The people in these stories, including many of the journalists, are completely clueless to how things actually work in the cockpit. This idea of electronics replacing paper is nothing new, as all of us probably know, because the paperless cockpit and Electronic Flight Bags have been in use for years now. The only big thing about this story is that now it's moving to iPads. I know that many airlines that use EFB's still have paper backups, so I would be a bit curious to see if airlines that adopt the iPads will retain paper backups.
