Title: Warm white leds to boeing backlight color
Post by: kurt-olsson on November 01, 2015, 01:06:45 AM
Hi, i bought a ledstrip that has color warm white. But this is still to white compared to the boeing 737 color.

I see that people color them with color pen, i think of doing the same.

But what color should i use? Anyone done this before?

Peter,
You can use a light filter made of Amber colored acetate. It is known as "lighting gel" in stage and studio lighting.
See this link for examples:

Also look at Flying_Fox's blog for his use of it with some really good pictures.
I did mine the same way but I don't have any pictures to show.

Hope this helps

Also, you might need to use one or two layers of that acetate film, depending on how "warm" your LEDs really are.

Warm white LED strip I bought on eBay for my MIP required only one layer to match real  MIP backlighting color. And when I bought more LED strips from the same seller 3 month later - they were closer to cool white rather then to warm white and required two layers of film. I also tried to buy another set of LED strips and they differed even more, despite all of them were marked as "warm white".

Another solution may be to try amber LED strips. However, their actual color also may differ from real one.
Also, the amber LED strips  always appear dimmer than white ones. So, warm white even with two filter  film layers maybe still brighter than amber without filter. But it all depends on actual LED strips type and quality you get from different producers.

Nick is right, the Amber led's are a bit on the dim side but acceptable. I used these on my panel and it is not bad. Just be sure to get the 5050 not the 3528. The difference is a larger surface area of the chip and therefore a little better spread of light. Seems the 5050 is also just a bit brighter than the 3528.
Here are the ones I got:

I found amber leds are way too amber and not authentic. i am busy making my own IBL panels and with some experimenting, I found that a normal orange highlighter pen works quite well :)
