Title: Computer load
Post by: jackpilot on March 22, 2010, 09:03:11 AM
Hi Guys
I am trying to figure out the electrical amps needed for the sim.
I have no idea what the average computer+screen  load is ?
My set up calls for 5 PCs with screen + 3 projectors, two PC power units and some misc items like ducted fans, lighting, etc.
Voltage 110-115.
Some info on the subject could be useful for Household Electrically Challenged dummies like me.

Electrical equipment is often rated in watts, which irritates me to no end, I don't know why they can't put it in amps. I don't see any breakers in my box listed as 1000W or 800W or 1600W. Idiots.

Anyway, add up all of the wattage (or amps if they were bright enough to list it that way) and divide that by your wall voltage. That will give you the current draw in AMPS.

I = P / U

I=amps
P=watt
U=Current

Exaple:
I= 1000W/115V
I= 8,69 Ampere

Jack, go to a electrician and borrow a "fork". Then you can measure the exact draw.
I have one of those that can measure AC and DC amperes. Clever tool.

We call those "forks", "amp clamps" up  here.

Fire it all up, if you dare, and clamp the ring around your cord after the load, near the wall socket, or better yet, if you dare, at the circut breaker box, BE CAREFUL!!!!! When working in the box, hgh voltages are present. (obviously)
