I need to ask you and also Mike, how are you getting these units so CLEAN inside?  Every type of cleaner that I use just does nothing.  well, it'll semi loosen chunky dirt, but grime etc and residue seems to be a part of the paint!  I have a -500 TQ, BTW.

I see these pictures and have a thousand questions.

I need to figure out that motor type and controller... and how to control it. 

The motor I used is a Pololu 37D 10:1 gear motor https://www.pololu.com/product/4758

The controller is arduino Uno with a Pololu Motor driver shield - https://www.pololu.com/product/2503

With regard to the cleaning, i strip mine down to nothing and have them chemically washed.
Older Zinc Oxide tends to discolor around grease etc, so sometimes they cant look 100%  clean no matter what you do. 
My NG one is bright green as it was only 6 years old when it was taken out of service.
