is not posible to use only arduino, becasue you need to manage more current in some cases.
-Do some mods inside, because it needed a 7v power supply and it generated a lot of heat with quite high current. I have made some minor changes to operate it with 5v,  and replace some components to make it easier interface with arduino. The logic part of the circuit needs very constant and clean 5v, and the lights (digits and bulbs) were regulated inside the dme, with an old and very hot system. I am powering the logic part with 5v. And the lights through a pwm system. But I have to read the dimmer pot with arduino and send the pwm power out of the box.

Perhaps, with time, I could public the hardware and code I have made for it.
The good thing about the narco 195 is that is easy to find the mantenience manual with hundred of pages explaining everything about the unit. Diagrams.. componentes, everything.
Heres it is:
http://www.mikeg.net/hobbies/aviation/avionics/combined/Narco%20DME-195%20Combined.pdf
In the page 243-244 you have all the diagram of the dme. It is great documented.

I needed 19 wires to interface all the functions.
I have spent more than 100 hours understanding the diagram, building the electroncis and coding...
But I am not good at electronics. If I can do it, almost everyone can!

Arturo.

i found a screw that i dont know what it goes too
