This is what I have now with an ordinary 1024X768 run of the mill projector.

Resolution(HD) is not my priority and 180° is for later, but I would mainly like a much larger and wider image with an ultra short ratio unit.
Any hints /recommendations.

Jack,

You may want to explore HD sooner, in that you can move the projector back from the screen to give you a larger image without loosing resolution if you are running HD.

I can make a good recommendation for an ultra short throw if you want one. I have a three channel system running on ultra short throws and it looks great (200 degree horizontal).

I see you mentioned ultra-short throw. I assume you have limited space in your sim room?

Best choice now is OPTOMA GT1080 - full HD, 0.50 throw.

Nope I have ample room and height. So ultra short could be an overkill, and I do not want to overspend either as I'll have to go to a 3 Proj setup later.

Bjorn
Will check the specs thanks

Any other advice?

No, The Optoma is a perfect projector for FS.
I have had mine for 6 months now.
100" picture in full HD at 1.10 meters from the screen.

Hi Guys,

I've been looking at the Optoma GT1080 and the BenQ1080st.. going back and forth between the two for over a year now.

Going to start out with a one projector  view with hopes of a projector purchase this xmas. Already got a huge screen that was destined for the trash..  7' by 12'.

Bjorn, you have me leaning towards the Optima once more. Nice to read these comments.

Putting my trust in everyone here, and a healthy does of FlyElise Immersive Designer Pro to test the design - I just ordered three Optoma GT1080s for my home sim.  Paid $653 each from Projector People. Will send pics once I get them installed.
I have a 7 ft radius, 200 degree stretched fabric screen on frame built by Northern FlightSim.

You will not be disappointed with the Optoma GT1080 HD projectors   They are a great value for the price point.   The only issue you may have is that setting may vary from projector to projector, so you may have to adjust things like saturation, contrast, brightness, etc.   Be sure to set them up for high-altitude so the fan cools more efficiently.  Also, I don't recommend using the enhanced Black setting, as it tends to cause flicker.

My three Optoma GT1080s have been running fine for many months in a 220 degree configuration with a 12' diameter screen.  By the way...   My screens are made from two (2) sheets of Matte Formica sheets 5' x 12' bonded together in the middle - makes for a strong, smooth, seamless screen that is supported by a 6' radius frame.  It was simply painted with Kiltz white primer paint rolled on.
