Title: Cockpit video
Post by: jackpilot on December 04, 2016, 10:07:47 AM
Hi Guys

After seing all these nice cockpit videos, I'd like to make some but having no experience of the necessary hardware I would like your comments.
I know that tablets/smartphones can do it, with mixed results sometimes.

So having none of the above (still using an old faithfull flip phone) I can invest in whatever camera system able to deliver a nice HD vid.
I noticed that the ambiant sounds (other than software generated) ie voices , switches clicks etc often sound awkward . Also it would be nice to input pilot voice responding to ATC ( Rob did a good job at that in his movies)

Anyway, all comments will be appreciated.
Jack

Jack,
I have a new iPhone 7, and whilst I own any number of flash video equipment, (gopro's, canon dslr, etc., etc.), I find myself more and more, reaching for the trusty iPhone, when I'm sitting in the cockpit doing flights or test flights.

I invested heavily into GoPro 360 (7 grand's worth) and that is what I will be using on a permanent basis, but for now, the iPhone is handy...

Ohh, yeah, it's a 12 megapixel camera on the iPhone, takes magnificent photo's and video is hard to beat......

Sound fairly good and image is OK.
(Just as a note, I got dizzy half way through as you go left and right up and down non stop   :D)
Thank you for the tip.

Hi Jack,

If your wanting to secure something in the cockpit, I'd suggest you look at the action cameras such as a GO-PRO or Garmin Virb. They have wide angle lenses and HD resolution that can capture a lot of detail and come with good mounting systems.

I personally use the Garmin Virb Elite for my RW flying, and occasional sim use. It's great for RW, as it's a set and forget type of operation. I just confirm that it's setup, charged and memory card is empty at home, then once in the plane just mount it and slide the switch to on to start recording.
You need a headset adaptor cable to record the audio intercom.

You can get the standard, discontinued model from amazon for $200:
https://www.amazon.ca/Garmin-Action-Camera-Discontinued-Manufacturer/dp/B00EOHUVV8/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1480948746&sr=8-5&keywords=garmin+virb (https://www.amazon.ca/Garmin-Action-Camera-Discontinued-Manufacturer/dp/B00EOHUVV8/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1480948746&sr=8-5&keywords=garmin+virb)

The Elite model adds gps & accelerometer information as well, useful for real flying, not so much for sim use.

Looks like the current version is about $315 from Amazon:

I'll be posting some videos soon that I shot with mine at WorldFlight.

Hi Jack,

Funny thing - but common camera may also provide a good result.

My sim videos (1080HD) currently are made with Nikon Coolpix AW120 which I initially bought for travelling as underwater camera. It has wide enough angle without a fisheye effect.

When recording I also make sound adjustments - turn down overall volume, turn off subwoofer and switch the central channel sounds to the speaker that is in front of simulator.

Example:

And this one demonstrates takeoff sounds:

Speaking of cameras...

This is the test flight that I recorded with the newly obtained Activeon CX Gold camera (1080p 60 fps)  It is cheaper analog to GoPro - picked it up for 150 CDN on sale at BestBuy.

P3D, JustSim Innsbruck scenery, Immersive Display Pro.  Takeoff on Rwy 08, circle and landing on Rwy 26.
Camera FOW used =120 degrees (one can use different FOW there).

Camera is very light sensitive, to the extent that another test dusk flight at FlyTampa Corfu scenery looked on video like almost daytime flight.
