Found two 737 map lights on EBay and got them today
Working nice (need a 12V bulb swap) the light is regulated with a shutter mechanism, a bit like a photo lens, all working smoothly but....you wonder if the guys who used them ever washed their hands...I had to use Scotchbrite and tons of dish soap + tooth brush to get rid of the ugly cruddy sticky stuff you see on pic 2!!
Anyway the first one is disassembled and sent to the paint bench !! :D
More pics to come when finished.
Jack
Welcome to the world of real airplane parts ... it is amazing how much dirt accumulates in/on them
Have fun cleaning
Axel
Same type I have Jack. They work great!
Scott

Scott: what type of bulb?
Thanks Jack for posting, I just purchased 2 of these. There are only 4 left.
John
Me too, I hope, as long as he can send to Oz.
Thanx for the link, Jack.

One thing I should mention is that they get really hot with a 12 volt bulb. They are all metal and not vented so the heat transfers through the metal and can obviously burn. I am going to order some 12v led replacement bulbs for mine but haven't yet. I know Autozone sells them and have also seen some places online that specialize in replacement LEDs such as this one below.

Thanks Scott, I have some of these bulbs now, but you just reminded me...
John
I suspected that...meanwhile I never let them on for long.
Could be vented through the top though.
One down one to go.
Forgive my ignorance, :idiot: what about this light and Grimes light? Are they from the different periods? Or are there two types of map lights installed in the cockpit?
Nick
Nick,
These are the lights in the 737 that go in the eyebrow window locations, where as the Grimes lights are mounted on the sidewalls. The Map Lights are used to light the charts or maps held in your hands, but more so items attached to Yoke Clip Board. The Grimes Lights are used for looking at maps and other paperwork, but they're usually more like a general light in a sense.
Of course, this is from where I have seen them mounted in real aircraft, both the 737 and 727 tend to follow this lighting method; although, the 727 has a white and red dome light on both sides of the ceiling, the Grimes are on the sidewalls and the FE stations.

Looks good Jack!
...by the way, I have converted mines to use warm led three day ago as they really get very hot using those 24v or 12v bulbs. Great results and next I will find a dimmer to use with it...
Carlos,
I think you'll find the FDS 12v-dimmer is an excellent product. I bought 4 of these for my map and overhead map lights. They are excellent.
Frank Cooper
Not sure it is the same model
On mines the bulb is centered inbetween two reflectors . The light goes through a diaphragm (no need for dimmer) and is concentrated through a small lens (see top pics)
Projected light is very sharp, shaped as a rectangle which can be made smaller with the diaphragm.
No direct lighting.
??
Hi Jack,
See my map light model below and I think they work the same way . I could increase or decrease the light diameter but a dimmer will help to reduce the intensity of it while flying at night ;)

Thanks John, I was under impression that all the lights are of the same type.
Hi, Carlos.
They sure do. I used two of them on my MIP for the Glare and MCP led lighting, worked a treat.
I've also fitted them to my map light panels, but haven't hooked them up yet. The nice thing is they run directly off the 12volt rail and they are also fused. Gotta love the lengths these guys go to at FDS.
Frank Cooper
Hey All,
The smaller black Grimes sidewall lights are for you flight kit that sits right there in that sidewall cutout. At night you cant see in your bag..

Tried them on for 15mn ....they get hot
1) usally they are intended for map or plate reading, nor ambiant light. On for 2 to 3 min at most.
2) a ΒΌ inch hole at the top makes a lot of difference.
Happy camper.
I know this thread started a while back, but I only received my two lights yesterday.
I hate to say it, Jack, but mine are in pristine nick, they could quite easily be put back in service.
I only have to change the bulbs in mine, so I'm gonna try the lcd's like Carlos and hook them up to the map light FDS dimmers that I've put in my sidewalls.
Thanx for all of the info, guys,
Frank Cooper
Ref # for the LEDs lights please.??
I'm gonna just print out this image and take it to Bunnings or Masters light section and see if I can match it up.
You gotta love the DIY stores...
