Title: Shuttle landing strip..
Post by: jackpilot on June 24, 2010, 12:12:11 PM
What a strip....15Kfeet, twice as wide as a reg one.
I never thought about it before!!!  ::)

Just try it , take off from Orlando, from ORL head out 070° maintain some 3000 feet, at 170 knots, then over MALET turn right 170° and open your eyes.
Fly over the runway, slightly left check the two liftoff pads one with a booster-shuttle ready to go, and from there make a left hand circuit back to the strip....easy to make the best greaser you ever did with 15000 feet of pavement ahead!
This is FS9, must be even better with FSX (hopefully).
  :)

I did that for real on my commercial cross-country flight down to Key West.

The contoller wouldn't let me perform a T&G, but they did allow me a low slow pass down the runway at 500'.  I'm pretty sure I could have landed the 172 across the runway it's so wide.

Lucky bastard!!!!

Was fun though with the 73, low and slow..
I am amazed that they even allowed you to approach the zone!!
So much paranoia now. We still can fly in major airports with a Cessna, but for how long?

Well, Mike, let's grab a guitar, play the blues, have a shot of Bourbon and plan the next flight!!!

Have a good one

This was back in '90 or '91 before paranoia had set in on everyone.

They still wouldn't let me touch down though as it was a government facility with no prior permission. I should have wrote ahead.

I have never seen this strip, I may just have to check it out.  Thanks for the heads up!

like mike, i was able to do a low flyby when doing my twin rating out of Daytona Beach.
seem to remember i had to talk to Patrick AFB before being handed to the controller to request
the flyby.
i've got a picture somewhere of the runway out of the windshield. so big, plenty of time to take a
shot.   if i can scrounge the use of a scanner, i'll post it  ;D

I came down from the north having just gassed at KJAX and was in contact with Jacksonville Center for flight following. I was told to contact Shuttle Control to ask for the flyby.
