Resistor should be on the neg or on the positive  feed ? or non important?

Does not matter. I keep them on the positive side, since the negative side most often is common with other outputs in the setups we use. Keep each circuit separated. Since the LED is a diode, you achieve that by placing the resistor on the positive side.
