Is real screen paint necessary

I know this is an endlessly debated question on many forums but I am hoping to get an answer from someone who has tried something like Behr's Silver paint (not really silver) and then switched to a much more expensive specially formulated screen paint such as screen Goo (ridiculously expensive) or PaintonScreen: http://www.paintonscreen.com/index.html

So far, I've only tried Behr's silver paint and this looks OK to me as far as brightness is concerned but I think contrast could be improved with a real screen paint. But I would need to spend more than 500 dollars for a screen that big and I could certainly use that money elsewhere in my sim  :)

Has anybody tried both approaches?

Thanks,
Maurice

YOU said it...

PS: When I see your latest pics I figure I would be bending over backwards to have the same set-up!!
Glad Dr Pete healed your bleeding heart!   ::)

More seriously, the best maybe to paint a square foot sample of your screen material (Gypsum I think)
Hang it in the middle of your screen and see if it makes any valuable difference with the Behr Paint.
Just my 2 Yens!

Didn't know they used Yens in Quebec  :).

My screen is already painted with the Behr paint so I know what looks like. I'm more interested in results with more expensive screen paints.

By the way, I just tried projecting some high resolution nature pictures and I must say, they look absolutely beautiful on the Behr paint. In fact, they look a heck of a lot nicer than FSX views. So I think I may just stick to that for now anyway  :)

Hi Maurice,

The prices above seems to be VERY expensive. There is a high quality Finnish paint company called Tikkurila that also supplies paints at least inside Europe. They have a special video projector line of paints with a different gray colors. They are promising that with this paint black is real black in the screen etc. so it makes the colors come out better. We are using this paint in our visual screen.
If I can remember correctly, the price was very competitive:

Here is a link: (sorry, in Finnish only but maybe you can read it through with Google translate)
http://www.tikkurila.fi/kotimaalarit/ideat/maalausideat/valkokangas_edullisesti/

Maybe with the help of this page you can find similar color with the color codes.
