I just thought i'd share a pic or 2..
There is always a lot of talk about the correct RAL 7011 color used on the 737.
When i was getting the bezel of my RMI ready to paint I was sanding off the old finish and came across no less than 5 different layers of paint, all a different shade !.
This is just an example of how even the real thing can vary wildly in color, even though RAL codes supposed to be "industry Standard" colors.

The point is not to lose sleep over a slightly different shade of color :)
Theres always color variation when you sand off the paint.
Not necessarily due different color layers.
Heres an example of what i got a time ago when i made some blank templates for my sim.
I painted with only one color layer and after that i sand the panel, with different grit grades and it came up with a lot of color variations, quite realistic though.

I dont know if you could notice in this picture but it has the same effect, and only with one tone, they get very realistic with this process.

I dont know if its the case, but sure you can get different color variations with sanding.
