Title: Motivation up and down lesson
Post by: kurt-olsson on March 05, 2017, 08:30:12 AM
Aviation has always been a major interest for me so the root interest of this hobby never fails. In 2015 i then realized i could maybe build a home cockpit after being introduced to teensy/arduino.

The simulator was on my mind 24/7 and i was building, learning and soldering.
After my second sons birth the time for the sim was just crushed to pieces! I never touched anything for like 5months and was beginning to think my 6k investment of oem was invain and thinking of a sale.

Today i was planning to finish one of my custom panels by drilling one simple hole. I drilled it, and in the same moment i accidently hit my oldest sons lego-stuff (like 2m tall buildings) with my elbow on the kitchentable and all hell broke loose! Hehe
Had to put the drillmachine and my stuff away after 2 minutes, but man. It felt good to be back! Cant imagine how i would feel now if i would have gotten rid of my stuff due to no time.

Lesson:This is a lifetime hobby, dont sell your stuff due to insufficient time.

Peter,

You are 100% Right.  SOmetimes I even take a "Vacation" from the Hobby, in fact every summer I go to my Camp and play on the Boat.  Save the Sim for the winters and when I have time.  Every time I come back to it it takes me nearly a month to remember where I was and what I was working on and How it all works.

Never sell your stuff unless you have too.  #1. you will never get your money out of it.  #2. you will regret it.

I regret every day selling my 737 Stuff.  and if I could have it back I would.  I miss that aircraft more then you know, and although I have one awesome King air.... I miss the 737.

One Day, I will get some 737 stuff back, and I will have 2 Sims LOL That day will likely be after I win the lottery, but hey its nice to dream LOL.

I just really miss that aircraft.

Maybe we can switch eachothers sim a year or so Trevor!
I think a smaller real cockpit like your will be the ultimate in immersive authentic flight feeling! :)

Imagine doing a crossing of the atlantic sea at night with only VOR and a box of beer! Hehe

LOL  Sounds awesome..  (Box of beer behind the seats... Been there-done that) LOL.  I have photos of the remnants to prove it ha ha ha.

We have the FSHost server setup, and Bob and I often fly together, he needs to bring the speed back on his 737 a bit, but I can keep up with him.  Be great to do some crossings together one day with as many people as we could get on the server.

(Could do it on vatsim also, but then chatting with each other can be a challenge).

My immersion level is good, but still nowhere near motion...

Hope to be able to join some network flights in maybe a year. Would love to do a cross the pond event!

But if i get something small flyable let me know if you fly within a small gruop maybe i can join you.

I watched robs streaming flights, looks superfun!

Same story here... I've parted out/sold sim hardware that later I've regretted.

I made a hard and fast rule to not sell any more sim hardware because eventually I'll find a way to repurpose it. So far that has worked out well.

Crazy as it sounds, I keep doing everything else except flight simulator related projects. Tonight, I am applying epoxy thinned with alcohol to the firewall of a RC airplane for a fellow RC club member. Long story, he crashed it while I was helping on the buddy-box and I felt obligated too fix it; new fuselage and some other parts later, I am finally getting around to doing this for him.

Anyway, got the shed project ongoing and that can be slow at times, plus I decided to start a new hobby and that is "Stop Motion Animation". Oh yeah, a whole bunch of stuff needed and ordered, then finally got started for only one day. Why? The sun came out the very next day and temps were 60's, so my motivation for RC planes kicked in, me thinking it will be a really early Spring (like starting late March). Thus, I put all the animation stuff away and bam! The weather goes back too freezing cold and we get 8 inches of snow the next day!

Talk about optimism killer, so I was going to switch back too animation, but I stuck with preparing RC planes. Sure enough, it snows 3 more times and we're supposed to get 6 inches this weekend. UUUUGGGHH! Of course I am thinking I need to get going on the simulator all along.

However, there are days when I am saying to myself one hobby has to go. The problem is which one, RC planes or Simulators. I know it sucks too be me right? Seriously, I understand a lot of you guys have bigger things keeping you from your simulator at times...family, jobs and so on. Yet, if you really knew me in person, making a decision like this would be as big as any problem you might have concerning your whole motivation for still going.

I will end by saying this, if were not for this website I wouldn't know what too do. Not about making decisions, but just giving up altogether...so, my motivation comes from reading your post, seeing your pics and watching your YouTube videos.

Best Regards,

John

Why quitting one hobby when you can have two !
....Just a small winter blues attack John!

Have a Kit-Kat, dark chocolate is good for treating that..

Guys, I may have the answer.

I own and have been in the MX-5 Club here in Oz. I got the latest real hot baby, the RF and am really entrenched in the Committee side of things.

So, simming and cars are a large part of my DNA now.

They are both very frustrating hobbies, but when I'm fed up to the eye teeth with one, I just shut one down and pay more attention to the other.

At the moment, the sim is winning. I'm flying the pants off my sim and don't have any time for the club....ohh the trials and tribulations, huh?
