Title: Price-Gouging....
Post by: RayS on March 23, 2015, 03:42:26 PM
Well... one of the critical components of my home-based simulator (I may use words like "Recreational", "Toy", "Not FAA-Approved") has raised their prices.

One of my avionics computers failed, so.. no problem! I'll just email the company for a new license key. Normally this would be free. I've had to do this twice before without issue and they were very friendly and prompt with a new key.

Yesterday I discover that a new key will cost me $800. (Existing customer pricing)

A brand new avionics package NOW costs $2500.

I thought I was pulling a fast one by buying components off eBay at a fraction of the cost new.

Sad really.. I love the Avidyne platform but... I'm going to have a very hard time getting a PO# from my CFO for this purchase.................

Anyone know C++ ?

I just saw that too.  I spent a lot of money on their stuff and to hear they will not even give you a replacement key for the software you already purchase....

I think there is potential for legal action.   We should at least expect that our existing purchase will continue to work across computer upgrades and such at least as long as the operating systems support it.   I can see them stopping future retail sales and requiring existing users to pay for support when its needed but in your case that sounds like robbery.

Now I guess all my software from them just became worthless as well.

Thats crap.

Heck I'd even be happy paying an annual subscription model for the use of the software. (But NOT at $$$$$$$ a year, mind you....)

Project Magenta has been stellar in this arena. I purchased some of their products decades ago and they would still support me free of charge. (If I was still using their products of course...)

While I don't want to go down that dark, corrosive path called legal recourse, the thought of such a price escalation really burns my nads.

Does anyone know what country they are based out of?

I believe the UK.  I have spoke to Carl a few times in the past.  Terrible way to treat the customers who got him on the map to begin with really...

Hi Ray and Scott,

Would a program like Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder work?

Here: https://www.magicaljellybean.com/product-key-finder-win7-office2010/ (https://www.magicaljellybean.com/product-key-finder-win7-office2010/)

There is a free version... It can find over 6500+ program keys (ignore the title in the link above and read the info on the webpage about it).

Best Regards,

John

Ok... If you read my response to this post I have to apologize to FlyThisSim and Symavio as I just contacted them and they will give me a unlock code for my software. Have you guys contacted them?

I just got an email from Carl and he'll supply a new code. He also mentioned that existing SIMAVIO can get on board for $800 if X-Plane updates their code and breaks FTS, but the offer will be going away.

Spoke with Bob Reed... we may resurrect some old Avidyne code. I'll talk with DonL to get his thoughts.

Toying with the idea of making parts for... and building my own GA sim. just a nice little play toy for a overgrown boy.

recently ive been looking around to see whats available, wont mind a G1000 setup or something along the lines off..

then i realize, you can buy real avionics for basically the same price some people charge. so may go for something like this

or even a nice dynon with synthetic view..
