Title: coil vs stepper?
Post by: jackpilot on January 26, 2012, 10:47:48 AM
I have these two gauges, both 2 pointers concentric.
The top one has regular coils and with a small voltage and a capacitor I can have a smooth deflection on each pointer.

Here comes the bottom one.
has what seems to me 2 stepper motors
A 3v "pulsed by hand" applied to one wire makes the pointer move a little bit each time .

Need a Stepper for dummies approach as I cant figure the wiring nor the way to make it work, or better interface it.

Jack,

i never messed with steppers other than my little clock project and that was easy.  You will either need to use SIOC and an OC stepper card, FS2Phidget and a phidget stepper board, or an Arduino board and Link2FS   All will work with the last one probably the easiest.  The wiring is easy to figure out using a multimeter.  Google Stepper motors.
