Is the PM FMC updating its position  by auto-tuning nearby Navaids (assuming the Nav radios are in auto-tune configuration) like it is supposed to do, or does it keep track of its position artificially through FS ?
In which case the usual requirement for auto-tune is of no importance?

Jack..  As far as I know, while flying a Route, the Radios auto tune to stations along the route.  If you watch the ND while on a route, The stations will change along the way.
