Title: Alaska Airlines N512AS 737-800
Post by: Flyboyandre on April 22, 2012, 07:38:25 AM
Well, just shortly after finishing my first simpit I found myself with itchy fingers and wondered what to do next. Little did my wife know when she said "wouldnt it be cool if people looked at the nose of a plane when opening the garage door? As you all know from my previous project, i like it when people challenge me so off we go.
I was very surprised when I got no reaction to the building plans as I showed it to her. Off we went to Home Depot and here we go.
Of course she wasnt quite as quiet when she walked in on the footprint construction, hinting that I could live in there. Daughter is excited as she now can sit in the first officer's seat.
The build will be modular so transport will be very doable. Maybe I will take the 30 minute road trip to the 737 plant in Renton when all done?
Alright, need some help.......what livery should we paint it in?

My old simpit will get a proper burial. Actually kind of sad to shut it down after all of the work i put i
Put into it. Here is a picture taken as late as last week.

Andre, I applaud you.  its a big undertaking to change midstream like that with your design.  I am sure it is going to look fantastic.

Good luck and I bet your wife bites her tongue next time LOL.

Show us some more progress when you get there.

Painfully slow progress through day 2 since it takes time to get these arches right.

This hobby is all about the "quest".  I think I have spent about 98% of my time building and 2% flying over the past decade. It seems that once you are there you are soon looking for the next hill to climb. I have just pretty well completed my full scale dual seat 737 cockpit, and although I am back to flying and enjoying it all I'm getting a little itchy about the fact there is little more to do.  Sort of like post-partem blues I guess.

Not sure about that,
Building is adictive, I agree, but FLYING is the essence of it
On my previous Sim , I went for a circumnavigation, ..and it still is on my mind,
Arriving at dawn on the Azores after a Transatlantic , real time, and then....Europe, Middle East, China , Japan...and back.. this is what a sim is all about.
New sim not yet flyable, but this is the ultimate goal

Fred are you married? Get your wife into an F16 like mine. So, you get the best of three worlds; you get to fly your B737, you'll get to help her build the F16 and that is going to solve your need to build, and all the while, you'll have her very happy because you'll actually be spending more time with her and not be all to yourself anymore...

Hey Andre, your projecting is looking awesome. However, I admire your daughter even more. Girls are so cute at that age; my 21 year old daughter was just as cute as yours at that age. It was the funniest times when she was 7-11, much like your daughter appears to be. Do whatever you can to keep her a part of the simulator building.

My daughter is now married and with her two year old daughter (my grand-daughter), who is growing up fast, will soon be at that age before I know it. So, I miss the times with my daughter, but I'll have the grand-daughter to share the sim with all over again. Although, the sim was quite crude when my daughter flew it...she'd say "Dad this is so cool being made from poster board, car seats and scrap plywood!"

In other words, enjoy every moment with your kids while doing your sim, because you'll want them to someday tell their kids about all the adventures with "Dear Old Dad".

Keep up the great work and posting the photos.

Know what U mean J.
Just a while ago I was teaching Xwind landings to my daughter in a C-150 and today she's FO in a 777.
Time flies faster than our Sims!!

Now THAT is cool! Somehow I just don't know if I want my daughter behind the yoke with me onboard. I shot these 2 pics of her in my rookie sim last week. She walked into the sim, said "daddy please get the plane up in the air so I can fly to Australia". Well I did and she contently took over the yoke. She did pretty well for manual flight, except it looked more like an oval racetrack. Although she spent 30 minutes flying, it was all a big right turn :)
Yeah, I know the sim isn't as nice as some of yours but I'm proud to say that most of the stuff is Made from scratch.

Andre, don't say stuff like that.  Your project is incredible and you have done a fantastic Job building it.  Watching your kids share the love for flight in one way or another is an incredible thing.  You must be a Proud dad when you see things like that.

Great stuff, and thanks for sharing.

Ditto...
Most "rookie" Sims we built were not even that sophisticated!!!
Take time for your new build and ask questions as we all gain experience through each build and are more than happy to share it.

(Recent example, and this is my 3rd sim !, do not twist wires, bundle them! Well I twisted them, no big deal but next sim I wont!!)
Cheers

It's great to see the family all join in and have fun. You must be a proud husband and father. I have a little girl too, but all she would do if I let her near anything is tear it to pieces and smash whatever she can to make some sort of noise. (1 1/2yrs) But that day will come for me too !

Good luck with the nose of the cockpit. I hate timber and arc's.

Cool story too Jack!

I just noticed the "KIA of Puyallup" on your license plate bracket.

If you're local to Puyallup, I suspect I can make your life a LOT easier during your build. :)

There's nothing worse in this world than a ShopBot, sitting idle just twiddling it's little stepper motors away. :)  I'm in Graham.  Throw me a PM. :D

After getting a chance to see the end goal, I would have recommended using a 2x4 or 2x6 frame.  Doing that could have really cut down on the weight and material cost.

Great job regardless!

BTW, tell your wife it's ok with ME if you get a custom license plate. *laughs*

Andre,
It looks awsome.
I want to ask you: where do you get the mesurements to make the cockpit? I am aware of the FDS old cockpit but I have not seen the mesurements anywere.
Thanks

it was cool to meet up Gene and i look forward to future "geek" moments.
The reason for the 2x8's is to give enough clearance for yoke/rudder mechanism. Using 2x4's or 2x6's would make me a bit nervous with regards to working space.

Jetpilot, i used a mix of things to get the dimensions laid out. I agree there isn't much out there any more so I had to use dimensions I found online to aide me during the arch measurements and cutting

I was very determined to getting the rough build of the shell finished today but had to call it a night in order to avoid pissing off my neighbors :)
The shell is starting to take shape but wholly molly this project is a bit bigger than i anticipated :)

I pulled the entire window frame of the flight deck apart and rebuilt it since i wasn't pleased with the angles from the drawings i was working with.
After researching 737-800 pictures for 4 hours last night i finally had what I needed to make it right. The only thing that got my anger running tonight was that i ended up one 2x2 short of finishing the first officer side windows. Oh well, i smell a weekend ahead.

You might save inches at the top for projectors , does not have to be that high (inside). Unless you want the proper "outside" look.  ;)

Thanks for the kind words Jack :)
I want it all, including look and space for projectors so it will happen. The old sim pit will be taken apart at some point in the process and i will be changing up my workshop space to "custom fit" the garage for the whole darn package. Wifey is already shaking her head and counting the dollar bills :)
Any good recommendations on projectors? What are some of the things you guys have learned to keep an eye on with regards to the choice of projectors?

Thank you Scott. It's encouraging and motivating when professionals like you guys endorse the build. Yeah, the FDS item was one of my aides in the initial measuring and cutting. I didnt go buy new tools for this so the skill saw has gotten plenty of use so far. I think once the roof module is done things will cruise along a bit easier.
Hope to get the spars for that portion cut and mocked up today.

Don't forget to frame in a space for the overheads before you throw a bunch of spars up there.   That is what I did for mine.  Made it much easier.

Very unhappy with my "progress" this weekend. I guess some family time is valuable at times.
My big plans of getting the upper module framed went?????  ::)

Oh well, I got some stuff done. Took Jack's advice of reinforcing the main structure of the upper module to better handle the overhead weight. That was a quick install and I also got the back wall plates cut to fit. In theory, I should be making good progress during the evenings this coming week but I'm incredibly sore.

This is carpentery at its best my friend.
Try to send the forces to the back wall, as the final back arch is the main factor for rigidity.

I hurt like a SOB. Only 3 more formers to go. Seriously, there have been moments where I thought to myself "wouldn't it be cool with the first ever convertible 737?". I just can't seem to picture that in my mind.
The build has some imperfections here and there but i'm pleased overall. Nothing that wont Be covered during the skinning process.
Amidst all the good news, i lost a dear friend tonight. My ever so faithful skillsaw said f u and decided to leave this world. Well, i make new friends very easily so it gives me an excuse to visit the tool department at Home Depot after my grieving process is over :)

Lol, you're making a good point there.
Unfortunately Gene knows the proximity between the houses in my community so it's near impossible to avoid the swiveling heads. Today i was approached by the fed ex guy (who delivered my new guitar), the Scott's guy wanting to sell me lawn services (my lawn is just fine thank you very much!), the pizza hut guy who delivered my dinner and believe it or not - a voice appeared out of the dark around 9pm, scaring the crap out of me. "Excuse me.........I see it looks like a plane. Is it going to be a bunk bed or something?" How the heck do you answer such a question?  :-\

With houses something like 8 feet apart, there's no secrets to be had in that place. :)

Andre, what's the spacing on the stringers, center to center?

Gene, it varies slightly as i placed them strategically above connection points of the window frame. Pretty close to about 25cm apart though. I may add one or two extra stringers but i dont want them too close as it may bring on flatspots when i "stretch" the skin.

Roof for the most part done. Just a few support blocks to install and some minor trimming left.
Then it's off to the outside skin. Any volunteer soldiers? I have liquid refreshments!

Wow, looking at the pic's in your last post, that is really some nice work. I don't mind electronics, and other stuff, but working with wood, well let's say it isn't my thing. I don't have the patients for it. Work tops, tables etc no problem. But angled woodwork etc, it just never works out for me.

Your doing a great job, I am looking forward to see the final design.

Ok, I'm out of hardboard and will take a break until Friday night. I'm very happy with how it goes on and by the time layer #2 is on I recon it will be pretty darn nice.
Cutting 3" strips for the nose as it contains the largest curves.
Lots of people stopping and I find it insulting that they don't seem to care about my lawn.

Ok, we are up and running again. Got the hardboard hauled home yesterday thanks to my friend Gene so now I hope to have the skin on the lower part installed by end of day tomorrow. The progress has slowed down a bit due to work related travel as well as spending some quality time with family.
Maybe I will let the first officer sheet his side of the flght deck? :)

Hi Andre,

Since your now skinning your sim, just wanted to give you this advice. When Simlady and I did our first cockpit (wood) we cut into the lower front and sides for vent holes, and then wired 5 inch PC fans on the inside of the holes to suck air inwards. Later, we had holes at the top for the air to be blown out. Why? Because wood retains heat much better then metal and all the heat from the electronics needed somewhere to go; unless, you like flying in your birthday suit?

The biggest problem with any sim is heat and is the one thing that most builders overlook in planning. Many folks here will say sim cooling was one of the last things on their mind, I know it was for us. Of course, power supply and outlets is a close second. So, take it from Simlady and I, sit down for a 1 hour break from building today to just think about heating/cooling, air circulation, power requirements, and fire retardents (fire extingushers); doing this now will save hours and hours later...

BSD

PS. Portable Air Conditioners will be your new best friend for sure, if not now, they will later...

Base layer of skin applied. Now i will let the wood settle and glue dry before applying the finish layer. Now I'm going to grab a cold one and rest for a bit.
I still have to plug along with the window frames.
Feels like i didn't make the progress I had hoped for as traffic and curiosity slowed me down. Wish I could keep the garage door closed to keep out of the sightlines but space is premium until I get the old simpit torn down.

Can't help but thinking "fibre glass and epoxy" on that one - instead of two layers of wood. Or maybe fiber glass and epoxy (NOT polyester resin!!!) at the end? Would strengthen the heck out of it and you won't get any cracks in the paint.

I've been thinking about doing that - make the rib structure, fill in the spars with foam and cover with glass fiber and epoxy resin. The foam could then be removed (any leftovers is easily dissolved with acetone) and the ribs would be glued in place.

Hmmmm............ Just what I needed. Another "great" idea.... :)

You're kidding, right? From this end, it looks like you are moving at the speed of light. Ever since I started my sim and frequented many forums, I have never seen someone complete such a good looking wood shell from scratch in such a short time, except maybe Ivar's but no idea how long it took him.

Anyway, really superb workmanship!  You should truly be proud of your project & your progress.

Vidar, gjør det ikke slik at jeg ender opp i hundehuset :) Kjærringa blir nok ikke glad dersom jeg begynner med glassfiber på toppen av alt annet :)

Maurice, I appreciate the kind words. The pace of the project relates to the fact that I consider myself similar to the energizer bunny. I just never stop and there have been evenings where I've wanted to flip the whole darn thing off as frustrating moments arise.
However, the end result is very rewarding and although all the questions and gawking can be annoying I also find it interesting to talk to bypassers.
Ivar is indeed a true craftsman and probably a pioneer within the community when it comes to scratch builders. Another thing he has that I don't is patience. His shell is absolutely fantastic but he took his time with it and the end result was breathtaking.
For me, this has come together in about a month and I dont think I can ever be compared to Ivar :)

Steve, thank you for the kind words. It's cool to hear that little guys like me is noticed :)

That is an amazing job Andre.   I love my wooden shell from FDS and yours looks perfect!   I completely redid the window frames and overhead on mine when I built it and it was a lot of work just to do that so what you have completed in such short time to me is just simply amazing and so far your skinning looks great also.  I opted not to skin the outside of mine because it is never seen but I think it does look really cool looking at yours and I could se how neighbors and passers by would be very curious indeed.

Great work and I look forward to seeing it finished.

Scott

PS - Steve c. - I agree with Warren, you should dust off your wood shell design and do another production run.  The steel shell you make is really awesome of course but the curves and lines of the wood one are hard to beat.  Maybe a limited time production run of the Nostalgic FDS Wooden beast!  love mine and the Pro mip fit in it perfectly.

"Excuse me, this may sound like a stupid question but are you building an Igloo?". I looked at her and said nothing but thought to myself "what the f$&@ is wrong with people?". An Igloo????? Really?????? Do you really want to go there??????? I contained myself and shook my head as she moved on, muttering to myself that she would be one of those people who didn't deserve a closer look or an answer. The progress may not be that noticeable but I did finish the skinning of the entire captain's side, including finish sanding and nails punched down. Actually, I was so excited that I had to pull out the filler and get a rough coat onto the rear portion of the captain's side. Tomorrow I will ensure that the first officer gets the same treatment. The roof will have to wait until this weekend.

Alright, we made it to 5 weeks. I feel like a cripple every night going to bed after working 2 full time jobs (one of them pays me and the other one takes money away).

Where does the build sit right now?

Sheeting done, surface sanded and nails punched on the entire lower part of the flight deck.
8 cartridges of glue used.
About 5200 finish nails have gone into the shell.
About 800 screws on the framework.
4 sheets of plywood.
6 sheets of hardboard.
3 #2 drill bits shattered.
One orbital sander went to heaven.
One jigsaw landed in the street because it couldn't cut straight (true!).
One of the hand drills only works when it wants to now. May end up in a street near you soon!
3 Jigsaw blades.
One pair of tennis shoes are now leaking as a nail decided to poke through my sole.
One gallon of drywall compound so far.
And the list goes on............

Today's question from a random bypasser..... Is it flyable now? Serious? When will these stupid questions end? I've considered putting up a big dry erase board and list the top 10 stupid questions for everyone to see. Yes? No?

Anyway, as you can see on the first picture I really have to consider demolition work on the old simpit sooner rather than later. It kills me to tear it down but I'm afraid I have no option :)

Wanna see pictures? Here we gooooooooooooo..

Hi Andre,

Your sim is looking great! Too much work for me though... Got a suggestion about your onlookers who are curious. Go to Walmart and buy a "First Up" or whatever the name brand pop-up Canopy that is 10'x10' and also buy the sides kit. You'll have a way to work out in front of your garage, if you just use three sides, and then the open side would face you. You could get a folding table to setup tools or what not on it, and place it inside; thereby you'll have extra working space without too many people asking questions. Although, remember the old saying "He who does must answer to he who doesn't"...lol.

Looks awesome! What an awesome amount of work into that baby!

I had a question anout the drywall compound.. I have done alot of of sheetrocking in the homes i have owned so i have alot of experience with it... I would be afraid of it cracking with any type of flexing in that wood. Say you lift it up to move it and get some flex in it?  Its nice and easy to work with compared to say fiberglassing the thing for sure.. I guess if it stays put you should be just fine..

You bring up a good point Mike, one that I had as well as I started. However, I put my faith in Ivar Hestnes' hands who actually used the exact same construction method/materials. He said he has yet to get cracks after 6 years.
The modular build should not make it too risky when moving/disassembling as it's truly a plug together. Neither do I imagine I will be moving it too often.
Title: Re: Help! I found a Boeing 737 in my garage!
Post by: blueskydriver on June 01, 2012, 10:59:54 PM
I agree with Mike about drywall compound and how the flexing causes cracks way to easy. If not by moving it, then it'll be from expansion and contraction. That was (or is) the biggest problem with curved screens. Albeit, they would not move like your cockpit might need moving, but the movement from the weather changes is bigger than what most people think.

There is so much heat involved with a sim, and then you need to cool it (the room), so the battle of hot and cold rages and your drywall compund will be the victim. Actually, I was surprised about this route you took with the compound, did you think about the fiberglass? Would you believe that either fiberglass or cloth sheeting with epoxy or dope on RC planes looks really nice? I have about 50 airplanes and many are done in those methods. More so, I think cloth and dope is a lot better looking with a lot less sanding, as well as it paints really nice; thereby, that could be something to think about.

If the drywall does fail, you could still consider fiberglass or cloth materials, but I have never seen that used over drywall though. I am not sure how it'd turn out... Also, where do you live, do the temps change or vary alot, and is your garage heated or cooled by heat/AC? If not, it will be. Plan on including that right along with enough power outlets. I know some people will say you don't need to many outlets, but in my opinion, more outlets with 20 amp each, is better than less. Take it from a person who has melted cords and power strips because I was assuming what I had was enough. You'll never know if the wires in the wall are getting too hot until they melt (circuit breakers don't prevent fires, they prevent shorts...which is after the fire starts!).

Anyway, I look forward to more of your pictures and progress. Heck, I even like what the onlookers say too you and you tell all of us here. If anything, look at it as all fun and games, and that people envy you or soon will...

BSD

Everything you've said has been living on my brain since the planning started. I originally wasnt going to use the compound until I talked to Ivar so I decided to give it a shot. I guess there would be no better place in the world with regards to temperature fluxuations than up there in Norway.
Heat and power was something I learned a lot about when I built my first project so I'm prepared with ideas when I get my garage set up the way I want to. The old sim pit will be torn down and I will re-purpose the dedicated circuit breakers I installed when building the first sim.
Time will tell. It will be a while before it 's all done as the project will slow down significantly when we get to the instrumentation part. Not because I can't do it quickly but because budget will be spread out over time.
Ordered my MIP today.

Should work out okay. Ivar has moved his shell around more than a bunch of gypsies in the 18th century, and it still looks great.

I would use epoxy + fiber glass though. MUCH easier to get an extremely smooth surface, and the whole structure will be incredible strong. However, as you've already used drywall compound, that option is pretty much gone. You can of course cover everything with glass fiber and epoxy, but it won't do you too much good now. Money wasted, actually. The drywall compound will crack, and the epoxy/fiber glass laminate won't stick to the framing.

And after all - the idea is to sit INSIDE the sim! So what if it cracks on the outside? Look at the FDS shell. It looks like a Darth Vader reject, but as with people - it is the inside that counts!

Alright, pulled the roof section off in order to apply the second layer of hardboard. Hope to get this done tomorrow. Shouldn't be too big of a deal. The next step after that is to get multiple layers of filler on and sand it ready for paint.
As for the bottom I still have some finish work with window framing to do and prep for window installation. Both captain and first officer side have one coat of filler applied and it will soon be time to start the dreaded job of sanding.
Worked on the rounded corners of the aft side windows today. Ended up too rounded in the upper corner but it will have to do.

I have to give My wife credit for this one as she took on the challenge of silencing curious bypassers. She scavengered the gift shop at The Museum Of Flight today and came up with a sign that is now posted anove my garage door. Just wait and see.....Some jerk will steal it :)

Anyhow.......I have started the second layer sheeting on the top (center aft section on the second picture) and what I have done so far turned out really good. Very minimal sanding will go into prepping for the filler. If all goes well we are within a couple of weeks of paint.

Ok, so I did listen to my doctor for once. With recent health issues and the need to drop some weight, I carefully approached the 737 for some light duty this afternoon/evening.
The only remaining portion on the exterior was to finish the second layer of sheeting on the roof and prep sand before filler. This has now been accomplished.
The first layer of filler on the lower portion has been sanded and is ready for coat number two.
My hope is to have the body ready for paint by the end of the weekend. I have some minor trim work that needs to be completed, one of them being the channels for the window installation.

Oh and I mocked up the nose with some styrofoam sheeting containing a short and sweet descriptiom. Funny thing is........No questions today!!

Awesome Andre.  You did so much in such a short time.  I think if CB had an award for fastest full shell build you would win hands down.   Can't wait to see that thing with paint on it!

A big milestone in the project has been reached. My indefinite counter app on my iPad shows 50 days, 11 hours and 38 minutes since the first cut was made with the jigsaw.
I guess I really haven't taken much time to reflect on the build so far as I went all in during every spare moment I had since the April 21st start. However, it hit me today....This is a BIG project!!! I don't think I have embarked on any single project this big during my 38 years of life. Actually, the N512AS project would probably outnumber everything I've done in the past.....combined!
That being said I felt very a great sense of accomplishment when I closed the garage door this evening.
I would like to thank everyone who have stepped up with advice, given me a hand, listened to my bitching and most important of all....to my wife for allowing me to build my dream...

I am sorry about the number of posts but somehow I feel compelled to share almost real time. The progress is about to slow down anyway for a while as i await the arrival of the MIP.

I'm hiring some professional paint help this weekend just to make sure I have someone to supervise me. However, it came at a high price as my 9 year old wanted a new purse for payment
Well, i don't think she will spot the difference between fake or real. Right?

I received a private message on one of the forums I have my build posted at 2 days ago.
To my big surprise I was told by two of my norwegian compadres that they were going to show up at my house to see the build. Sure enough, last night they rolled into Puyallup in their rented RV and I had to take them on a special tour of the area, including the final stop with them certifying my shell for paint :)

What a cool experience! Had a really cool time Vidar and Ketil!

Future of flight tour in Everett.

My wife's comments went something like this "it looks like you're preparing for something illegal". Well, it isn't that bad as I'm finally ready to spray the primer, followed by the glossy white base coat.
I'm also trying to duplicate the 2 shades of blue in order to get the Spirit of Seattle color scheme as realistic as possible.

Typically you won't see the paintjob applied until a fully functional plane rolls off the line. However, this is no typical factory job so I reserve the right to make any decisions I please cause it's MY stinking (literally) garage.
Well, the paint isn't 100% complete as my buddy Steve is cutting a stencil for the "Proudly All Boeing 737" which will go on the lower portion below the windows and I also need to get the 512 posted above the front windows.
The final touch on the body itself is to get the skin installed to the lower frame. This may seem like a tiny thing but will add a lot more to the color. Decided to keep it off until the old simpit is gone in order to avoid accidental scuffing. Space is definitely at a premium now........

Guys, let me start out by saying thank you.
I am a user of many forums but have been drawn more and more to this one as it serves as a fantastic channel between rookies like me and the experts out there. Some people may have a flat learning curve while some learn fast. Regardless there is great support for all experience levels.

I have been on both sides as a moderator on radio controlled car forums and I've seen much of the garbage that gets thrown out there and it creates a very venomous environment.
I can't say that I have ever seen much of bickering going on within the cockpitbuilders forum and it energizes me to see new and experienced simmers work together towards a common goal: expanding the population base and experience level within the flight simulator world.

I hesitate to use names as I tend to forget some, which isn't fair or intentional. I can only say that other forums would be better off having individuals like Jack, Scott, Mike, Trevor, etc.
I also want to say a special thank you to Gene Buckle who stepped in right away when he noticed how close he lived to me. He has helped me haul wood, Helped brainstorm, etc.

It looks like the project is catching attention everywhere. Today I learned that the Alaska Airlines chief pilot in Seattle may shoot me an e-mail to get me up close to the real thing. This will hopefully give me an opportunity to take pics of every little detail as we pursue realism to the fullest.

My 9 year old got me a detail spray gun for father's day and I'm happy with the final paint result although the top fade was left somewhat narrow. I did this on purpose as the fade is 20 feet above the ground on the real thing while mine would be right in your face. However, I think that the contrast is there due t the sharp paint lines separating dark blue from the aqua top. Kudos to the lady at The zhome Depot for being patient with me during color customization :)
Oh yeah, Frog Tape rules!!!!!!!!!

In all sincerity, you guys are class act.

Of course as in any other posts, I have to ask for advice/support.....
Anyone have a closeup of a 737 pitot tube? By chance maybe even dimensions?

That would be so awesome Mike. Yeah, the stripes are cool. I am imitating the "Spirit of Seattle" color scheme as seen on this picture, hence also modelling this exact tail number N512AS.
Maybe a stupid question. What are those raised knobs on top of the nose?

You mean in front of the front windows, just aft of the radar dome (the actual nose)? Vortex generators. They reduce the wind noise in the cockpit by 3 dB:

I would get some VG pics but i dont think we have em installed on our airplanes. At least i dont remember seeing any.  I dont think the company cares too much about our hearing in the airplane :)

Lol. I think I have a good idea of the looks.

She's a wrap! Well, almost a wrap. Got the "skirt" for the base frame cut, installed and painted today. Only windows, the metal window trim and a few realistic N512AS specific graphics pieces remains to be completed on the exterior shell.
There will also be a few unique exterior pieces, including pitot tubes and other goodies :)

She's got her birthmarks. Thanks to Steve for making the stencils, allowing me to apply the real life markings on the side and above the nose windows.
Now while I await some real Boeing parts I will be lifting the frame onto its wheels in order to manouver it around.

Just as I got the 8th wheel in place on the 737 it was time to start the demolition work on the old simpit.
It feels a bit surreal to tear down something that took so long bringing to life.
R.I.P Simpit, you helped me capture memories from all across the world!

This picture was one of my lead in pictures to this entire build. I felt it was fitting to post it once again as it captures the last experience in the old pit. This was the last time It was powered up.

Looks awesome!

This week the mortal remains of v1 will hit the local landfill. *sigh*

I notice in that picture above that there doesn't appear to be any HUD in the overhead over the capt seat.  Is that typical for the 800?

Looks like lots of neat things to vacuform though.  Might have to build an oven this summer. :D

Happy 4th everyone!
Today I was a man on a mission as I moved from the emotional stage to the beat the crap out of it with a hammer stage.
What I envisioned to be a day filled with exercise, ended up with a bunch of war wounds.
The bi$&@ fought me all the way and really took advantage of a slight stepladder mishap and nailed me with a 4" screw all the way to the bone. The damn board was still stuck on me as I stood up. This just ended up pissing me off to and I went to town like a madman.
Luckily my hammer blows blended wonderfully with the neighborhood fireworks show.
I would have flattened thenwholendarn thing if I could only reach the one wall that is still standing but it will have to wait until we get a couple of loads to the landfill tomorrow.
Now that I look at the end game pictures, it looks like I missed a Tornado warning. Luckily the gods decided to spare the 737 :)

It's weird to imagine that 2 years worth of work was flattened in about 8 hours.
However, she fought me all the way.
So instead of rest in peace I would now like to say "burn in hell!".

I can still see Gene's head shaking while he mutters "Vapor barrier, really?

Received an email from Krzysztof at Simworld today stating that they were done machining my MIP and that it left Poland today.
This is in many ways the key component for the interior build as it houses all the digital displays.

Additionally I tracked down a pair of 737 seats from Nick at APHS in Florida today so they should also be on their way across the country shortly.

My SSD drives arrived today as well and I built a temporary shelf unit that I hauled into an upstairs bedroom in order to start the main software installation.

Time to enjoy a cold drink while kicking back nearby the air conditioner. Cheers!

As I await panel parts and other components for the build, I decided to start working on the avionics software.
After installing the 3 new SSD drives this morning I got the OS up and running and started building the software layers for the sim.
This looks to become a 6 or 7 PC powerplant by the time I'm done, which is right in line with what I envisioned when I started.
Love the Prosim 737 software!

Not sure about SA as I haven't tried that.

Try demos!
Some use Open GL, some do not.
Some work well on 2 or 3 computers only
Take your time , this is the heart of the sim, price should not be the decision factor.
My 2¢ only.

Jack,

My point exactly, as I had PM (big bucks) for several years and was not happy. I spent too much time configuring!

Now with Prosim I spend all my time flying and it was cheaper.

Prosim is not the only new kid on the block.

Absolutely true. I simply would never slam any of the systems available. I never ended up testing SA but see that a lot of people really like it. Regardless I ended up with Prosim as it seemed so incredibly easy to work with. Actually purchased it and ran it for a bit in my old simulator.

Yes, I realize Prosim is not the only new kid, but it suits my budget and works 100 times better than PM.

The biggest thing I like is it has it's own flight model, so no messing around trying to get it to fly right.

I have to admit, in hauling that old cockpit off to the dump I can say I've seen homes built to a lesser standard. :)  Not only did he use a vapor barrier in the floor, but he used the right OSB floor decking material. :)  (and insulation!  EVERYWHERE. :D )

Alrighty! The first x-mas present has arrived from Santa in Poland. These guys make quality stuff and it's the first time I have seen anyone rival what my dad could do with tape, bubble wrap and a box. I'm sure that customs just took one look at it and said "we ain't dealing with that one" and on it went.
Still can't figure out how that many goodies can fit in a small box.

Thank you Krzysztof and Filip!

Oh, the packages... :) Some years ago, I ran a hardware review website. One of the local "dealers" here in Norway sent us a lot of stuff. One time I had to email them and ask if they wanted their tape back since I got a shipment where the cardboard box easily could've been omitted! They also used to put a few pieces of candy "to snack on while reading the assembly instructions". In that email, I asked if they could stop sending me lemon candy since I'm not a big fan of those.

Next shipment? Oh, boy! I think there was at least 1 cm (.4 inches) of tape on that thing! Inside? A kilo of LEMON CANDY! And _one_ strawberry flavored.... :D

Andre, that looks awesome! How are you going to backlight it?

My Chronolite app says that I've been on my mission for 82 days and 13 hours so I guess it's time for a snack break.
Most of you guys probably know me as a "one trick pony" but I tend to keep myself active with many different things. One of my other passions is smoking meats.
This is no news for my friends on the different smoking forums but I realized that I haven't shared this stuff with my friends on the simulator side.

I enjoy throwing new things in my scratch made smokehouse. Today I made beef jerky (last picture), which is an all time favorite in the family.
And most important of all.......I love to share :)

Exactly Sam ... my diet consists exactly what Andre produces, and beer.

Now, if my doctor starts telling me that I can't eat smoked meats like Andre produces, then I will just have to fire the doctor  :)

1.  The brisket is to die for.  Veeerry good stuff!

2.  The Pastrami is essentially joy as a sandwich filling.  It didn't last long, especially after my wife bought me some good Rye bread to go with it. :D

You picked up a real bargain there. I'd been watching those and set my alarm to place a bid at 1.30am UK time but unfortunately the beer and wine won out!
